Chapter 8: The Brother Hidden in the Shadows
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Not Adrian.
Not me.
Not Marco.
The man standing in the storage room doorway looked like someone who had walked out of a forgotten photograph.
Older.
Tired.
Carrying decades of secrets on his face.
But the resemblance was undeniable.
The same dark eyes.
The same sharp jawline.
The same expression Adrian wore when he was trying to hide pain.
Except this man didn’t hide anything.
He looked broken.
Adrian stared at him.
I watched the impossible happen.
The strongest man I knew looked like a child who had just found the family he thought he lost.
“Who are you?””
Adrian’s voice was barely above a whisper.
The man took a slow breath.
“My name is Luca Moretti.””
The name echoed through the room.
The name that had appeared on an old photograph.
The name his father erased.
The name his mother tried to protect.
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
Luca’s expression softened.
“I know this is difficult.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You’re not real.””
The words sounded strange.
Almost painful.
Because part of him wasn’t denying Luca.
He was protecting himself from believing.
Luca looked down.
“My entire life, people have told me the same thing.””
Marco stepped forward carefully.
“Adrian.””
But Adrian raised a hand.
Stopping him.
His eyes never left Luca.
“My mother told me I was her only child.””
Luca nodded.
“She did what she had to do.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means our father made sure you would never know me.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Adrian.
His expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Because deep down, he had always known his father was capable of controlling things.
But this?
This was something else.
“What happened?”” Adrian asked.
Luca looked around the storage room.
At the boxes.
The photographs.
The pieces of a life hidden away.
“Your father and I were never supposed to exist in the same world.””
“What?””
Luca looked at him.
“Richard Moretti built his empire on one belief.””
His voice became colder.
“Control everything.””
I felt a chill.
“Your father wasn’t afraid of losing money,” Luca continued.
“He was afraid of losing power.””
Adrian stared at him.
“So he hid you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Luca looked down.
“Because I was proof of something he wanted erased.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian asked:
“What?””
Luca hesitated.
And somehow, that hesitation made the answer worse.
“The Moretti fortune wasn’t supposed to belong to him.””
Marco frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Luca looked at him.
“Your grandfather left the company to both of us.””
Adrian froze.
“Both?””
“Yes.””
My heart started beating faster.
Another secret.
Another thing hidden.
Luca continued.
“When my father died, Richard changed the documents.””
Adrian looked at the letter in his hand.
“My mother knew.””
Luca nodded.
“She found out.””
“And she did nothing?””
A flash of pain crossed Luca’s face.
“She tried.””
The room went quiet.
“She tried to expose him. She tried to protect me.””
Luca looked at Adrian.
“But Richard gave her a choice.””
Adrian’s face darkened.
“What choice?””
“Lose one son.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
I covered my mouth.
Luca continued.
“Your father threatened to destroy everything. He said if she fought him, she would lose both of us.””
Adrian looked away.
His mother.
The woman he remembered as gentle.
The woman who always told him to be kind.
She had been trapped.
“She chose you,” Luca said.
Adrian looked back.
“What?””
“She chose to keep you safe.””
The room went silent.
I watched Adrian struggle with the truth.
Because for years, he had believed his mother left him a perfect childhood.
Now he was learning it was built from sacrifices he never knew about.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Luca looked at him.
“Because she knew what would happen if you knew.””
“What?””
“You would fight him.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
“And Richard would destroy you.””
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
Because everyone who knew Adrian knew one thing.
He would never accept injustice.
Especially from his own family.
A sudden sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone turned.
Marco moved toward the window.
“Someone’s here.””
Adrian immediately stepped closer to me.
Protective.
Automatic.
“How many?””
Marco looked outside.
“One car.””
Luca’s expression changed.
“They found me.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Who?””
Luca didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
We all knew.
Richard Moretti might have been dead.
But someone was still protecting his secrets.
The storage room door suddenly shook.
Someone was trying to open it.
Adrian moved.
“Stay behind me.””
I almost argued.
Almost.
Then I remembered something.
This wasn’t the same man who left me alone.
This was the man who stood between me and danger without hesitation.
The door handle moved again.
Marco grabbed a metal bar from the floor.
Luca looked terrified.
Not for himself.
For us.
“Adrian.””
“What?””
“You need to listen to me.””
“Not now.””
“No.””
Luca stepped closer.
“Now.””
The door shook harder.
Luca lowered his voice.
“The person behind this isn’t trying to expose the Moretti family.””
Adrian frowned.
“Then what are they doing?””
Luca looked at me.
And my blood went cold.
“They’re trying to get Claire.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
Luca looked at Adrian.
“Your father had one last insurance plan.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What plan?””
Luca swallowed.
“The Moretti heir.””
I touched my stomach instinctively.
“No.””
Luca nodded.
“The child.””
Adrian moved immediately.
“No one is taking my child.””
The door shook again.
Harder.
Luca continued.
“Your father believed the next generation would determine control of the company.””
Marco looked confused.
“But Richard is dead.””
“Yes.””
Luca’s eyes darkened.
“But the people who served him are not.””
A loud crash.
The lock started breaking.
Adrian looked at Marco.
“Get Claire out.””
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Claire.””
“I’m not leaving you.””
“This isn’t about pride.””
“I know.””
My voice softened.
“It’s about our baby.””
For a moment, we just looked at each other.
Then Adrian nodded.
Not because he agreed.
Because he understood.
The door burst open.
But nobody entered.
A smoke canister rolled across the floor.
Marco shouted.
“Move!””
Everything happened at once.
Smoke filled the room.
People shouted.
I felt Adrian’s hand grab mine.
“Stay with me.””
I coughed.
“I’m here.””
We moved toward the back exit.
Then I heard a voice.
A woman’s voice.
Familiar.
“Adrian.””
I stopped.
Because I knew that voice.
Rachel.
The smoke cleared slightly.
And there she stood.
Not scared.
Not running.
Holding a folder.
“You have no idea what you’re protecting.””
Adrian stared at her.
“You betrayed Claire.””
Rachel looked at me.
Her expression changed.
Not guilt.
Sadness.
“I was trying to protect her.””
I laughed.
A bitter sound.
“By helping destroy my marriage?””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“You think that was the plan?””
“Wasn’t it?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“The divorce was never supposed to happen.””
Adrian went still.
“What?””
Rachel looked at him.
“Your father wanted Claire gone.””
The words cut through the room.
“But he never wanted you divorced.””
Adrian frowned.
“Why?””
Rachel looked at my stomach.
And her next words changed everything.
“Because the child was supposed to be the future of Moretti Capital.””
I felt sick.
“No.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“I found out about the pregnancy before you did.””
Adrian’s face became furious.
“How?””
Rachel looked down.
“Because your father had someone monitoring Claire.””
My hands trembled.
“And you helped him.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“I tried to stop him.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I failed.””
The room went quiet.
Then Luca spoke.
“Rachel.””
She looked at him.
And froze.
Because apparently…
She knew him.
Adrian noticed.
“You know each other?””
Rachel looked away.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
“How?””
Luca answered.
“She was there the night my mother disappeared.””
The words made everyone freeze.
Rachel looked terrified.
“I didn’t know what they were going to do.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“What did they do?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
She looked at him.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“Your mother wasn’t the only person Richard Moretti tried to erase.””
A silence followed.
Then she handed Adrian the folder.
Inside was a document.
Adrian opened it.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Rachel’s voice was barely audible.
“The original inheritance agreement.””
Marco looked over.
“And?””
Adrian’s face turned pale.
Because the document revealed something impossible.
The company.
The fortune.
The entire Moretti empire.
It had never belonged to Richard alone.
But that wasn’t what shocked him.
At the bottom of the document was a second signature.
One that should not have existed.
A signature from someone who had been dead for eight years.
Adrian looked at me.
His voice shaking.
“My mother signed this after she died.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that meant only one thing.
Someone had been using Elena Moretti’s name.
Someone alive.
Someone close.
Then Luca looked toward the door.
His expression changed.
And he whispered:
“He’s here.””
Adrian turned.
“Who?””
Luca stared into the smoke-filled hallway.
“The man who made sure I disappeared.””
A shadow appeared outside.
A familiar voice followed.
“Hello, Adrian.””
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It was impossible.
It was a voice from the past.
A voice that should never have been here.
Richard Moretti had been dead for eight years.
May you like
But someone wearing his voice said:
“You’ve always been such a disappointment, son.””
