Chapter 12: The Night Everything Changed

I couldn’t understand what I was reading.

The words were there.

Clear.

Impossible.

*She was not alone.*

*Marcus Carter was with her.*

My father.

My father.

The man who held my hand when I cried.

The man who told me he would always protect me.

The man who had spent the last few days looking devastated by Nicole’s lies.

My father.

Rachel looked at him.

“Marcus?””

He didn’t answer.

“Tell us this isn’t true.””

Still nothing.

That silence destroyed me.

I stepped back.

“Dad.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

He looked broken.

“I can explain.””

I laughed.

A painful, empty sound.

“Everyone says that.””

I looked at the letter.

“Nicole says that.””

My father stood.

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not this time.””

Lily started crying quietly.

“Emma…”

I looked at her.

Then at my father.

“Was he there?””

My father closed his eyes.

And that was the answer.

My chest felt tight.

“You were there the night Mom died.””

“Yes.””

The word came out like a whisper.

The room changed.

Everything changed.

“Why?””

My father sat down.

“I went to see Nicole.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother asked me to.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She knew something was wrong.””

Rachel looked confused.

“Then why did you go to Nicole?””

My father’s hands shook.

“Because Nicole contacted me.””

He looked at the letter.

“She said she had proof about Thomas.””

The same name.

The same person.

The center of everything.

“She told me she wanted to explain.””

I stared.

“And you believed her?””

“I thought I could fix it.””

My anger rose.

“You always think you can fix everything.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“What happened?””

My father swallowed.

“When I arrived, Nicole and your mother were arguing.””

My heart stopped.

“They were both alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

He closed his eyes.

“I heard a crash.””

Nobody moved.

“I ran inside.””

His voice broke.

“Your mother was on the floor.””

I covered my mouth.

“What did you do?””

“I called emergency services.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked at me.

“Because Nicole begged me.””

I felt sick.

“Begged you?””

“She said if people knew she was there, everyone would blame her.””

Rachel stared at him.

“And you listened?””

“I was terrified.””

My father’s voice cracked.

“I had just lost my wife.””

I looked away.

Because I understood grief.

But I also understood betrayal.

“You protected her.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because I thought she was innocent.””

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Did you tell the police she was there?””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

“Did you tell Emma?””

“No.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Then Nicole had leverage over you.””

My father looked down.

“She knew I hid the truth.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from Nicole.

*Now you know why your father can never leave me.*

My blood ran cold.

A second message appeared.

*He chose me over your mother.*

Then a third.

*Ask him what he found beside the body.*

I looked at my father.

“What did you find?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

His face changed.

Like he had been avoiding this moment for years.

“There was a piece of paper.””

My heart raced.

“What paper?””

He looked at the notebook.

“It had your mother’s handwriting.””

“What did it say?””

My father’s voice dropped.

“It said…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“It said Nicole was not the person who hurt her.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

My father looked at me.

“She wrote Nicole was trying to save her.””

The room went silent.

A new possibility opened.

One that changed everything.

Nicole had lied.

My father had lied.

But maybe the truth was even more complicated.

Daniel took the letter from my hand.

“Then we need to find that paper.””

Rachel looked toward the hidden files.

“And we need to find out who wrote this letter.””

I looked at the page again.

The accusation against my father.

The handwriting I didn’t recognize.

The missing pieces.

Someone wanted us to believe my father was guilty.

Someone wanted us fighting each other.

Then my phone received one final message.

A picture appeared.

A picture of the person who had written the letter.

And underneath it were four words.

May you like

*Ask her why she lied.*

The person in the picture was Rachel.
