Chapter 2: The Message Hidden in the Bear

Adrian didn’t remember ending the phone call.

One moment, he was standing in the middle of the living room, holding a broken teddy bear and a small USB drive that had somehow survived years hidden inside its torn fabric.

The next moment, the call was gone.

The house was silent.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

Silent in the way a room becomes silent after someone says something that changes everything.

Lily stood beside the couch, tears still running down her cheeks. She looked at the ripped teddy bear in her father’s hands, and Adrian could see the question in her eyes.

Was Teddy ruined forever?

He walked toward her slowly.

“Lily.””

She looked up.

“Is Mommy really inside him?””

The question hit harder than anything else that night.

Adrian knelt down in front of his daughter.

“No, sweetheart.””

He gently touched the bear’s damaged side.

“Your mom isn’t inside Teddy.””

“Then why was something hidden there?””

Adrian looked at the USB.

Because he didn’t know how to explain it.

Because he didn’t know if the truth would hurt her more than the secret itself.

“Sometimes,” he said quietly, “people leave things behind because they want someone to find them when the time is right.””

Lily looked at the bear.

“Did Mommy know this would happen?””

Adrian swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

But someone in the room did.

Evelyn.

She had moved away from the others and was standing near the window, pretending to look outside.

But Adrian noticed her hands.

They were shaking.

“Evelyn.””

She turned.

“What?””

“Why are you afraid of this?””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

She forced a laugh.

“You’re imagining things.””

“No.””

Adrian held up the USB.

“I’ve known you for five years. I know when you’re lying.””

The expression on Evelyn’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

His father, Robert, finally spoke from the dining table.

“Adrian.””

Everyone looked at him.

The older man had barely said a word all evening. He was usually the person who avoided conflict, the person who believed every problem could disappear if people simply stopped talking about it.

But now his face looked troubled.

“Maybe you should find out what’s on that thing.””

Evelyn immediately turned toward him.

“Robert, don’t.””

The room froze.

Adrian noticed it.

That one sentence.

That one reaction.

“You knew something.””

Evelyn’s eyes widened.

“No.””

“You told him not to.””

“I was just saying we shouldn’t jump to conclusions.””

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Adrian looked around the room.

At his father.

At Evelyn.

At the broken bear.

Suddenly, the past few years felt different.

Like pieces of a puzzle he never realized he was missing.

Claire had always been careful.

That was what everyone loved about her.

She remembered birthdays months in advance. She kept copies of important documents. She wrote notes for everything.

Even when she was sick, she organized the house like she was preparing for a future she might not be part of.

Adrian remembered one night near the end.

Claire had been sitting on their bedroom floor, sewing something.

The teddy bear.

He had asked her what she was doing.

She smiled and covered it with her hand.

“Just fixing something important.””

He had laughed.

“It’s a stuffed bear, Claire.””

She looked at him strangely.

“No, Adrian. It’s more than that.””

At the time, he thought she was just being sentimental.

Now he wasn’t sure.

“Where is the laptop?”” Adrian asked.

Evelyn immediately answered.

“Don’t.””

That was the second mistake.

Adrian turned toward her.

“Don’t what?””

She looked away.

“You don’t know what you’re opening.””

He stared at her.

“That sounds like a warning.””

“It is.””

“From you?””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised him.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Adrian walked toward his office.

Lily followed.

“Daddy?””

He looked back.

“Yes?””

“Can Teddy come?””

His heart broke.

Even now, after everything, she was worried about the bear.

He nodded.

“Of course.””

She carefully picked up Teddy from the floor.

The torn side exposed loose stuffing where the USB had been hidden.

She held him gently, as if he was injured.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered to the bear.

Adrian almost couldn’t breathe.

A child apologizing to a toy because an adult had hurt something she loved.

He walked faster.

Inside his office, he closed the door.

Only he and Lily were there.

He connected the USB to his laptop.

Nothing happened for several seconds.

Then a folder appeared.

One folder.

No password.

No instructions.

Just a name.

*FOR ADRIAN — WHEN YOU FINALLY KNOW THE TRUTH*

Adrian stared at the screen.

His hands went cold.

Lily climbed onto the chair beside him.

“Is that from Mommy?””

He nodded slowly.

“I think so.””

He clicked the folder.

Inside were three files.

A video.

A document.

And several photographs.

The first file was the video.

Adrian hesitated.

Part of him wanted to close the laptop.

To protect himself.

To protect Lily.

But another part knew he had spent three years living inside someone else’s version of the truth.

He pressed play.

The screen went black.

Then Claire appeared.

Adrian stopped breathing.

It wasn’t a memory.

It wasn’t an old family recording.

It was a message.

Claire was sitting in their bedroom.

The same room where she had spent her final months.

She looked tired.

But she was smiling.

“Adrian,” she said softly.

His eyes immediately filled with tears.

Lily whispered, “Mommy.””

The recording continued.

“If you’re watching this, it means Lily still has Teddy.””

Adrian looked down at the bear.

Claire smiled sadly.

“I know you probably think I’m being dramatic. You always told me I worried too much.””

For a second, Adrian almost laughed.

Because she was right.

That was exactly what he would have said.

But then Claire’s expression changed.

“However, if this message is being viewed, something happened that I was afraid of.””

Adrian leaned closer.

“What happened?””

The video continued.

“I need you to listen carefully. There are things I never told you because I was trying to protect Lily.””

A cold feeling moved through Adrian.

“Protect her from what?””

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“From Evelyn.””

The room became completely still.

Behind Adrian, the office door handle moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

Adrian turned.

“Evelyn?””

No answer.

The handle stopped.

He quickly stood and opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

But on the floor was a piece of paper.

He picked it up.

Three words were written on it.

*Stop watching this.*

Adrian’s heart raced.

Someone had been listening.

Someone knew.

He closed the door and locked it.

Then he returned to the laptop.

The video was still playing.

Claire’s voice filled the room.

“Adrian, I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you everything.””

She paused.

“I found out Evelyn wasn’t just keeping secrets.””

Adrian stared at the screen.

“She was hiding evidence.””

The video flickered.

Claire looked nervous now.

Like she was afraid someone might walk in.

“She has been changing documents. Moving money. And she knows something about the night I…”

The recording suddenly glitched.

Adrian leaned closer.

“Claire?””

Her voice became distorted.

Then the screen went black.

A message appeared.

*FILE CORRUPTED.*

Adrian stared.

“No.””

He clicked again.

Nothing.

The video was gone.

Lily looked frightened.

“Daddy, what did Mommy say?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because he had heard enough.

Evelyn had been hiding something.

But he didn’t know what.

And worse…

Someone had damaged the video before Claire could finish.

He looked at the other files.

The document.

The photographs.

Before he could open them, his phone buzzed.

A text message.

From an unknown number.

He opened it.

His blood ran cold.

*If you want to know what Claire discovered, come alone.*

A second message appeared.

*Because the person who destroyed the video is already inside your house.*

Adrian slowly looked toward the locked office door.

Then toward Lily.

May you like

Then toward the hallway.

And for the first time in years, he wondered if the person he trusted most had been standing beside him all along.
