Chapter 9: The Family That Disappeared

The first thing I did after the call ended was laugh.

Not because anything was funny.

Because my mind had reached a point where reality no longer made sense.

My father was alive.

My mother was alive.

My husband had married me with a hidden purpose.

My best friend had betrayed my family.

And everyone I trusted had been carrying a secret while I was the only person who knew nothing.

I looked around the warehouse.

Everyone was watching me.

Waiting.

For anger.

For tears.

For something.

But I felt nothing.

Just emptiness.

"My mother is alive.""

The words sounded ridiculous when I said them out loud.

Claire lowered her eyes.

Adrian looked shocked.

Rachel looked confused.

Nobody answered.

That silence told me everything.

"You knew.""

I looked at Adrian.

His face changed.

"No.""

"Don't lie.""

"I didn't know she was alive.""

"But you knew something.""

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Adrian.""

His shoulders dropped.

"I knew your mother was connected to the investigation.""

The room spun.

"Investigation?""

He nodded slowly.

"After your father disappeared, I tried to find out what happened.""

"And?""

"I found evidence that someone had staged everything.""

My voice became quiet.

"Including my mother's death?""

Adrian looked away.

That was enough.

I closed my eyes.

Twelve years old.

Standing in a hospital room.

A doctor telling me my mother was gone.

My father holding my hand.

Everyone telling me I had to be strong.

And all this time...

Maybe none of it was true.

Rachel opened another file.

"Elena.""

I looked at her.

"We need to see this.""

"I don't know if I can.""

Rachel's expression softened.

"I know.""

Then she turned the laptop toward me.

A video file.

Recorded recently.

The title was simple.

*FOR ELENA.*

My heart stopped.

"Who recorded that?""

Rachel didn't answer.

I pressed play.

The screen showed an older woman sitting in a small room.

Her hair was gray.

Her face was thinner.

But I knew her.

Even after all these years.

A daughter knows her mother's face.

I covered my mouth.

"Mom...""

Her eyes looked directly into the camera.

And somehow, after twelve years, it felt like she was looking directly at me.

"Elena.""

My tears came instantly.

"I'm sorry.""

The video shook slightly.

"I know you grew up believing I abandoned you.""

I couldn't breathe.

"But I need you to know the truth.""

She looked frightened.

"Your father and I discovered something about the Whitmore family.""

Adrian stiffened.

My mother continued.

"We thought the danger came from Adrian's father.""

A pause.

"We were wrong.""

The room became silent.

"The person we trusted most was the person controlling everything.""

I leaned closer.

"Who?""

My mother's voice trembled.

"Someone inside our family.""

The video ended.

No name.

No explanation.

Just darkness.

I stared at the screen.

"That's it?""

Rachel nodded.

"There is another file.""

She clicked.

A second video appeared.

This one was shorter.

My father.

My heart broke all over again.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

But alive.

"Elena.""

His voice cracked.

"If you are watching this, then the truth has finally reached you.""

I touched the screen.

"Dad...""

He continued.

"I know you will have questions.""

A sad smile appeared.

"You always did.""

I almost cried.

Because that was true.

I had always asked questions.

Except about my own life.

"I need you to understand something. Adrian Whitmore was never the enemy I believed he was.""

Everyone looked at Adrian.

He looked stunned.

My father continued.

"He made mistakes.""

A pause.

"But he was also searching for the same person I was.""

The room went still.

"Adrian was trying to find the person who destroyed both our families.""

My eyes moved to Adrian.

He looked away.

My father continued.

"Elena, if Adrian is with you when you see this, listen carefully.""

I held my breath.

"Do not judge him by the secrets he kept.""

A pause.

"Judge him by what he chooses to do now.""

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Adrian.

For the first time in days, I didn't know what to feel.

Because the man who destroyed my trust...

might also have been the man trying to uncover the truth.

And somehow, that made everything harder.

An hour later, we left the warehouse.

Nobody talked.

Not because we had nothing to say.

Because every answer created another question.

Outside, the city lights reflected against the wet streets.

Claire walked beside me.

I didn't look at her.

"Elena.""

I stopped.

"What?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know you hate me.""

"I don't know what I feel.""

That was the truth.

And somehow, it hurt more.

"I never wanted to hurt you.""

I looked at her.

"But you did.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Her voice broke.

"Because every time I tried, I remembered what I had done.""

"You weren't protecting me.""

"No.""

She looked down.

"I was protecting myself.""

The honesty hurt.

But at least it was honest.

"I am sorry.""

I looked away.

"I don't know if sorry is enough.""

"I know.""

Then she walked away.

For the first time in years...

my best friend left without promising she would come back.

That night, Adrian and I sat across from each other in the empty house.

The same house where we had celebrated birthdays.

Anniversaries.

Christmas mornings.

Now it felt like a museum of lies.

"I should have told you everything.""

Adrian's voice broke the silence.

I stared at the table.

"Yes.""

"I thought keeping you away would protect you.""

"It didn't.""

"I know.""

"You keep saying that.""

"Because I finally understand.""

I looked at him.

"Understand what?""

He looked at the wedding photo on the wall.

"That protecting someone without trusting them isn't protection.""

The sentence surprised me.

Because it was the first time Adrian had admitted the real problem.

Not the secrets.

Not the danger.

The choice.

"You lied to me.""

"Yes.""

"You manipulated me.""

"Yes.""

"You used my feelings.""

He looked down.

"At first.""

I froze.

"At first?""

He swallowed.

"The moment I realized I loved you, I tried to walk away.""

I didn't know why those words hurt.

Maybe because I believed him.

Maybe because I didn't want to.

"What happened?""

"I couldn't.""

"Why?""

He looked at me.

"Because you became the only thing in my life that wasn't part of a plan.""

Silence.

For years, I wanted to hear Adrian say something like that.

Now I wasn't sure if it mattered.

Because love didn't erase betrayal.

It didn't erase the years of silence.

My phone suddenly rang.

This time, I didn't recognize the number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man spoke.

Older.

Calm.

"Elena, listen carefully.""

I stood.

"Who is this?""

A pause.

Then:

"The person who knows why your father disappeared.""

My grip tightened.

"Where are you?""

The man continued.

"You need to leave the house.""

I looked around.

"Why?""

His voice became urgent.

"Because Adrian is not the only one who has been watching you.""

I turned toward Adrian.

He noticed my expression.

"What is it?""

The man continued:

"Someone is inside your house.""

My blood froze.

"What?""

A sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Adrian stood immediately.

"Elena.""

The man on the phone whispered:

"He's been waiting for you to discover the truth.""

The lights suddenly went out.

The house fell into darkness.

Then a voice came from the staircase.

A voice I knew.

A voice I never expected to hear again.

"Elena.""

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Because standing at the top of the stairs...

was my father.
