Chapter 4: The Truth Buried Beneath the Family Name

Adrian stared at the note until the words stopped looking like words.

*Claire trusted the wrong person.*

Six simple words.

But they felt heavier than the entire folder sitting in his hands.

Around him, everyone had gone silent.

Lily stood beside her bed, holding onto the edge of her blanket. Her eyes moved from her father to Evelyn, confused by the tension she was too young to understand.

Adrian immediately folded the note and placed it in his pocket.

Not because he wanted to hide the truth.

Because he wanted to protect his daughter from it.

“Lily,” he said softly, “go downstairs with Grandpa for a minute.””

“But Teddy—”

“I’ll take care of Teddy.””

She looked uncertain.

“You promise?””

Adrian looked at the damaged bear.

Then at his daughter.

“I promise.””

Robert walked toward her and held out his hand.

“Come on, sweetheart.””

Lily hesitated before finally taking it.

As they left, Adrian watched his father glance back at him.

There was guilt in his eyes.

A guilt that had been there for years.

When the bedroom door closed, Adrian turned.

“Start talking.””

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“About what?””

He almost laughed.

“Seriously?””

She looked away.

“The note?””

“The note. The folder. Claire. Everything.””

“You think I have all the answers.””

“No.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“I think you have more answers than you’re telling me.””

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she walked to the window.

“When Claire died, I thought everything was over.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She was investigating things she shouldn’t have been investigating.””

“Such as?””

Evelyn looked back at him.

“Your father’s company.””

Adrian felt anger rise.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

The question stopped him.

Because he realized something.

Everyone kept saying the same thing.

Claire was worried.

Claire found evidence.

Claire hid something.

But nobody had actually told him what she found.

“What exactly did she discover?”” Adrian asked.

Evelyn took a deep breath.

“Money was being moved through different accounts.””

“By who?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s convenient.””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“No. You’re telling me pieces.””

Her expression hardened.

“Because pieces are all I have.””

“Then why did Claire trust you?””

Evelyn looked down.

That question affected her.

“She didn’t.””

Adrian froze.

“What?””

“Claire didn’t trust me.””

“Then why did she give you the folder?””

“She didn’t.””

The room became quiet.

Adrian looked at the folder in his hand.

“Then why did you say she did?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“Because I wanted to know if you had found it.””

The answer was so unexpected that Adrian didn’t respond immediately.

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was scared.””

He stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“You don’t have to.””

She looked exhausted.

“But it’s true.””

Adrian walked toward the desk and placed the folder down.

“You need to understand something, Evelyn.””

She looked at him.

“I loved Claire.””

Her expression changed.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“You knew her. You lived with her. But you don’t know what she meant to me.””

Evelyn looked away.

“And now my daughter thinks her mother’s last gift is something people can destroy.””

A flash of shame crossed Evelyn’s face.

“I never meant to hurt Lily.””

“But you did.””

Silence.

Then Evelyn said something that made him stop.

“I was trying to save her.””

Adrian stared.

“What?””

“I was trying to save Lily.””

“By tearing apart her teddy bear?””

“By finding what was inside before someone else did.””

The room went cold.

“Someone else?””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because Claire knew.””

Adrian looked at the folder again.

“Tell me everything.””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she sat down.

And for the first time since he had known her, she looked afraid.

“Three years ago, Claire came to me.””

Adrian listened.

“She was sick. She knew her time was limited.””

His hands tightened.

“She told me she had discovered something about the company.””

“What?””

“She believed someone close to your family had been stealing money.””

“Someone close?””

“Yes.””

“Did she know who?””

Evelyn nodded.

“But she wouldn’t tell me.””

“Why?””

“Because she said knowing would put me at risk.””

Adrian frowned.

“Then why involve you?””

“Because she needed someone she thought nobody would suspect.””

The answer bothered him.

“Why you?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Because everyone hated me.””

Adrian said nothing.

It was true.

When Evelyn first entered his life after Claire’s death, his family never accepted her completely.

They thought she was replacing Claire.

They thought she moved too quickly into a grieving home.

They thought she had motives.

Maybe Claire had noticed that.

Maybe Claire thought the least trusted person would be the safest person.

“What else did she say?”” Adrian asked.

Evelyn’s fingers tightened around the edge of the chair.

“She told me there were documents.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe Claire gave you a mission but not the location?””

“She didn’t trust anyone with the location.””

“Not even you?””

“No.””

The honesty surprised him.

“She said if I knew too much, I could be forced to reveal it.””

Adrian thought about the USB.

The hidden video.

The warning.

The bear.

Claire had planned everything.

She had known someone might come looking.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would believe the wrong person.””

The words hung between them.

Before Adrian could respond, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

The same man from before.

Claire’s lawyer.

“Adrian.””

His voice was urgent.

“You found the folder.””

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“How do you know that?””

“Because Evelyn has it.””

“She doesn’t.””

A pause.

Then the lawyer said:

“Adrian, listen to me carefully. Do not trust Evelyn.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because Claire made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

The lawyer lowered his voice.

“She thought Evelyn was helping her.””

Adrian’s heart started beating faster.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Claire discovered the truth too late.””

“What truth?””

The man hesitated.

Then:

“The person who betrayed Claire was the person she asked for help.””

The call ended.

Adrian stood frozen.

Evelyn watched him.

“What did he say?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because suddenly everything had changed.

The warning note.

The folder.

The lawyer’s words.

Everyone was telling him not to trust someone.

But nobody agreed on who.

He looked at Evelyn.

The woman who had admitted lying.

The woman who had tried to open the bear.

The woman Claire may have trusted.

Or may have feared.

Then he looked at the folder.

Inside was still the photograph.

Claire standing outside a building.

With someone behind her.

Someone he hadn’t noticed before.

He picked it up again.

This time, he looked closer.

The person standing beside Claire wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone from his own family.

Someone who had been in the house every day.

Someone who had been there the night Claire died.

Adrian felt the room spin.

Because the person in the photograph was not Evelyn.

It was Robert.

His father.

And written on the back of the photograph were Claire’s final words:

*“If anything happens to me, ask him why he lied.””*
