Chapter 9 - THE HIDEOUT

We walked for miles. Through rain and mud and darkness. Caleb didn’t complain. He held my hand and walked beside me, shivering but quiet, trusting me with his whole small heart. That faith kept me going. That faith would save us both.

By dawn, we reached a small, abandoned hunting cabin deep in the woods—property that had belonged to my grandfather, long forgotten, off every map Vanessa might have. I broke the padlock, lit a small fire in the hearth, and wrapped Caleb in every blanket I could find.

While he slept, I laid everything out on a rough wooden table. The fake birth certificate. My father’s letter. The affidavit. Ethan’s missed calls. Vanessa’s confession—that wasn’t hers.

Every piece fit.

Vanessa had married me knowing she was carrying my child. She had used Caleb as a bargaining chip. A weapon. A prize. She had built an entire false history—fathering him with Richard, then Ethan, then me falsely—so she could trade paternity claims for power. She had been playing a game with all of us, and Caleb was the stakes.

Richard was in custody by now. Charged with kidnapping, assault, and murder. All planted evidence. All written in a handwriting that matched my father’s—and hers.

Ethan was missing. Lila was missing. Both silenced.

And I was a fugitive. Wanted for abducting my own son.

I stared into the fire. The flames crackled, casting dancing shadows against the walls. I thought about Vanessa standing in that motel doorway—dry, composed, smiling while they hunted me down. She expected me to run. To disappear. To give up.

She was wrong.

I pulled out my phone. Turned it on. One missed call—from Ethan, again, hours ago. And one voice mail. Left just minutes before the line went dead.

I pressed play. Ethan’s voice came through, quiet and breathless.

“She killed him, Adrian. She killed Father. She killed Richard too. He’s dead. Found in his cell, hanging. Suicide note written in the same handwriting. She’s tying up every loose end. And Adrian… she’s not stopping until Caleb is hers. Forever. And one more thing… the DNA test… she swapped it. I have the real one. It’s in the cabin—Grandpa’s cabin. Hidden under the floorboards. Caleb is yours. One hundred percent. Prove it. Fight her. Don’t let her win.”

The message ended.

I dropped the phone to the table. Beneath my feet, the floorboards creaked.

Ethan had been here. He had hidden the proof. And then she had found him.

I pried up the loose board. Beneath it, wrapped in oilcloth, was a single envelope.

Inside—an official DNA report. Dated the day Caleb was born.

**PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.99%. FATHER: ADRIAN HALE.**

I sat there for a long time, holding that paper, tears mixing with rain on my face. All those lies. All that fear. All that doubt planted in my head by a woman I had once loved. And the truth—simple, undeniable, written in black and white—had been right here all along.

Caleb was mine.
