Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Mask
The voice in the hallway didn’t belong there.
That was the first thing I thought.
Not because I didn’t recognize it.
Because I did.
Too well.
For three years, I had heard Richard Moretti’s voice at family dinners, business events, and charity galas.
Calm.
Controlled.
Powerful.
The kind of voice that never needed to become loud because people automatically listened.
But Richard Moretti had been dead for eight years.
I looked at Adrian.
He wasn’t moving.
He wasn’t speaking.
He was staring into the hallway like he had seen a ghost.
“Adrian,” I whispered.
He didn’t respond.
The man outside stepped closer.
The smoke slowly disappeared.
And then we saw him.
Not Richard.
Not exactly.
An older man.
Gray hair.
A scar running along his cheek.
But the same voice.
The same posture.
The same cold confidence.
Luca stepped backward.
“No.””
The man smiled.
“Still afraid of me, Luca?””
Adrian immediately moved in front of me.
“You’re not my father.””
The man tilted his head.
“No.””
A pause.
“But I knew him better than anyone.””
Marco looked at him carefully.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
“My name is Victor Hale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Adrian reacted.
His expression changed.
“You worked for my father.””
Victor nodded.
“For thirty years.””
The room became silent.
Adrian’s voice turned colder.
“You’re the one who helped him.””
Victor smiled.
“Helped him do what?””
“Erase Luca.””
The smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
Then returned.
“You have been told a very emotional version of history.””
Luca stepped forward.
“Because you were there.””
Victor looked at him.
“You were always the dramatic one.””
My stomach tightened.
The way he spoke.
Like Luca wasn’t a person.
Like he was a problem.
Adrian noticed too.
“You knew about him.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my mother tried to protect him.””
“Yes.””
“And you helped my father.””
Victor looked at Adrian.
“I protected the Moretti family.””
“No.””
Adrian’s voice was sharp.
“You protected his power.””
For the first time, Victor’s expression changed.
Anger.
Real anger.
“You have no idea what your father sacrificed.””
Adrian laughed.
A cold sound.
“My father destroyed people.””
Victor stepped closer.
“Your father built something.””
“And destroyed anyone who stood in his way.””
Silence.
I watched Adrian.
This wasn’t just about the company.
This was about years of believing his father was someone he could admire.
And now he was discovering the truth.
Victor looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
“So this is the reason everyone is suddenly brave.””
My entire body went cold.
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“Don’t look at her.””
Victor smiled.
“There he is.””
“What?””
“The son your mother wanted.””
Adrian froze.
Victor continued.
“Not the businessman. Not the heir. The man.””
I hated that he sounded like he knew Adrian better than I did.
“I don’t understand,” I said.
Victor looked at me.
“You really don’t?””
“No.””
“Your child changes everything.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Victor ignored him.
“Richard spent his life building a legacy. But he knew something.””
“What?””
Victor looked at my stomach.
“Blood matters.””
The words made me sick.
“My baby is not a business asset.””
Victor smiled slightly.
“Exactly why Richard feared you.””
I stared at him.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
“You were the one person Adrian chose without considering the family name.””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
Victor continued.
“You made him unpredictable.””
I remembered Vanessa’s words.
The same idea.
Claire was the one thing Richard couldn’t control.
And suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t about me personally.
It was about what I represented.
A future Adrian chose himself.
Not one chosen for him.
A loud sound came from outside.
Sirens.
Someone had called security.
Victor looked toward the door.
His confidence didn’t disappear.
That scared me.
“You think this ends with me being arrested?””
Adrian stared at him.
“It ends with the truth.””
Victor laughed.
“The truth?””
He looked around the room.
“Truth is a luxury for people who have power.””
Luca stepped forward.
“You’re protecting him even now.””
Victor looked at him.
“You don’t understand what your father was trying to prevent.””
“No.””
Luca’s voice shook.
“I understand perfectly.””
He pointed at Adrian.
“He was afraid of him.””
Everyone went quiet.
Victor looked at Adrian.
“You want answers?””
Adrian didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.””
Victor smiled.
“Then ask your brother.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
Victor looked at Luca.
“Ask him why he disappeared willingly.””
The room froze.
Adrian turned.
“What is he talking about?””
Luca looked away.
And that was the first moment I saw hesitation from him.
Not fear.
Guilt.
“Luca.””
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“What happened?””
Luca closed his eyes.
“I didn’t tell you everything.””
The words hurt.
Another secret.
Another person hiding the truth.
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Of course.””
“I had a reason.””
“Everyone has a reason.””
The pain in Adrian’s voice was obvious.
Luca looked at him.
“I left because I thought I was protecting you.””
“From what?””
Luca hesitated.
“From me.””
Nobody understood.
Except maybe Luca.
“I was the older son.””
Adrian stared.
“What?””
“Richard wanted me to inherit everything first.””
The room went silent.
“But after I refused to become like him, he chose you.””
Adrian looked confused.
“Then why hide you?””
“Because Richard realized something.””
Luca looked at him.
“He couldn’t control me.””
A pause.
“So he created the perfect heir instead.””
The words hit Adrian.
“You.””
Adrian looked away.
Because he understood.
Richard hadn’t hidden Luca because he was unimportant.
He had hidden him because he was dangerous.
Because he could expose everything.
Victor shook his head.
“You are all wasting time.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Where is Rachel?””
Victor smiled.
“You still care about the lawyer?””
“She tried to help Claire.””
“She tried to fix a mistake she helped create.””
My heart tightened.
“What mistake?””
Victor looked at me.
“Rachel was the one who found out about your pregnancy.””
Adrian moved.
“What?””
Victor continued.
“She was supposed to report it.””
I felt sick.
“Report it to who?””
Victor didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Everyone knew.
Richard.
The family.
The people controlling everything.
“But she didn’t,” Victor said.
“Because she made the mistake of growing a conscience.””
Marco looked at him.
“Where is she?””
Victor smiled.
“You’ll find her.””
“How?””
“Ask Vanessa.””
The name surprised me.
Again.
Victor noticed.
“She knows everything.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“She was involved?””
Victor laughed.
“Vanessa was the only person who tried to stop Richard.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt exhausted.
Everyone was connected.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
And somehow, I was still standing in the middle of it.
Victor turned toward the door.
Security footsteps approached.
Adrian stopped him.
“You’re not leaving.””
Victor looked back.
“You think this is the end?””
“Yes.””
Victor smiled.
“No, Adrian.””
He pointed toward the letter from his mother.
“The end was written years ago.””
Then he looked at me.
“Your child is the last piece.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“What does that mean?””
Victor didn’t answer.
Security entered the room.
Two officers grabbed him.
But before they took him away, he said one final thing.
Something that made my blood run cold.
“Ask your wife what she was planning to tell you before the divorce.””
I froze.
Because I knew exactly what he meant.
Adrian turned toward me.
Slowly.
“Claire?””
I couldn’t speak.
Not because I was hiding something dangerous.
Because I had forgotten.
Three years ago.
Before everything collapsed.
I had been planning a surprise.
Something I never got to tell him.
Adrian stared at me.
“What was he talking about?””
My heart pounded.
Because suddenly, the past was opening another door.
A door I had locked away.
I looked at Adrian.
And whispered:
“Before we got divorced…”
My voice shook.
“I was going to tell you something.””
He waited.
“What?””
I swallowed.
“I was pregnant.””
The room went completely silent.
Adrian’s face lost all color.
“What?””
I looked down.
“The first time.””
His expression broke.
“I don’t understand.””
“I lost the baby.””
The words were barely audible.
“But I never told you.””
Adrian stared at me.
And for the first time since I met him…
I saw him completely shattered.
“Claire…”
“I was going to tell you that night.””
A tear slipped down my face.
“The night you asked for a divorce.””
Adrian stepped back.
Like the truth physically hurt.
“I had no idea.””
“I know.””
“And you went through that alone?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because yes.
I had.
The silence that followed was worse than any argument.
Then Adrian looked at the letter.
At Luca.
At everything that had been taken from us.
And he whispered:
“My father destroyed our marriage before we even knew we were losing it.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Luca’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“Adrian.””
“What?””
Luca slowly raised his eyes.
“It’s Rachel.””
“Where is she?””
Luca answered.
Then listened.
A few seconds later, his face turned pale.
“What happened?””
He looked at Adrian.
“She found the original divorce file.””
A pause.
“And she says there is one more name on it.””
Adrian frowned.
“Whose?””
Luca looked at me.
May you like
Then answered:
“Claire Bennett.””
