Chapter 7: The Marriage That Was a Mission

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because there was too much.

Every memory I had spent eight years protecting suddenly became a question.

Our first meeting.

Our first date.

The night Adrian proposed.

The day we promised forever.

Was any of it real?

Or had I been living inside a story someone else wrote?

I looked at him.

"Say something.""

Adrian stood across from me, his face pale.

For once, he didn't look like the powerful businessman everyone feared.

He looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.

"Elena...""

"No.""

My voice shook.

"But you're going to explain.""

He swallowed.

"Yes.""

"Then start with the truth.""

A painful silence.

"The first time I saw you was at a charity event.""

I remembered.

Eight years ago.

A small fundraiser.

Before the Whitmore Hope Foundation became famous.

I had been volunteering.

He had walked into the room wearing a suit and an expression that made everyone notice him.

I remembered thinking he looked lonely.

Not arrogant.

Not dangerous.

Lonely.

"I saw you talking to my father," Adrian said.

I froze.

"My father?""

He nodded.

"You didn't know it, but he had been meeting with your father.""

"About what?""

"The old scandal.""

My chest tightened.

"So you approached me because of my father.""

"Yes.""

The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.

I looked away.

"How long?""

"What?""

"How long did you plan to use me?""

His face changed.

"I didn't plan to use you.""

"But you did.""

He didn't argue.

That was the worst part.

"I wanted answers.""

I laughed quietly.

"So I was an investigation.""

"No.""

"Then what was I?""

His eyes met mine.

And for one second, I saw regret.

"You were supposed to be a way in.""

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Claire looked furious.

"You married her to get information?""

Adrian immediately looked at her.

"No.""

"But you just said—"

"I was looking for information before I knew her.""

The room went quiet.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Elena, listen to me.""

I didn't move.

"At the beginning, yes. I wanted to know what your father knew.""

My throat tightened.

"And later?""

His voice lowered.

"Later, everything changed.""

I hated that part of me wanted to believe him.

Because that was the cruelest thing about love.

Even after someone breaks your heart, some piece of you still remembers when they held it carefully.

"When did it change?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

"The night your father disappeared.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Adrian sat down slowly.

"Six years ago, your father called me.""

My heart stopped.

"What did he say?""

"He told me he found proof that could destroy powerful people.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"You always say that.""

"Because it's true.""

He rubbed his face.

"He was scared.""

I stared at him.

"My father wasn't scared easily.""

"I know.""

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

Because Adrian had known my father.

A man I thought only I knew.

"He told me something else.""

"What?""

Adrian looked at the table.

"He said if anything happened to him, I had to protect you.""

I froze.

"Protect me?""

"Yes.""

"By marrying me?""

The silence answered.

I felt sick.

"So my father asked you to protect me, and you decided marriage was the answer?""

"No.""

Adrian looked at me.

"I didn't decide that.""

"Then who did?""

His expression changed.

And I knew before he spoke.

"Someone else.""

The old warehouse sat abandoned near the edge of the city.

That was where Rachel brought us after dinner.

She said it was the safest place she knew.

I wasn't sure if that made me feel better or worse.

The building smelled like dust and old metal.

Every sound echoed.

Rachel unlocked a small storage room hidden behind a broken wall.

Inside were boxes.

Dozens of them.

I stared.

"What is this?""

"Your father's archive.""

My heart stopped.

"You had this?""

Rachel shook her head.

"Not me.""

She looked at Adrian.

"He did.""

I turned.

"You had my father's files?""

Adrian looked away.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because I was trying to understand what happened.""

"Or because you were trying to find what he knew?""

He didn't answer.

I walked toward the boxes.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Letters.

Old newspaper articles.

I picked one up.

A photo of my father shaking hands with Adrian's father.

Another photo.

My father and Adrian.

Standing together.

Before I ever met him.

I dropped it.

"You knew him before me.""

"Yes.""

"And you never told me.""

"I was afraid.""

I looked at him.

"Of what?""

"Of losing you.""

The honesty almost hurt more.

"Adrian, you lost me the moment you decided I wasn't worth the truth.""

He closed his eyes.

I turned back to the boxes.

Then something caught my attention.

A small envelope.

My name written on it.

Not printed.

Written.

My father's handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

"No.""

Claire moved closer.

"What is it?""

I couldn't answer.

Because I knew that handwriting.

I had seen it thousands of times.

Birthday cards.

Notes.

Letters.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Only a few sentences.

My dearest Elena,

If you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth myself.

I stopped breathing.

The room disappeared.

Your husband knows more than he admits, but he is not the only person you should fear.

My hands trembled.

The person who destroyed our families is someone you trust.

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

I continued reading.

Do not believe anyone who tells you this was about money.

It was never about money.

It was about control.

Then the final line.

The one that made my blood run cold.

The person who started this has been standing beside you for years.

The paper slipped from my fingers.

"No.""

Claire picked it up.

"Elena...""

I looked at Adrian.

He looked as shocked as I was.

"Did you know about this?""

"No.""

For the first time, I believed him.

Because he looked genuinely terrified.

Rachel took the letter.

"There's more.""

She turned the page over.

A hidden message was written on the back.

A name.

Only one name.

I watched her face change.

"What?""

Rachel slowly looked up.

Her lips parted.

"No.""

"What is it?""

She handed me the paper.

I looked down.

And every part of me went cold.

Because the name written there was not Adrian.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't anyone from his company.

It was someone I had trusted my entire life.

Someone who had hugged me after my father's funeral.

Someone who had told me they would always protect me.

The name was:

*Claire Bennett.*

I looked at my best friend.

She stepped backward.

"Elena, I can explain.""

The room became silent.

Adrian stared at Claire.

"You.""

Claire's face changed.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Something else.

Something that looked like she had been waiting for this moment.

"I didn't want you to find out like this.""

My heartbeat stopped.

"Find out what?""

Claire looked at me.

And then she said the one sentence I never thought I would hear from her.

"Your father didn't die because of Adrian.""

May you like

A pause.

"He died because he discovered what I had done.""
