Chapter 5: The Marriage Built on a Lie

I didn't scream.

That surprised me.

A week ago, if someone had told me Adrian Whitmore could enter my house uninvited and stand outside my office after everything he had done, I would have imagined myself breaking down.

Crying.

Begging for answers.

Demanding to know why.

But standing there, watching the door slowly open, I felt something else.

Clarity.

Because fear only works when you still believe someone has power over you.

And for the first time in eight years, I didn't.

Adrian stepped inside.

He looked different without the cameras.

Without the ballroom.

Without the crowd of people who believed his carefully created image.

He looked like a man who had lost something.

But I knew better now.

Adrian didn't mourn people.

He mourned control.

"You shouldn't be here," I said.

His eyes moved around the office.

The photographs.

The books.

The memories.

"That's my house too.""

I stared at him.

"Is it?""

A flicker crossed his face.

Anger.

Pain.

Maybe both.

"Elena.""

"No.""

My voice surprised even me.

"No more saying my name like that.""

He stopped.

Because he knew that tone.

The tone of someone who had finally stopped asking for permission.

"What do you want?""

He closed the door behind him.

"I want to explain.""

I almost laughed.

"Explain what?""

"The video.""

"The slap?""

His jaw tightened.

"That wasn't supposed to happen.""

I stepped closer.

"You keep saying that.""

"Because it's true.""

"No, Adrian.""

I shook my head.

"What's true is that you finally lost control.""

The silence between us was heavy.

Then he said something I never expected.

"I was trying to protect you.""

For a second, I actually forgot how to respond.

Protect me.

The same man who humiliated me.

The same man who had another woman beside him.

The same man who had been collecting information about me like I was an enemy.

"From what?""

His eyes moved away.

That was the first crack.

"I can't tell you everything.""

A cold laugh escaped me.

"Of course you can't.""

"Elena.""

"You don't get to come into my office after destroying my life and ask me to trust you.""

"I never destroyed your life.""

I looked at him.

"You destroyed the version of my life I believed in.""

That hit him.

I saw it.

But then, just as quickly, the wall returned.

"The truth is complicated.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"The truth is usually simple. People just make excuses around it.""

Adrian walked toward my desk.

I immediately stepped between him and the photographs.

He noticed.

His expression changed.

A small, painful realization.

"You really think I'm your enemy now.""

I stared at him.

"You made yourself my enemy.""

He looked down.

And for one brief second, I saw the man I married.

The man who used to bring me coffee when I worked late.

The man who held my hand during my father's funeral.

The man who promised he would never become like his own father.

Then I remembered the ballroom.

The hand against my face.

The woman beside him.

The lies.

And the memory disappeared.

"Tell me about the day we met," I said.

His eyes lifted.

"What?""

"You came here for a reason.""

He went still.

"Rachel said you collected information about me before we married.""

Adrian didn't answer.

That was enough.

My stomach dropped.

"Is it true?""

A long silence.

Then:

"Yes.""

The word felt heavier than I expected.

I sat down slowly.

Eight years.

Eight years of marriage.

And the truth was one word.

Yes.

"Why?""

He didn't speak.

"Why were you watching me?""

His face tightened.

"Because I needed to know who you were.""

I stared at him.

"Before you married me?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

He looked toward the window.

"Because of my father.""

I frowned.

"What does your father have to do with this?""

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

"My father trusted the wrong people.""

I waited.

"He lost everything because of someone he believed in.""

I studied his face.

"That doesn't explain spying on me.""

"No.""

He looked at me.

"It explains why I was afraid.""

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

"Fear doesn't excuse what you did.""

"I know.""

The answer surprised me.

Adrian Whitmore admitting something.

But it wasn't enough.

Not anymore.

"Who am I to you, Adrian?""

He looked confused.

"What?""

"Am I your wife?""

Silence.

"Your partner?""

Silence.

"Or was I just another person you researched before deciding I was useful?""

His expression changed.

And I hated that I was still searching his face for an answer.

Because some part of me still wanted him to prove everything was a lie.

But he didn't.

Instead, he said:

"When I met you, I wasn't planning to fall in love with you.""

My heart tightened.

"That's not an answer.""

"It is.""

"No.""

I stood.

"It's an excuse.""

He looked at me.

"I watched you because I thought everyone had an agenda.""

"And me?""

"You didn't.""

The room became quiet.

"You were the first person who didn't want anything from me.""

I looked away.

Because those words would have meant everything before.

Now they only hurt.

"Then why did you destroy me?""

His face changed.

"I didn't.""

"You did.""

"No, Elena.""

His voice became sharper.

"You don't understand what happened.""

"Then explain.""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

And there it was.

The problem.

Adrian always had an explanation.

But not tonight.

Not for this.

A knock interrupted us.

Both of us froze.

Then the front door opened downstairs.

"Elena?""

Claire.

Relief hit me.

A second later, Claire appeared in the doorway.

She looked from me to Adrian.

Her expression hardened.

"You.""

Adrian turned.

"This doesn't concern you.""

Claire laughed.

"Everything concerning Elena concerns me.""

Adrian ignored her.

"She needs to hear the truth.""

Claire looked at me.

"From him?""

The question hurt because I didn't know the answer.

Adrian stepped toward the door.

"You want to know why Rachel had those files?""

I looked at him.

"Yes.""

He stopped.

"Because she wasn't collecting evidence against me.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What are you talking about?""

Adrian looked at Claire.

Then at me.

"Rachel was working with someone else.""

The room went cold.

"Who?""

His eyes locked onto mine.

"Someone who wants me destroyed.""

"Who?""

He hesitated.

Then he said:

"Your father.""

I froze.

The world seemed to stop.

"My father is dead.""

"I know.""

Adrian's voice dropped.

"That's why this is more complicated.""

I couldn't speak.

My father had died six years ago.

He was the person who taught me to trust people.

The person who told me to choose kindness over revenge.

The person who loved Adrian.

At least, I thought he did.

"You're lying.""

Adrian shook his head.

"I wish I was.""

Claire stepped forward.

"Elena, don't listen to him.""

But Adrian reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out an old photograph.

Then placed it on the desk.

I looked down.

And my blood ran cold.

It was my father.

Standing beside Adrian.

But the date on the back made no sense.

Because it was taken two months after my father was supposed to have died.

I picked up the photograph with shaking hands.

"This is impossible.""

Adrian's voice was barely a whisper.

"That's what I thought too.""

I looked at him.

"What does this mean?""

He stared at the photograph.

"It means your father didn't disappear from my life.""

A pause.

"It means he was waiting.""

The room fell silent.

Then Adrian said the words that changed everything.

"Elena, the man you thought died six years ago...""

May you like

He looked at me.

"May have been the person who started this entire war.""
