Chapter 11 - THE CONSEQUENCES

I stayed at the cabin with Caleb and Lila for three days. Ethan sent word through a trusted friend—he was alive, recovering, gathering evidence. Vanessa had declared me a fugitive. She had given interviews on television, weeping beautifully, describing me as unstable, dangerous, mentally unfit. She had asked the public to help find her abducted son.

Every photograph they showed was of me looking angry. Distracted. Unwell. Carefully selected. Every word from her lips was perfectly scripted.

“She is turning the world against you,” Lila said, watching the report. “By the time this is over, even if you prove everything… half the country will believe you hurt Caleb.”

“Let them,” I said. “I only need one person to believe me. And he’s sitting right there.”

I turned. Caleb was standing behind me. He had heard every word.

“She’s not my real mommy anymore, is she?” he asked quietly.

I knelt before him. “She gave birth to you. But being a mother means more than that. It means protecting you. Loving you. Never hurting you. And she… she made very bad choices.”

Caleb thought about it. Then he reached out and touched my chest, right over my heart.

“It doesn’t matter,” he said. “Because you’re right here. And you love me. That’s all I need.”

I held him then, tight, while the reporter on television kept talking about the dangerous, unstable father who had stolen a little boy.

Vanessa was closing in. I knew it. Roadblocks. Search parties. Neighbors questioned. She was hunting us with the full force of the law—and she was the one writing the laws.

Ethan’s final message arrived at midnight: She knows where you are. She’s coming herself. Tomorrow at dawn.
