Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

Dawn broke gray and still.

I stood at the cabin window, watching the treeline. Lila sat beside Caleb by the fire, holding his hand. I had a choice to make.

Run again—disappear into the mountains, change our names, live in hiding forever. Or stay. Face her. Expose her. And risk losing everything.

If I ran, Caleb would grow up looking over his shoulder. Always afraid. Always hiding.

If I stayed… I could lose him. The courts would side with her. The evidence would be twisted. I could go to prison for crimes she committed. And Caleb would be raised by the very woman who had chained him outside.

I turned around. Looked at my son.

“I’m staying,” I said. “I’m not running anymore. Not from her. Not from the truth.”

Lila nodded slowly. “It’s dangerous.”

“Everything about this is dangerous. But he deserves a real home. A real life. He deserves to know that the truth matters. That evil doesn’t win just because it speaks louder.”

I knelt before Caleb. “Daddy has to go away for a little while. But I promise you… I will come back. And when I do… everything will be alright.”

Caleb gripped my shirt. “Take me with you.”

“I can’t. Not yet. But Grandma Lila will stay with you. And Ethan is coming. He will protect you. And I… I will be fighting for you. Every single second.”

He hesitated. Then he nodded solemnly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small silver locket Ethan had given me—the one with Caleb’s photograph inside. He pressed it into my hand.

“For luck,” he said. “So you don’t forget me.”

I closed my hand around it. “I will never forget you. Not for one second.”
