Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
Vanessa Russo stood at the end of the hospital hallway like she had been waiting for us.
Not waiting by accident.
Waiting for us.
That was the first thought that entered my mind.
The second was worse.
She knew.
I didn’t know what she knew.
But she knew something.
Adrian’s hand tightened at his side.
I had spent three years learning his expressions, his silences, the small movements he made when he was angry or afraid.
And right now, Adrian Moretti was afraid.
Not for himself.
For me.
“Vanessa,” he said.
His voice was colder than I had ever heard it.
The woman who had once been the ghost haunting our marriage walked toward us slowly.
She looked almost exactly how I remembered her from photographs.
Perfect.
Dark hair.
Expensive clothes.
The kind of confidence that came from knowing people would always make room for her.
But there was something different in her eyes.
She looked tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“Adrian,” she replied.
Then her eyes moved to me.
To my stomach.
And she smiled.
Not warmly.
Not cruelly.
Something in between.
Something that made my skin crawl.
“Congratulations, Claire.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
Because she said them like she had been expecting this moment.
I stepped closer to Adrian without realizing it.
“What are you doing here?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Isn’t it obvious?””
“No.””
Her smile faded.
“I came to tell you the truth.””
Adrian immediately stepped between us.
“Whatever you have to say can wait.””
“No, Adrian.””
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“It can’t.””
The hallway went quiet.
Even the hospital sounds seemed distant.
Machines beeping.
Footsteps.
Voices behind closed doors.
All of it disappeared.
Because the woman Adrian had once loved was standing in front of me, and somehow, she was connected to the secret surrounding my child.
“Explain,” Adrian said.
Vanessa looked at him.
“You still don’t understand what happened.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Then explain it.””
She glanced at Marco.
Then at me.
“I need to speak to Claire alone.””
The answer came immediately.
“No.””
Adrian didn’t raise his voice.
He didn’t need to.
The warning was clear.
Vanessa looked almost disappointed.
“You really think I’m the danger?””
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
“I don’t know what you are.””
For a second, something flashed across her face.
Pain.
Real pain.
Then it disappeared.
“After all this time, you still don’t know me.””
I felt something twist in my chest.
Because that sentence sounded familiar.
I had said almost the same thing to Adrian before our divorce.
After three years together, I had felt like I didn’t know my own husband.
Maybe Vanessa felt the same.
Maybe everyone around Adrian eventually became a stranger to him.
“Why are you here?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Because someone is trying to destroy both of you.””
Adrian laughed once.
Cold.
Humorless.
“You expect us to believe that?””
“I expect you to remember what happened three years ago.””
The hallway seemed to freeze.
Adrian’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
“What about three years ago?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You never asked why I left.””
My stomach tightened.
I hated that sentence.
Because there was a history between them.
A history I was never part of.
A history that always seemed to exist in the room even when Vanessa wasn’t there.
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“You told me you wanted a different life.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. I told you I couldn’t stay.””
“Why?””
Her eyes moved to me.
“Because I found out something about your family.””
Marco stepped forward.
“Vanessa.””
She ignored him.
“I found out your father had been manipulating things behind your back for years.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The word hung there.
I looked between them.
“So you’re saying Adrian’s father caused our divorce?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I’m saying your divorce was never supposed to happen.””
The sentence hit me harder than I expected.
Because a small part of me had secretly wished someone would say that.
That it wasn’t because I wasn’t enough.
That Adrian hadn’t simply stopped loving me.
But wishes were dangerous.
Especially when they involved people who had already hurt you.
Adrian stepped closer.
“What did my father do?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew one day you would need it.””
Adrian stared at it.
“What is that?””
“Proof.””
She handed it to him.
He opened it immediately.
Inside was a photograph.
I couldn’t see it clearly.
But Adrian’s reaction told me enough.
His face went pale.
“What is this?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“The day Claire filed for divorce.””
My eyes widened.
“I didn’t file.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I know.””
A cold feeling spread through my body.
“What?””
She turned to Adrian.
“Your father arranged the paperwork before either of you agreed to anything.””
Adrian stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Her voice became quieter.
“You really think a man like Richard Moretti would sit back and watch his son choose a woman he considered a weakness?””
Adrian’s hands tightened around the photograph.
“My father respected Claire.””
Vanessa gave a sad smile.
“No, Adrian. He respected what you could build. Claire was the one thing he couldn’t control.””
The words hurt.
Not because they were about me.
Because they sounded possible.
I remembered Richard Moretti.
Adrian’s father.
A powerful man who never raised his voice because he never needed to.
At our wedding, he had hugged me and called me family.
But his eyes had always felt like they were measuring me.
Like he was deciding whether I belonged.
“What did he do?”” Adrian asked.
Vanessa looked at him.
“He created a situation where you believed Claire betrayed you.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence terrified me.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“What did he show me?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“He showed you messages.””
I felt Adrian go still.
Messages.
I looked at him.
“What messages?””
His eyes shifted away.
And suddenly I knew.
There was something else.
Something I didn’t know.
“Adrian?””
He didn’t speak.
Vanessa did.
“Three years ago, Richard gave Adrian evidence that you were planning to leave him.””
My breath caught.
“That’s insane.””
“Yes,” Vanessa said.
“Because it wasn’t true.””
Adrian finally looked at me.
“Claire…”
I stepped back.
“What messages?””
His silence answered before his words did.
“You thought I was leaving you?””
His jaw tightened.
“I thought you were going to leave me first.””
I stared at him.
After everything.
After the divorce.
After all the pain.
That was the reason?
“You never asked me?””
“I saw the messages.””
“What messages?””
Adrian looked down.
“They looked like you were meeting someone.””
I laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who, Adrian?””
“Daniel Hayes.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel.
My college friend.
My business mentor.
The man Adrian had always disliked.
“Daniel helped me with my foundation work.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
“Because the messages were convincing.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I remembered.
I remembered that month.
The secret meetings.
The late-night calls.
But not because I was cheating.
Because Daniel had been helping me prepare something.
Something I never got to finish.
“You never asked me.””
Adrian’s face fell slightly.
“No.””
“You just believed the worst.””
“I was wrong.””
The words were quiet.
But they hurt.
Because being wrong didn’t undo what happened.
It didn’t undo sixty-three days alone.
It didn’t undo all the nights I cried in a small apartment wondering why the man I loved stopped fighting.
Vanessa watched us silently.
Then she spoke.
“There’s more.””
I looked at her.
“What more?””
She looked at Adrian.
“The messages weren’t just fake.””
She paused.
“Someone created them using Claire’s old phone.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“The person who set you up had access to Claire’s accounts.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And this time, there was no hesitation.
“The same person who accessed your pregnancy records.””
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly, all the pieces were connecting.
The divorce.
The hidden clause.
The medical records.
The pregnancy.
Someone had been controlling our lives.
But the worst part was…
They had been doing it from inside our circle.
Adrian’s phone rang.
He looked down.
A number appeared.
Private.
He answered.
“Hello?””
The person on the other end spoke.
I watched Adrian’s expression change.
“What did you say?””
A pause.
Then his voice became dangerous.
“Don’t touch her.””
My heart dropped.
“Adrian?””
He ignored me.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
Then he ended the call.
Marco looked at him.
“What happened?””
Adrian looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.
“Claire…”
“What?””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“The person who has been watching you…”
He swallowed.
“They have your ultrasound appointment schedule.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Then he looked toward the maternity room door.
“They’re already inside the hospital.””
