Chapter 5: The Woman From Before
Rachel Moore arrived two hours later.
I watched her car pull into our driveway through the living room window.
The woman who stepped out looked nothing like the villain I had imagined.
She looked tired.
Older than the picture.
Like someone who had spent years carrying a secret that became heavier every day.
My father opened the door before she knocked.
For a moment, they just stared at each other.
“Marcus.””
“Rachel.””
Her eyes moved past him.
They landed on me.
I expected guilt.
Pity.
Something.
Instead, she looked heartbroken.
“Emma.””
Hearing my name from a stranger felt strange.
“How do you know me?””
She swallowed.
“Because I knew your mother.””
That answer gave me no comfort.
It only created more questions.
My father stepped aside.
“Come in.””
We sat in the living room.
Nobody touched the coffee my father made.
Rachel held a small envelope in her hands.
“I should have come sooner.””
My father looked at her.
“Why didn’t you?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Nicole made sure I couldn’t.””
I leaned forward.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Three years ago, when your father started seeing Nicole, I tried to warn him.””
My father frowned.
“You never called.””
“I did.””
He looked confused.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Rachel reached into her purse.
She pulled out an old phone.
“I left voicemails.””
My father stared.
“I never got them.””
“Because Nicole intercepted them.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at my father.
“Did she have access to your phone?””
He nodded slowly.
“Back then, yes.””
Rachel placed the phone on the table.
“I saved everything.””
She pressed a button.
A recording played.
Her voice.
Younger.
More desperate.
“Marcus, please call me back. You need to know who Nicole really is.””
Another message.
“Marcus, this isn’t about jealousy. Your daughter is in danger.””
Another.
“Please believe me.””
The recordings stopped.
My father looked sick.
“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””
Rachel looked down.
“Because Nicole threatened me.””
“With what?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then she opened the envelope.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages.
Photographs.
“She knew things about my past.””
My father read the papers.
His face became harder with every line.
“What is this?””
“Insurance.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Nicole was collecting information on everyone around her.””
“Why?””
“Because she doesn’t build relationships.””
Rachel’s voice lowered.
“She builds control.””
A chill moved through me.
It explained everything.
The way Nicole twisted conversations.
The way she always made herself the victim.
The way she needed everyone to depend on her.
“She wanted your father isolated,” Rachel continued.
My father looked up.
“Why?””
Rachel took a breath.
“Because your father inherited money after your mother died.””
I froze.
My father shook his head.
“That wasn’t much.””
“It was enough.””
“What are you saying?””
Rachel looked directly at him.
“She didn’t marry you because she loved you.””
The silence after those words was unbearable.
My father looked away.
I watched the pain cross his face.
Not anger.
Pain.
Because deep down, he already knew.
“Then why me?”” I asked.
Rachel looked at me.
“Because you were the only thing standing between her and complete control.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“My dad?””
“No.””
She looked at the hallway.
“Lily.””
My blood ran cold.
“What about Lily?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Nicole wanted another child.””
My father frowned.
“She already had Lily.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
The room became silent.
“Lily was not part of her original plan.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel looked at my father.
“You need to tell Emma the truth about Lily.””
My father went pale.
“Rachel.””
“No more secrets, Marcus.””
I looked between them.
“What truth?””
My father stood.
“Emma…”
My voice became sharper.
“No.””
He stopped.
“Not again.””
His face fell.
“I’m tired of everyone protecting me from the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Finally, my father sat back down.
And then he said something I never expected.
“Lily isn’t Nicole’s biological daughter.””
The room disappeared.
I heard the words.
But they didn’t make sense.
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“She was adopted.””
I stared.
“Then why did you never tell me?””
“Because Nicole asked me not to.””
“Why?””
He looked at Rachel.
Rachel answered.
“Because Lily was supposed to be the child who replaced you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Rachel’s expression softened.
“Nicole wanted your father to have a fresh start. A new family.””
I looked at the hallway where Lily’s room was.
My little sister.
The girl who protected me.
The girl who told the truth.
“She didn’t know?””
“No.””
Rachel shook her head.
“Lily loves you because she sees you as her sister.””
A strange feeling filled my chest.
Anger.
Sadness.
Relief.
All at once.
My father covered his face.
“I thought I was protecting everyone.””
“You were protecting a lie,” Rachel said gently.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another unknown number.
A photo had been sent.
I opened it.
My hands began shaking.
It was a picture of Nicole.
Standing outside a building.
With someone else.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who should not have been there.
