Chapter 8: The Friend Who Held the Knife
I wanted to believe I had misheard her.
I wanted to believe exhaustion had finally broken my mind.
Because there were some truths that were too impossible to accept.
Claire.
My best friend.
The woman who held my hand at my father's funeral.
The woman who slept on my couch for three nights because she didn't want me to be alone.
The woman who stood beside me in the ballroom and told Adrian to stop.
Her.
The room felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
"Say it again," I whispered.
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"Elena...""
"No.""
My voice became sharper.
"Say it again.""
She looked down.
And that was when I knew.
Because Claire Bennett had always looked me in the eyes when she was telling the truth.
"I made a mistake.""
A cold feeling moved through my body.
"A mistake?""
My laugh sounded broken.
"My father is dead.""
"I know.""
"Because of you?""
Claire closed her eyes.
That was the answer.
I stepped back.
Adrian looked at her with disbelief.
"You knew?""
Claire didn't look at him.
"You don't understand.""
Adrian's expression darkened.
"No. I understand perfectly.""
Rachel moved closer to me.
"Elena, we need to leave.""
But I couldn't move.
Not yet.
Not while the person I trusted most was standing in front of me with a secret that could explain everything.
"Tell me.""
Claire looked at me.
"I never wanted any of this.""
"Nobody ever does.""
The words came out colder than I intended.
"But somehow, everyone keeps destroying my life anyway.""
Claire wiped her face.
"Your father found out.""
"Found out what?""
She looked toward Adrian.
Then at Rachel.
Then back at me.
"About the company.""
I frowned.
"What company?""
"The company behind the foundation.""
Nobody spoke.
Claire continued.
"Your father discovered that the foundation money wasn't being used the way people thought.""
My stomach tightened.
"Adrian?""
Adrian shook his head.
"No.""
That surprised me.
Claire looked at him.
"You still don't know everything.""
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Then explain.""
She took a breath.
"Years ago, before the foundation became what it is today, there was another investor.""
Rachel stepped forward.
"Who?""
Claire looked at her.
"Someone who wanted control.""
The answer was too vague.
"Who?""
Claire looked at me.
Then whispered:
"Me.""
Silence.
I stared.
"What?""
She swallowed.
"My family invested in the original foundation.""
Adrian's face changed.
"What?""
Claire nodded.
"My father was one of the original financial partners.""
I looked at her.
"Your family?""
She nodded.
"The Bennett family.""
Everything started connecting.
The name.
The files.
The documents.
The hidden messages.
"But why?""
My voice broke.
"Why would you do this?""
Claire looked destroyed.
"Because I was trying to save my family.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Elena—"
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"Don't give me a reason that makes you feel better.""
She went silent.
"Your family. Money. Pressure. Fear.""
I pointed at her.
"You had choices.""
Tears fell down her face.
"I know.""
"Did my father know?""
Claire didn't answer.
That was enough.
"Did he know?""
"Yes.""
The word crushed me.
"What did he do?""
Claire whispered:
"He confronted me.""
Six years earlier.
Claire remembered the night like it happened yesterday.
The rain.
The empty office.
The folder sitting on the desk.
She had thought she could fix it.
That was the lie she told herself.
She had convinced herself that if she moved money temporarily, if she covered one mistake, if she protected her family from financial ruin, everything would eventually return to normal.
But then Elena's father found the records.
He saw everything.
The missing funds.
The hidden accounts.
The transfers.
He called Claire to his office.
"I trusted you.""
Those were the first words he said.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Disappointment.
And somehow, that hurt more.
Claire cried.
She begged.
She explained.
She said she never intended for anyone to get hurt.
But Elena's father had already made a decision.
"I have to tell Elena.""
Those words terrified her.
Because Claire knew.
If Elena learned the truth, everything would end.
Her family would collapse.
Her name would be destroyed.
So she made the worst choice of her life.
She called someone for help.
Someone who had power.
Someone who knew how to make problems disappear.
Adrian Whitmore.
Present day.
I looked at Adrian.
"You knew.""
He looked away.
"I suspected.""
My chest tightened.
"How long?""
"Since before we married.""
I felt sick.
"You knew Claire was involved.""
"I knew someone close to your father was involved.""
"Someone?""
I stared at him.
"You couldn't figure out it was her?""
His expression hardened.
"Because I didn't want to believe it.""
That answer stopped me.
Because it sounded familiar.
It sounded like something I had done for years.
Not wanting to believe the person you loved could hurt you.
Rachel opened another file on her laptop.
"There's more.""
Nobody moved.
She turned the screen.
A recording appeared.
Claire's voice.
My blood ran cold.
The date was six years ago.
The night my father disappeared.
Claire's voice came through the speakers.
"I can't let her know.""
Another voice answered.
A man's voice.
Older.
Calm.
I didn't recognize it.
"You should have thought about that before you betrayed us.""
Claire sounded terrified.
"I fixed it.""
"No.""
The man's voice was colder.
"You created a bigger problem.""
The recording ended.
Everyone stared at Claire.
"Who was that?"" I asked.
Claire looked terrified.
"I don't know.""
"You don't know?""
"I swear.""
Adrian stepped toward the laptop.
"Play it again.""
Rachel did.
The voice repeated.
And then Adrian froze.
I noticed immediately.
"What?""
He didn't answer.
"Adrian.""
He looked at me.
His face had gone pale.
"I know that voice.""
The room became silent.
"Who is it?""
Adrian stared at the screen.
Then slowly said:
"My father.""
Nobody spoke.
The impossible became possible again.
Another secret.
Another lie.
Another person who wasn't who they seemed.
Claire whispered:
"That's impossible.""
Adrian ignored her.
"My father died ten years ago.""
I looked at him.
Just like my father.
Another dead man.
Another impossible voice.
Another hidden truth.
Rachel closed the laptop.
"This is bigger than all of us.""
"No," I said.
Everyone looked at me.
I picked up the folder containing my father's letter.
"This ends now.""
Adrian stared.
"Elena.""
I looked at him.
"I spent years thinking I was the person caught in the middle.""
I looked at Claire.
"Then I thought it was you.""
Then Rachel.
"Then I thought it was him.""
I pointed at the files.
"But maybe we've all been looking at the wrong person.""
A silence followed.
Because everyone knew.
There was one person connected to every secret.
The foundation.
The money.
My father.
Adrian.
Claire.
Everyone.
Someone who had been moving pieces from the beginning.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
Again.
Nobody spoke.
I answered.
This time, the voice wasn't unfamiliar.
It was a woman.
Older.
Calm.
Confident.
"Elena.""
My blood froze.
Because I recognized her voice.
Not from the past.
From the present.
From every family dinner.
Every holiday.
Every conversation where she told me everything would be okay.
"Your father left you a message.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Who is this?""
A pause.
Then:
"The woman who raised you.""
My fingers went cold.
No.
It couldn't be.
The woman on the phone continued.
"Your mother wants to tell you the truth.""
I closed my eyes.
Because my mother had died when I was twelve.
At least...
that was what I had been told.
Then the voice whispered:
"Elena, you've been lied to your entire life.""
The call ended.
May you like
And for the first time...
I wondered if I had ever known my family at all.
