Chapter 7: The Last Conversation Claire Ever Had
Adrian couldn’t hear anything after those words.
Not the clock.
Not the wind outside.
Not even Lily asking quietly why everyone looked scared.
Everything disappeared into one sentence.
*She died knowing exactly who betrayed her.*
He stared at his father.
The man who taught him how to ride a bicycle.
The man who held him after his first heartbreak.
The man who stood beside him at Claire’s funeral and told him, “We’ll get through this together.””
Now that same man was standing in front of him, carrying a secret that had followed them for three years.
“Dad.””
Adrian’s voice was barely recognizable.
“Who?””
Robert looked down.
That was the answer Adrian feared most.
Not anger.
Not denial.
Silence.
“Who betrayed her?””
Robert closed his eyes.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped back.
“You don’t get to explain first.””
His voice grew louder.
“You get to answer.””
Lily flinched.
Adrian immediately lowered his voice.
But the anger remained.
“Who betrayed my wife?””
Robert looked toward Lily.
Then toward the others.
“I don’t want to do this in front of her.””
“Then we should have done it three years ago.””
The words cut deep.
Robert looked like an older man suddenly.
Not the strong father Adrian remembered.
Just someone exhausted from carrying something too heavy.
“Take Lily upstairs,” Adrian told Evelyn.
Everyone looked surprised.
Even Evelyn.
“Why me?””
“Because right now, you’re the only person I’m not sure about.””
Her face tightened.
But she nodded.
“Come on, Lily.””
The little girl looked at her father.
“Are you okay?””
Adrian forced a smile.
“I’m okay.””
It was the same lie adults always told children.
Lily didn’t believe it.
But she followed Evelyn upstairs.
When they disappeared, Adrian turned back.
“Now.””
Robert sat down slowly.
Daniel remained standing near the table, watching him.
“You knew this moment would come,” Adrian said.
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you still waited.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Robert looked at the floor.
“Because Claire made me promise.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Another promise.””
“Yes.””
“You all keep using Claire’s name like it excuses everything.””
Robert looked up.
“It doesn’t.””
“Then tell me.””
A long silence.
Then Robert began.
“The night Claire died…”
Adrian froze.
Robert continued.
“She called me.””
“Why?””
“Because she found something.””
“What?””
Robert looked at Daniel.
Daniel gave a small nod.
“Tell him.””
Robert took a breath.
“She found proof that Marcus wasn’t acting alone.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What?””
“Marcus had someone helping him.””
“Who?””
Robert looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Adrian slammed his hand against the table.
“You don’t know?””
“I never saw the name.””
“Then what did you see?””
Robert’s voice dropped.
“A document.””
“What document?””
“A transfer agreement.””
Adrian stared.
“Between who?””
Robert hesitated.
Then:
“Between Marcus and someone inside our family.””
The room went cold.
“Who?””
Robert didn’t answer.
Adrian walked closer.
“Dad.””
Robert’s eyes filled with regret.
“Claire knew.””
“Knew what?””
“She knew who it was.””
“Then why didn’t she tell you?””
“She did.””
Adrian stopped.
“What?””
Robert looked at him.
“She told me.””
“Who?””
Robert swallowed.
“She said if anything happened to her, I needed to protect you.””
“From who?””
Robert looked toward the stairs.
Then back at Adrian.
“From the person she believed would come after the evidence.””
Adrian’s heart pounded.
“Who?””
Robert whispered:
“She never said.””
The answer made Adrian furious.
“You’re telling me she knew someone was dangerous and still didn’t tell you?””
“She didn’t trust that I was safe.””
“Why?””
Robert looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
“Because Claire suspected the person involved had access to everyone’s information.””
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means they knew things before they happened.””
Daniel opened the folder.
“Claire found messages that proved someone was monitoring her.””
Adrian looked at the documents.
“Monitoring?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“We don’t know.””
Adrian stared at the pages.
Then he noticed something.
A date.
The same date Claire had gone to the hospital for the final time.
His stomach dropped.
“What happened that night?””
Robert became still.
Adrian looked at him.
“You were with her.””
“Yes.””
“Tell me everything.””
Robert looked like he wanted to disappear.
But finally, he spoke.
“Claire called me around midnight.””
“Why?””
“She said she was scared.””
“Of what?””
“She said someone had been in the house.””
Adrian felt a chill.
“In our house?””
Robert nodded.
“She found her documents moved.””
“Which documents?””
“The ones she was hiding.””
Adrian looked toward the teddy bear.
“The ones in Teddy.””
“Yes.””
“Someone searched for them.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Robert looked broken.
“I wanted to.””
“But?””
“But Claire begged me not to.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Again.
Another secret.
Another person deciding he couldn’t handle the truth.
“What happened next?””
Robert continued.
“I drove to her.””
“Where was she?””
“At the old family property.””
Adrian frowned.
“Why there?””
“Because she needed somewhere private.””
“Then what?””
Robert’s hands shook.
“When I arrived, she already knew she didn’t have much time.””
Adrian went quiet.
“Did she tell you?””
“No.””
“Then how?””
“Because she was crying.””
Robert looked away.
“I had never seen Claire afraid before.””
Adrian remembered.
Claire was always strong.
Even during treatments.
Even when doctors gave bad news.
She smiled.
She fought.
She protected everyone else.
“So what did she say?””
Robert closed his eyes.
“She said she made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“She trusted someone.””
Adrian’s chest tightened.
“Who?””
“She wouldn’t say.””
“Why?””
“Because she thought I would confront them.””
“And?””
Robert looked at him.
“She knew I would.””
Adrian said nothing.
Because that was true.
His father was many things.
But he wasn’t someone who could watch evil happen quietly.
“What happened after that?””
Robert’s voice became softer.
“She gave me something.””
“What?””
“A message.””
“For me?””
Robert nodded.
“Where is it?””
Robert looked at Daniel.
Daniel reached into his briefcase.
“I have it.””
Adrian stared.
“You had it?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“Because Claire instructed me not to.””
Adrian’s anger returned.
“Of course.””
Daniel looked at him.
“She wanted you to find the truth yourself.””
“She wanted me to suffer?””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She wanted you to know who you could trust.””
Adrian looked at both men.
“And now?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Daniel handed him an envelope.
Adrian recognized the handwriting immediately.
Claire.
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Inside was one page.
Only a few sentences.
*Adrian,*
*If you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid.*
His vision blurred.
*I need you to understand something. I did not hide the truth because I stopped loving you. I hid it because I loved you enough to lose your trust temporarily rather than lose you forever.*
He swallowed.
The next line made his heart stop.
*The person who hurt me is someone you would never suspect.*
Adrian continued reading.
*But the person who can prove everything is someone you have already forgiven.*
He looked up.
Robert.
Daniel.
The entire room.
Someone he had already forgiven.
Someone from his past.
Then he read the final sentence.
And everything changed.
*Adrian, don’t open the bank box until you remember who was missing the night I died.*
He lowered the paper.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then his phone rang.
A message appeared.
A photograph.
Adrian opened it.
It showed the bank box.
Opened.
Empty.
His blood went cold.
A second message arrived.
*You’re too late.*
Then another.
*Your father already gave me the key.*
Adrian slowly looked at Robert.
The key was still in his own hand.
Robert looked terrified.
Because he knew something Adrian didn’t.
The final message appeared.
*Ask Robert who he called after Claire stopped breathing.*
And for the first time...
May you like
Adrian wondered if his father had been trying to protect him.
Or if he had been protecting himself.
