Chapter 15 - THE LOSS

The house went quiet. Too quiet.

Ethan walked over and unlocked my cuffs. Lila brought Caleb to me. He ran into my arms and buried his face against my chest.

But something had changed. The victory felt hollow. The house—our home—was tainted. Every room held a memory of her. Every wall seemed to whisper her name.

Caleb pulled back and looked around. “Do we have to stay here?”

I looked at the staircase. At the patio doors. At the spot where I had found him chained in the rain.

“No,” I said. “We don’t.”

But losing that house—losing that version of our family—felt like a death. I had lost the woman I loved. I had lost the home I built. I had lost the trust I carried for years. And even though I had won… it felt like I had lost everything that mattered.

That night, Caleb fell asleep in my arms. Ethan and Lila sat beside the fire with me.

“She will go away for a very long time,” Ethan said quietly. “Everything she confessed… plus the evidence we found. There is no coming back from this.”

I nodded. But I couldn’t speak.

I thought of Vanessa sitting in that chair. The tears. The confession. The terrible, twisted love that had destroyed so many lives. She had loved me. I believed that. But love that destroys… isn’t love at all.

It was nearly midnight when Caleb woke up. He sat up suddenly, looked around the room, and asked the question I had been dreading.

“Is she coming back?”

I looked at him. At his small, trusting face.

“No,” I said gently. “She is not. And she will never hurt you again.”

Caleb thought about it. Then he leaned his head against my shoulder.

“Okay,” he whispered. “As long as I have you… it’s okay.”

But I knew it wasn’t okay. Not yet. The scars were there. Mine. His. All of ours. And healing… would take time.
