Chapter 13: The Friend Who Hid The Truth

The picture on my phone was impossible.

I stared at it until my eyes burned.

Rachel.

The woman who had spent days helping us uncover Nicole’s lies.

The woman who claimed she wanted justice for my mother.

The woman who said she had been protecting our family.

She was the one who wrote the letter.

She was the one who accused my father.

My hand started shaking.

Nobody noticed at first.

Everyone was still focused on my father.

On the confession.

On the years of secrets.

Then Rachel saw my face.

“What happened?””

I slowly turned my phone toward her.

The second she saw the picture, the color disappeared from her face.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

My father stood.

“What is it?””

I didn’t answer.

I just handed him the phone.

He looked at the image.

Then at Rachel.

“Is this true?””

Rachel didn’t speak.

That was the answer.

My father stepped back.

“Rachel.””

“I can explain.””

I laughed quietly.

The sound was bitter.

“Everyone can explain.””

Rachel looked at me.

“Emma, please.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t get to say please.””

She looked devastated.

But I couldn’t care.

Not anymore.

I was tired of people hurting us and then asking us to understand.

My father’s voice was cold.

“Did you write that letter?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Lily moved closer to me.

Like she was afraid something else would break.

“Why?”” my father asked.

Rachel looked down.

“Because I thought it was the only way.””

“The only way to do what?””

“To stop Nicole.””

My father shook his head.

“You almost destroyed me.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice rose.

“You made Emma think I killed her mother.””

Rachel looked at me.

“I never wanted that.””

“But you wrote it.””

She had no answer.

I walked toward her.

“Why would you do that?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was angry.””

“At who?””

She looked at the photograph of my mother.

“At everyone.””

The confession shocked me.

She sat down slowly.

“I spent years blaming myself.””

“For what?””

Rachel swallowed.

“When your mother died, I knew Nicole was involved.””

My father frowned.

“You said she was innocent.””

“I said she wasn’t the person who caused it.””

The distinction made my stomach twist.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked at me.

“It means I knew there was someone else.””

My father froze.

“Who?””

Rachel looked away.

“Thomas Carter.””

My grandfather.

Again.

The same name.

The same shadow.

Rachel continued.

“Your mother found proof that Thomas had been manipulating Nicole for years.””

My father frowned.

“But he was already dead.””

“Yes.””

“So how could he be responsible?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because Nicole was still controlled by him even after his death.””

I thought about it.

The anger.

The revenge.

The obsession.

Nicole had spent years trying to punish the wrong people.

“She blamed my mother.””

“Yes.””

“But my mother was trying to help her.””

Rachel nodded.

“She was.””

“Then why did Nicole hurt her?””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“Because Thomas made Nicole believe your mother betrayed her.””

My father looked exhausted.

“So the night she died…”

Rachel nodded.

“Nicole came there to confront her.””

My heart tightened.

“And what happened?””

Rachel looked at the floor.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know something.””

“Yes.””

She took a deep breath.

“Your mother called me that night.””

Nobody moved.

“She told me Nicole was there.””

My father looked shocked.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because five minutes later, I received another call.””

“From who?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Nicole.””

Silence.

“She said your mother was hurt.””

My father stepped forward.

“What?””

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“She told me to come quickly.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

My heart stopped.

“You were there too?””

Rachel nodded.

“When I arrived, Marcus was already there.””

My father closed his eyes.

“And Nicole?””

“She was gone.””

I felt dizzy.

Three people.

One night.

One death.

One missing truth.

“Why did you write the letter?”” I asked again.

Rachel looked at me.

“Because I believed your father was hiding something.””

“He was.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“But I didn’t know he was protecting Nicole because he thought she was innocent.””

My father looked away.

“So you decided to make us hate each other.””

“I was wrong.””

The honesty hurt more than an excuse.

Rachel reached into her bag.

“I have something else.””

She pulled out a small recorder.

My father stared.

“What is that?””

“The last thing your mother left me.””

She pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“Rachel, if you’re hearing this, something happened.””

My breath caught.

My mother continued.

“Please don’t blame Nicole.””

Everyone froze.

Rachel looked down.

“She knew.””

My mother’s voice continued.

“She was manipulated. She is angry, but she is not evil.””

I looked at my father.

The recording continued.

“Marcus will try to protect everyone. He always does. But he needs to know the truth.””

A pause.

Then:

“Thomas was never finished destroying us.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

One final message.

From Nicole.

*Now you know the truth. Come alone if you want the rest.*

Below it was an address.

May you like

And a time.

Tonight.
