Chapter 2: The Recording She Never Expected
The recording lasted only twelve seconds.
But those twelve seconds destroyed three years of pretending.
Nicole’s voice came through my phone speaker.
“Just tell Dad Emma did it. She always gets away with everything.””
A pause.
Then Lily’s frightened voice.
“But Emma didn’t break it.””
Nicole answered immediately.
“She needs to learn a lesson.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
The rain outside continued falling, but inside the kitchen, everything felt frozen.
My father stared at Nicole.
Not with anger.
Not yet.
With confusion.
Like his mind was trying to force two completely different versions of reality to exist at the same time.
Nicole looked at Lily.
Then at the phone.
Then at me.
“You recorded me?””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“You borrowed Emma’s phone because mine was charging.””
I looked at Lily.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
My little sister, the same girl who used to ask me to check under her bed for monsters, had been brave enough to stand against her own mother.
Nicole’s face hardened.
“Lily, you don’t understand what you’re doing.””
“Yes, I do.””
Everyone looked at her.
Even Lily seemed surprised by her own courage.
She wiped her eyes.
“You’re blaming Emma for things she doesn’t do.””
Nicole’s mouth opened.
Closed.
Opened again.
“Marcus, she’s confused.””
My father finally spoke.
“Confused?””
His voice was quiet.
That was worse than yelling.
“Did you hit her?””
Nicole looked away for half a second.
That was all it took.
I saw my father notice.
“No,” she whispered.
But it was too late.
He had seen the answer before she gave it.
“I asked you a question, Nicole.””
She crossed her arms.
“She was disrespectful.””
My heart sank.
Not an apology.
Not regret.
An excuse.
“She raised her voice at me.””
My father looked at my cheek again.
“Your solution was to hit her?””
“She pushed me.””
I immediately looked up.
“What?””
Nicole pointed at me.
“She was angry. She got in my face.””
“I never touched you!””
“Emma.””
My father’s warning tone stopped me.
And that hurt more than I expected.
Because even now, even with the recording, there was still a part of him searching for a reason I could be wrong.
I stepped back.
“Dad, listen to me.””
“I am listening.””
“No, you’re hearing.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
His expression changed.
“I’m trying to understand.””
“I understand.””
I looked at Nicole.
“She wanted you to believe I was the problem.””
Nicole scoffed.
“This is ridiculous.””
“No,” Lily said.
Everyone turned.
My little sister looked terrified, but she kept going.
“She broke my tablet.””
Nicole’s face went pale.
“What?””
Lily nodded slowly.
“I dropped it.””
The silence became heavier.
My father stared at her.
“You dropped it?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let your mother blame Emma?””
Lily looked down.
“Because Mom told me not to say anything.””
Nicole immediately stepped forward.
“Lily!””
But Lily continued.
“She said Emma needed to stop thinking she could do whatever she wanted.””
My father’s face changed.
The anger finally arrived.
“Nicole.””
She shook her head.
“No, no. This is being taken out of context.””
I almost laughed.
Out of context.
That was what people said when the truth was inconvenient.
Nicole walked toward Lily.
“Sweetheart, you know I love you.””
Lily stepped back.
That tiny movement broke something inside me.
Because children don’t step away from people they feel safe with.
My father noticed too.
“Don’t.””
Nicole stopped.
“Marcus—”
“Don’t go near her right now.””
The kitchen became silent again.
Nicole looked at him like she couldn’t believe he had chosen someone else.
Even if that someone else was his own daughter.
“I can’t believe you’re doing this to me.””
My father stared.
“Doing what?””
“Taking their side.””
Their side.
I heard the words clearly.
Not my side.
Not Lily’s side.
Their side.
Like we were enemies.
My father rubbed his forehead.
“I need some time.””
Nicole laughed bitterly.
“Of course you do.””
She grabbed her purse from the counter.
“I’m leaving.””
Nobody stopped her.
Not even my father.
At the doorway, she paused.
Then looked directly at me.
The kindness was gone.
“You think you won?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew something she didn’t.
This wasn’t about winning.
It was about finally being heard.
She looked at Lily.
“And you’ll regret this.””
My stomach tightened.
“Nicole.””
My father’s voice was sharp.
She ignored him.
Then she walked out.
The front door slammed.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Then Lily whispered:
“Emma?””
I turned around.
She was crying.
“I’m sorry.””
My anger disappeared instantly.
I knelt down and hugged her.
“You did the right thing.””
“But she’s my mom.””
“I know.””
“I didn’t want to hurt her.””
I held her tighter.
“You told the truth. That’s not hurting someone.””
My father watched us quietly.
Later that night, after Lily went to bed, I sat alone in my room.
My cheek still hurt.
But the pain wasn’t the worst part.
The worst part was realizing how close I had come to accepting a lie because it came from someone who was supposed to love me.
My father knocked on my door.
“Can I come in?””
I looked up.
“Sure.””
He sat on the edge of my bed.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
“I’m sorry.””
Two words.
Simple.
But I had waited years to hear them.
“I should have noticed.””
I looked away.
“Yeah.””
He swallowed.
“I thought if I kept everyone happy, things would work out.””
“Did they?””
“No.””
The honesty surprised me.
He reached into his pocket.
“I found something.””
He placed an envelope on my desk.
I frowned.
“What is that?””
“I found it in Nicole’s office.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What’s inside?””
My father looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“Then why are you giving it to me?””
“Because your name is written on it.””
I stared at the envelope.
My name.
Emma Carter.
Written in Nicole’s handwriting.
I slowly reached for it.
May you like
But before I opened it, my father said something that made my blood run cold.
“Emma… I think Nicole has been hiding something from all of us.””
