Chapter 8: The Secret Behind the Empty Bank Box
Adrian read the message three times.
Each time, it became harder to breathe.
*Ask Robert who he called after Claire stopped breathing.*
The phone felt heavier in his hand.
The room felt smaller.
Every answer he had spent years searching for seemed to lead back to the same place.
His father.
Robert stood completely still.
He looked like a man who had just watched the last door out of a burning building disappear.
“Adrian…”
The sound of his name made Adrian look up.
“Who did you call?””
Robert didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
His father looked down.
“Who did you call?””
Daniel slowly stepped away from the table.
He understood before anyone else.
“You never told me that part.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Daniel…”
“You told me Claire was gone.””
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“You told me you found her unconscious.””
Adrian turned toward him.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel looked at Robert.
“Robert didn’t tell me everything either.””
The room became silent again.
Adrian felt exhausted.
Everyone had a hidden piece.
Everyone knew a different version of the truth.
And he was the only one who had lived inside the lie.
“Start from the beginning,” Adrian said.
Robert looked at him.
“I was with Claire.””
“I know.””
“When I arrived, she was sitting on the floor.””
“Was she hurt?””
“No.””
The answer surprised Adrian.
“No?””
Robert shook his head.
“She was weak. She was scared. But she wasn’t hurt.””
“Then why did you think something happened?””
“Because she told me something was wrong.””
“What?””
Robert’s voice dropped.
“She said someone had followed her.””
Adrian looked toward the stairs.
“Who?””
“She didn’t know.””
“Then what happened?””
Robert swallowed.
“She gave me the key.””
Adrian looked down at the small key in his hand.
“She gave you this?””
“Yes.””
“Then why was it inside Teddy?””
Robert looked confused.
“I don’t know.””
Adrian stared.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You had the key.””
“I did.””
“Then how did Claire put it inside the bear?””
Robert shook his head.
“She didn’t.””
The answer stopped him.
“What?””
Robert looked at the teddy bear.
“She must have hidden another copy.””
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“Another copy?””
Robert nodded.
“Claire was careful.””
Adrian remembered.
Yes.
She was.
Claire never trusted a single place.
She always made backups.
Always prepared.
But that created another question.
“If you had the key,” Adrian said, “why didn’t you open the box?””
Robert looked ashamed.
“Because Claire told me not to.””
“Again.””
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“Another promise.””
Robert accepted the anger.
“She said the box would only be opened when you had the full truth.””
“But someone opened it.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn walked into the room.
Lily was asleep upstairs.
Her face was pale.
“I know who.””
Everyone turned.
Adrian stared.
“What did you say?””
Evelyn slowly walked down the stairs.
“I know who opened the box.””
Robert looked alarmed.
“Evelyn.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“This has gone too far.””
Adrian watched her carefully.
“You’ve known this whole time.””
“I suspected.””
“That’s not the same.””
“No.””
She looked at the key.
“But I know now.””
“Who?””
Evelyn took a deep breath.
“Marcus Vale.””
Adrian froze.
“How?””
“Because he came to see me yesterday.””
The room exploded with tension.
“When?””
“After the teddy bear was damaged.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because he threatened me.””
Adrian stared.
“Threatened you with what?””
Evelyn looked at Robert.
Then at Daniel.
“Everything.””
She sat down.
“After Claire died, Marcus contacted me.””
“Why?””
“He thought Claire had given me the evidence.””
“Did she?””
“No.””
“Then why did he think that?””
“Because Claire trusted me enough to make him believe I had it.””
Adrian frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if you know Claire.””
Evelyn looked at the teddy bear.
“She knew Marcus watched everyone.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That sounds like her.””
Evelyn continued.
“She knew if she hid the evidence with me, he would come after me.””
“And?””
“She hid it somewhere else.””
“Teddy.””
“Yes.””
Adrian stared.
“Then why did you try to open it?””
Evelyn looked away.
“Because Marcus came to me.””
Her voice became quiet.
“He told me Claire left something behind.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“And you believed him?””
“I didn’t know what to believe.””
“You tore apart my daughter’s toy.””
“I thought I could find it before he did.””
“That doesn’t excuse it.””
“I know.””
For the first time, Evelyn didn’t defend herself.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised him.
Before he could respond, Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Adrian immediately noticed.
“What happened?””
Daniel answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then his face went pale.
“No.””
Everyone watched.
“Where?””
Silence.
Then Daniel hung up.
“The bank.””
Adrian stood.
“What about it?””
“The security system sent an alert.””
“What kind of alert?””
Daniel looked at the key.
“The box was opened using a copy.””
Adrian felt his stomach drop.
“But who has the other key?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Robert whispered:
“Claire only made two copies.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Who had the second one?””
Robert’s face changed.
And Adrian knew.
He knew before his father spoke.
“Me.””
The word landed heavily.
“You had both?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Claire gave me one.””
“And the other?””
Robert looked away.
“She gave it to someone else.””
“Who?””
Robert’s eyes moved toward Evelyn.
“No.””
Adrian turned.
Evelyn looked shocked.
“I never had the key.””
Robert shook his head.
“Not you.””
Everyone froze.
“Then who?””
Robert slowly said:
“The person Claire trusted most after you.””
Adrian’s mind raced.
His mother?
No.
Daniel?
No.
Then he remembered the photograph.
Claire outside the building.
Someone beside her.
Someone he hadn’t recognized at first.
Because the person wasn’t standing beside her as a friend.
They were standing beside her as family.
Adrian looked at Robert.
“Who was it?””
Robert’s voice was almost a whisper.
“Your brother.””
Adrian went completely still.
“My brother is dead.””
Robert nodded.
“I know.””
The room became silent.
“Then how could he have the key?””
Robert looked toward the empty hallway.
“Because he wasn’t the person who took it.””
A cold feeling moved through Adrian.
“What are you saying?””
Robert looked terrified.
“The person who had your brother’s key…”
He paused.
“…was the person who caused his death.””
Adrian stared.
His brother had died years before Claire.
A car accident.
That was what everyone said.
A tragedy.
An accident.
But now everything was changing.
“Dad.””
Robert looked at him.
“Was my brother murdered?””
Robert didn’t answer.
And that silence was enough.
Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.
Everyone turned.
Then Lily’s voice came from the staircase.
“Daddy?””
Adrian’s heart dropped.
She was awake.
She had heard everything.
He rushed toward her.
“Lily.””
She looked frightened.
“I heard Mommy’s name.””
He knelt.
“It’s okay.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It’s not.””
She held Teddy close.
“Because Mommy told me something.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
Lily looked at the adults.
Then whispered:
“Mommy said if everyone started blaming each other…”
She looked at her father.
“I should give you the last thing she left me.””
Adrian slowly stood.
“What thing?””
Lily reached inside Teddy.
Not the heart.
Not the side.
The ear.
She pulled something out.
A tiny folded piece of paper.
Adrian unfolded it.
Only one sentence was written.
But this time, it wasn’t Claire’s handwriting.
It was someone else’s.
*I saw what happened the night Claire died.*
Adrian looked at the signature below.
May you like
And his blood turned cold.
Because the name belonged to someone who was supposed to have been dead for years.
