Thinking

Chapter 7: The Meeting That Changed Everything

The rain started before we reached the private terminal.

A heavy Manhattan storm.

The kind that made the city disappear behind sheets of water and turned every streetlight into a blurry reflection.

I watched the rain slide down the window and tried to understand what was happening.

Rachel Whitmore.

My lawyer.

The woman who promised to protect me.

Meeting Vanessa Russo.

The woman I spent three years believing was the reason my marriage fell apart.

It felt impossible.

But I had learned something in the last few hours.

Impossible things were usually the ones people worked hardest to hide.

“Do you think Vanessa is involved?”” I asked.

Adrian sat beside me silently.

For several seconds, he didn’t answer.

That alone told me something.

Because Adrian had opinions about everything.

“Adrian.””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

The answer surprised me.

Not because he said it.

Because he meant it.

“I thought you trusted her.””

His eyes moved toward the window.

“I did.””

A painful silence followed.

“Then why did you think she betrayed you?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because I was angry.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He looked at me.

“I was hurt.””

The honesty caught me off guard.

“When I saw those messages, I didn’t think clearly.””

“What messages?””

He looked down.

“The ones that made it seem like you and Daniel were planning a life together.””

I shook my head.

“Adrian, Daniel was helping me.””

“I know that now.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You know that now because someone told you.””

He stayed silent.

“You never asked me.””

“I know.””

“You never gave me a chance.””

“I know.””

The repetition hurt.

Because he wasn’t defending himself.

He was accepting it.

And somehow, that was harder.

“I spent two months thinking you left because I wasn’t enough.””

His expression changed.

“Claire…”

“I thought maybe you loved Vanessa more.””

He looked at me immediately.

“No.””

The answer was so fast.

So certain.

I stared at him.

“Then why did you say nothing?””

His voice dropped.

“Because I was a coward.””

I didn’t expect that.

Adrian Moretti calling himself a coward sounded impossible.

But maybe that was the point.

Maybe the man I thought was made of stone was just someone who had spent years pretending he couldn’t break.

The car stopped.

Marco looked back.

“We’re here.””

The private terminal was smaller than I expected.

Quiet.

Almost empty.

A place where wealthy people disappeared without anyone noticing.

Exactly the kind of place someone like Rachel would choose.

We stepped inside.

A security guard immediately approached.

“Mr. Moretti.””

Adrian nodded.

“We’re looking for someone.””

The guard looked nervous.

“Rachel Whitmore?””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Yes.””

The guard hesitated.

“She was here.””

“When?””

“About twenty minutes ago.””

My heart dropped.

“Is she still here?””

The guard shook his head.

“No.””

“Where did she go?””

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“She left with someone.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Who?””

The man looked at his tablet.

Then answered:

“Vanessa Russo.””

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

Again.

Everything led back to her.

Adrian noticed my expression.

“Claire.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“What?””

“I don’t understand.””

Neither did he.

And for once, we were equally lost.

The guard continued.

“They weren’t arguing.””

Marco frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“They looked like they were working together.””

The words hurt.

Because I wanted to believe Vanessa was different.

I wanted to believe someone was finally telling us the truth.

But maybe she was just another person using us.

Adrian walked away from the desk.

His phone rang.

He answered.

“Talk.””

A voice came through.

I couldn’t hear everything.

But I heard one name.

“Luca.””

Adrian froze.

The color drained from his face.

“What did you say?””

A pause.

Then:

“No.””

He ended the call.

Marco immediately looked at him.

“What happened?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who was that?””

He looked at me.

“Someone found Luca.””

The name again.

The unknown brother.

The secret hidden inside the Moretti family.

“Where?””

Adrian looked at his phone.

“At the place where my mother kept her belongings.””

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly, everything connected.

The photograph.

The key.

The hidden child.

His mother’s secret.

Someone wasn’t just trying to destroy our marriage.

They were trying to expose the Moretti family.

Or maybe destroy it.

“We need to go there,” Marco said.

Adrian nodded.

But before we moved, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I stared at it.

Adrian noticed.

“Don’t answer.””

Something about his voice made me stop.

“Why?””

“Because whoever it is wants us to react.””

The phone kept ringing.

Then stopped.

A message appeared.

I opened it before Adrian could stop me.

One sentence.

*Ask Adrian why his mother died protecting your child.*

My blood froze.

“What?””

Adrian looked at my phone.

His expression changed instantly.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

But he did.

Not completely.

Yet something in his face told me the words touched a memory.

“My mother died protecting my child?””

He repeated it quietly.

Marco looked at him.

“Adrian?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

But his voice lacked confidence.

The rain outside became louder.

And suddenly, the person behind all of this didn’t feel like a stranger anymore.

They knew things.

Things no one should know.

Things even Adrian didn’t know.

We drove across the city.

Nobody spoke.

When we arrived at the old Moretti estate storage building, I understood why Adrian’s family kept secrets.

The place looked abandoned.

Dust-covered windows.

Rusting gates.

A building that had once belonged to one of New York’s most powerful families.

Now forgotten.

Adrian used the key Vanessa gave him.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of them.

Old photographs.

Documents.

Memories.

A life hidden away.

Adrian walked slowly.

Like he was afraid of what he might find.

Then he stopped.

A small wooden box sat on a shelf.

His name was written on it.

Not his full name.

Just:

*A.*

He picked it up.

His hands shook.

“What is that?”” I asked.

“My mother’s.””

He opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Yellowed with age.

Adrian unfolded it.

And the first line made him stop.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then he handed it to me.

I read.

*Adrian, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect both of my sons.*

I looked up.

Both.

My heart raced.

The letter continued.

*Your father will tell you that Luca never existed. He will tell you that I was sick, confused, and unable to remember things clearly. Do not believe him.*

Adrian closed his eyes.

His mother knew.

She knew everything.

I continued reading.

*The day Claire Bennett entered your life, I knew she was different. She saw the person behind the Moretti name. That frightened your father.*

My breath caught.

The letter was about me.

*If you ever lose her, know this: it was never because love disappeared. It was because someone feared what the two of you could become together.*

Adrian looked away.

Then I reached the final lines.

And my hands began to shake.

*Adrian, the child Claire carries is not the first secret your father tried to erase.*

I looked at him.

He looked terrified.

The final sentence was written darker than the rest.

As if his mother had pressed the pen harder.

*Your father did not know I saved Luca. But he also does not know I saved someone else.*

The room went silent.

Someone else.

Another secret.

Another person.

Then we heard a sound.

A floorboard creaking behind us.

Adrian immediately stepped in front of me.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

The shadow moved.

Slowly.

A man stepped out from behind the shelves.

Older.

Tired.

But with the same dark eyes as Adrian.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Because he knew that face.

Even after twenty-nine years.

Even after believing he never existed.

The man looked at him.

And whispered:

“Adrian.””

May you like

A pause.

“I’m your brother.””
