Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Adrian didn’t sleep that night.

He sat in the darkness of his office long after Lily had fallen asleep, staring at the broken teddy bear sitting on the desk.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Every sound felt different now.

The ticking clock on the wall.

The creak of the wooden floors.

The distant hum of the refrigerator.

All the ordinary noises of his home suddenly felt like warnings.

Because someone had entered his office.

Someone had left a message.

Someone knew what was inside the bear.

And that person was close enough to watch him.

Adrian looked at the USB drive again.

A small piece of plastic.

Something so ordinary.

Yet it had already changed everything he believed about the last three years.

He thought Claire’s death had been tragic.

Unexpected.

Unfair.

But simple.

Now he wasn’t sure.

His wife had left him a warning.

And she had named Evelyn.

The woman sleeping under his roof.

The woman who helped raise his daughter.

The woman who had just tried to destroy the one thing Claire left behind.

A soft knock came from the door.

Adrian immediately closed the laptop.

“Daddy?””

His shoulders relaxed.

It was Lily.

He opened the door.

She stood there holding Teddy against her chest.

Even damaged, she refused to let him go.

“I can’t sleep.””

Adrian crouched down.

“Nightmares?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at him carefully.

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

The question surprised him.

“What?””

“Because she hid something.””

Adrian’s heart tightened.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Then why do you look sad?””

Because your mother was trying to protect us.

Because I don’t know who hurt her.

Because I should have seen it.

But he couldn’t say those things.

Not to a child.

He touched her hair gently.

“Sometimes adults keep secrets because they’re scared.””

Lily looked at Teddy.

“Was Mommy scared?””

Adrian looked at the bear.

Then at his daughter.

“Yes.””

The answer came out before he could stop it.

Lily hugged the toy tighter.

“Did she think you couldn’t protect us?””

That question hurt more than anything.

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

“I will always protect you.””

A voice interrupted from the hallway.

“That’s a beautiful promise.””

Adrian looked up.

Evelyn stood there.

Watching them.

Her face was calm.

Almost too calm.

“Why are you awake?”” Adrian asked.

She leaned against the doorframe.

“I heard voices.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes moved to the teddy bear.

For a second, fear crossed her face again.

Adrian noticed.

“You’re afraid of a stuffed animal.””

“I’m afraid of what people might do because of what’s hidden inside it.””

“Funny.””

“What?””

“You keep saying you don’t know what’s there.””

Evelyn said nothing.

Adrian stood.

“Unless you do.””

Her expression hardened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re letting grief make you suspicious.””

“My wife left a video saying you were hiding evidence.””

Evelyn froze.

Only for a second.

But Adrian saw it.

“You watched it?””

“No.””

“You know what Claire said.””

“I know what Claire was like.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Evelyn looked toward Lily.

“Not here.””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“Then tomorrow.””

She nodded.

“Tomorrow.””

But the way she said it didn’t sound like agreement.

It sounded like preparation.

The next morning, Adrian woke up before sunrise.

He checked the office first.

The door was still locked.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

But when he opened his laptop, the USB was missing.

His stomach dropped.

“No.””

He searched the desk.

The drawers.

The floor.

Nothing.

Someone had taken it.

He turned around.

The office door was still locked.

His blood ran cold.

Because there was only one way someone could have entered.

He walked downstairs quickly.

The house was already awake.

Evelyn sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee.

Robert was reading the newspaper.

Lily was eating cereal.

Everything looked normal.

That made it worse.

“Where is it?”” Adrian asked.

Evelyn looked up.

“Where is what?””

“The USB.””

Her hand stopped.

Robert noticed.

“What USB?””

Adrian stared at Evelyn.

“The one that came out of Lily’s bear.””

Evelyn slowly placed her coffee cup down.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Someone took it from my office.””

She looked genuinely surprised.

“Then maybe someone else found it.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“You’re the only person who knew.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Robert.

“Not the only person.””

The room became quiet.

Adrian turned.

“What does that mean?””

Robert lowered the newspaper.

“I think we need to talk.””

Adrian looked between them.

“How long have you known?””

Robert sighed.

“Known what?””

“About Claire.””

The older man looked away.

That was enough.

Adrian felt something break inside him.

“My own father knew?””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew something.””

Robert slowly stood.

“I knew Claire was worried.””

“About what?””

He hesitated.

“About people around her.””

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Robert’s face tightened.

“Claire asked me not to.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought telling you would put you in danger.””

The words hit like a punch.

Adrian laughed once.

A bitter, empty sound.

“She thought I was in danger?””

Robert nodded.

“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to protect you and Lily.””

“And what did you do?””

Robert looked ashamed.

“I failed.””

Lily looked up from her cereal.

“Grandpa?””

Robert immediately softened.

“Nothing, sweetheart.””

But Adrian couldn’t ignore it.

“How long?””

Robert was quiet.

“Three months before Claire died.””

Adrian stared at him.

Three months.

His wife had been afraid.

She had been preparing.

And he never knew.

“What did she find?””

Robert looked at Evelyn.

And Evelyn looked back.

A silent conversation passed between them.

Adrian saw it.

“You two.””

Evelyn stood.

“Adrian—”

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“You both knew.””

“Not the same things.””

“Then explain.””

Nobody spoke.

The silence became unbearable.

Finally, Robert said:

“Claire believed someone was using the family business to hide illegal transfers.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“She found documents.””

“Where?””

Robert looked toward the stairs.

“She kept copies.””

Adrian followed his gaze.

“Where?””

Robert swallowed.

“She said the original evidence was too dangerous to keep in the house.””

Adrian remembered the teddy bear.

No.

Not the bear.

Claire had hidden something.

Something she trusted Lily to keep safe.

A toy.

Because nobody would suspect a child’s toy.

Adrian turned to Evelyn.

“You knew about the documents.””

Her face changed.

“I knew Claire was looking into something.””

“And?””

“And I tried to stop her.””

The admission shocked everyone.

Robert looked at her.

“Evelyn.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t mean for anything to happen.””

Adrian went still.

The words sounded wrong.

Dangerously wrong.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at him.

For the first time, she looked less like a confident woman in control.

And more like someone trapped.

“Claire was going to expose everything.””

“What everything?””

She didn’t answer.

“Evelyn.””

Her voice became quiet.

“Your family’s company wasn’t as clean as you thought.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

“It’s true.””

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

She walked to the counter and opened a drawer.

She pulled out a folder.

Then placed it on the table.

“I found this after Claire died.””

Adrian looked at the folder.

His name was written on it.

Not the company name.

Not Evelyn’s.

His.

He slowly opened it.

Inside were copies of financial records.

Transfer documents.

And one photograph.

A photograph of Claire standing outside a building.

With someone Adrian recognized.

Someone he never expected.

His hands started shaking.

Because behind Claire stood the person who had helped her uncover the truth.

And underneath the photo was a handwritten note.

Three words.

*Trust no one.*

Adrian looked up.

“Where did you get this?””

Evelyn’s face turned pale.

“Claire gave it to me.””

The room went silent.

Adrian stared at her.

“Why would Claire give you evidence against yourself?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Then Lily screamed from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

A moment later, a loud crash came from her bedroom.

Adrian ran.

The others followed.

When he reached the doorway, he stopped.

The room had been searched.

Drawers were open.

Clothes were thrown everywhere.

And sitting on Lily’s bed was Teddy.

But the bear was no longer torn.

Someone had stitched it back together.

Adrian stepped closer.

Then he noticed something tucked beneath the bear’s paw.

A new note.

He picked it up.

Only one sentence was written.

*Claire trusted the wrong person.*

Adrian slowly turned around.

Because standing behind him was Evelyn.

And for the first time…

May you like

he wondered if the note was a warning about her.

Or from her.
