Chapter 10: The Truth We Were Never Allowed to Know

The name on the divorce file was mine.

Claire Bennett.

For a moment, I wondered if I had misheard him.

Because after everything we had uncovered—the hidden brother, the stolen inheritance, the fake messages, the manipulation—I thought I had already reached the deepest part of the truth.

I was wrong.

Again.

“Why is my name on it?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked at Luca.

Luca looked at the floor.

Marco looked at the documents.

And that silence told me something.

Something had been hidden from me too.

“Adrian.””

He looked at me.

His expression was full of confusion.

“I don’t know.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because somehow, those were the words I had heard too many times.

I don’t know.

I didn’t know.

Nobody knew.

And somehow, everyone’s lack of answers had destroyed years of our lives.

“Find Rachel,” Adrian said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The dangerous kind of calm.

Marco nodded immediately.

“I’ll call her.””

While Marco stepped away, Adrian stayed beside me.

Not touching me.

Not assuming he had the right.

Just standing there.

And somehow, that meant more.

“I’m sorry.””

The words were quiet.

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For every moment you needed me and I wasn’t there.””

I looked away.

Because forgiveness wasn’t something that happened because someone finally apologized.

Some wounds didn’t disappear because someone admitted they caused them.

“I don’t know how to fix this.””

Adrian nodded.

“I know.””

A pause.

“But I want to try.””

Before I could answer, Marco returned.

His face was serious.

“She’s coming.””

“How long?”” Adrian asked.

“Twenty minutes.””

Nobody spoke.

Twenty minutes felt like a lifetime.

We moved into the old study inside the Moretti estate.

A room that looked untouched for years.

Richard Moretti’s world.

His books.

His desk.

His secrets.

I stood near the window, watching the rain fall.

The city looked different.

Like the place I had lived in for years had been hiding something from me.

Adrian walked toward the desk.

His fingers brushed against an old photograph.

His mother.

Luca.

Himself.

Three people who should have had a different life.

“Do you hate him?”” I asked.

Adrian didn’t turn.

“Who?””

“Your father.””

A long silence.

Then:

“I don’t know.””

I looked at him.

He smiled sadly.

“That seems to be my answer today.””

The honesty almost hurt.

“I spent my whole life trying to become someone he respected.””

He looked at the photograph.

“I thought if I worked hard enough, if I built enough, if I became successful enough…”

He stopped.

“I thought maybe he would finally see me.””

My chest tightened.

Because I understood.

Not the same way.

But I understood wanting love from someone who only gave approval.

“And did he?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

His voice became softer.

“He saw an heir.””

A pause.

“Not a son.””

The door opened.

Rachel walked in.

She looked completely different from the woman I remembered.

The confident lawyer.

The woman who always had the perfect answer.

Now she looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

Adrian immediately turned.

“Where is the file?””

Rachel looked at him.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I felt my heart tighten.

Those words again.

Sorry.

Everyone was sorry.

But apologies didn’t give back years.

“Why is my name on it?”” I asked.

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Because you weren’t supposed to be the victim.””

Silence.

“What?””

She walked closer.

“The original divorce agreement wasn’t created to separate you and Adrian.””

Adrian frowned.

“Then what was it for?””

Rachel looked at him.

“To protect Claire.””

I stared at her.

“I don’t understand.””

She opened her bag.

And pulled out a document.

Not a copy.

Not a photograph.

The original.

“The day before the divorce was filed, I discovered something.””

“What?””

Rachel looked at Adrian.

“Your father had created a trust.””

Marco stepped closer.

“What kind of trust?””

Rachel placed the document on the table.

“A trust for Claire and any children she had with Adrian.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Rachel nodded.

“Richard Moretti knew Adrian would never abandon you if he knew the truth.””

Adrian’s face darkened.

“What truth?””

Rachel looked at me.

“That you were not chosen by accident.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She took a breath.

“Your grandmother.””

I froze.

“My grandmother?””

“Yes.””

Nobody moved.

Rachel continued.

“Claire, your grandmother was Elena Moretti’s closest friend.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“It’s the reason Richard feared you.””

I looked at Adrian.

He looked just as shocked.

“My family?””

Rachel nodded.

“Your grandmother helped Elena hide evidence against Richard.””

Luca stepped forward.

“What evidence?””

Rachel looked at him.

“The proof that Richard stole the company.””

The room went quiet.

Again.

“But why me?”” I asked.

Rachel looked at the documents.

“Because your grandmother kept the final copy.””

My heart raced.

“I never knew.””

“I know.””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“That was the point.””

Adrian looked at her.

“So the divorce?””

Rachel nodded.

“Richard wanted Claire removed from your life before she found out.””

I swallowed.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because I made a mistake.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“What mistake?””

Rachel met his eyes.

“I told him Claire had inherited your grandmother’s private files.””

My stomach dropped.

“I didn’t have any files.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I know.””

A pause.

“He believed you did.””

Adrian looked at me.

“So everything…”

Rachel nodded.

“The fake messages. The divorce. The pregnancy records.””

Her voice became quiet.

“It was all to isolate Claire.””

I felt dizzy.

Because suddenly, the divorce wasn’t just a broken marriage.

It was an attack.

Someone had spent years trying to remove me from Adrian’s life.

And we had helped them.

We had done the work ourselves.

“We need to find those files,” Adrian said.

Rachel looked at him.

“You already have them.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

She pointed toward the old desk.

“Your mother hid them here.””

Adrian walked toward the desk.

Slowly.

He opened the drawer.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something.

A small hidden compartment.

He pressed the side.

The panel opened.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

My hands trembled.

Because after everything…

The answer was finally here.

Adrian opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

And one final letter from Elena Moretti.

He read silently.

Then handed it to me.

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was elegant.

Gentle.

*Claire,*

*If you are reading this, then my son finally knows the truth.*

I looked at Adrian.

Then continued.

*I knew from the moment I met you that you were the only person strong enough to stand beside Adrian. Not behind him. Not beneath him. Beside him.*

My eyes blurred.

*Richard believed power came from controlling people. I believed love came from trusting them. That is why he feared you.*

I kept reading.

*If Adrian lost you, he would become exactly what Richard wanted. A man who valued victory over happiness.*

A tear slipped down my face.

*But if you found your way back to each other, then maybe my son finally escaped the shadow of his father.*

I stopped.

The room was silent.

Adrian looked at me.

Not as a husband.

Not as a billionaire.

Just Adrian.

The man I loved.

The man who lost me.

The man who had finally found the truth.

Outside, the storm began to fade.

For the first time in years, everything was quiet.

Months later, the headlines called it the biggest corporate scandal in New York history.

Richard Moretti’s hidden crimes became public.

The stolen inheritance was restored.

Luca became part of the Moretti family openly.

Rachel testified and rebuilt her life.

Vanessa disappeared from the spotlight, but before she left, she sent me one message.

*I’m glad he finally chose you.*

I didn’t know what the future would look like.

Adrian and I didn’t magically become the couple we were before.

Some things couldn’t be repaired overnight.

Trust had to be rebuilt.

Love had to be chosen again.

Every day.

But one morning, six months later, I stood beside the same hospital window where everything changed.

Adrian stood beside me.

Holding our daughter.

Our little girl.

The child who survived every secret.

Every lie.

Every attempt to erase her existence.

“She has your eyes,” I whispered.

Adrian smiled.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked down at our daughter.

“She has your strength.””

For once, I didn’t argue.

Because I knew something now.

People can steal documents.

They can manipulate stories.

They can hide the truth for years.

But they cannot erase what was meant to survive.

Adrian once lost me because we believed someone else’s version of our story.

But in the end…

May you like

We found the truth.

And we wrote our own.
