Chapter 6: The Father Who Never Left

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

My fingers went numb.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

My father.

Standing beside Adrian.

Alive.

Smiling.

A man I had buried.

A man I had cried over.

A man whose funeral I attended while holding Adrian's hand because I thought my husband was the only person left who understood my pain.

But the date on the back of the photograph was impossible.

Two months after his death.

"This is fake," I whispered.

Adrian didn't move.

"I thought the same thing.""

I looked up.

"You expect me to believe you?""

"No.""

The answer surprised me.

He looked exhausted.

"I expect you to hate me.""

I held the photograph tighter.

"Good. Because I do.""

The words came out before I could stop them.

And for the first time, Adrian didn't defend himself.

He accepted it.

Claire stepped closer.

"Elena, give me the photo.""

I handed it to her.

She studied it carefully.

"Where did you get this?""

Adrian looked at her.

"From the same files Rachel found.""

Claire's expression changed.

"Rachel knew about this?""

"Not everything.""

He paused.

"Nobody knew everything.""

I looked at him.

"You keep saying that.""

"Because it's true.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Because you like being the only person with answers.""

The accusation landed.

And this time, he didn't deny it.

That hurt more than if he had.

Because a part of me knew it was true.

Adrian had built his entire life around secrets.

He didn't just hide information.

He controlled it.

"You said my father started this," I said.

Adrian nodded.

"I said he may have.""

"Explain.""

He looked toward the window.

The rain had stopped, but the sky remained dark.

"Your father and I weren't always enemies.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He was one of my father's closest business partners.""

My eyebrows pulled together.

"My father worked with your family?""

"Yes.""

"Then why don't I know about this?""

Adrian looked at me.

"Because both our families wanted it forgotten.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What happened?""

He took a breath.

"The company my father built was destroyed by a financial scandal.""

I knew the story.

Everyone did.

Adrian Whitmore's father had lost everything before Adrian rebuilt the family name.

But there was one detail I never knew.

"The scandal wasn't random," Adrian said.

"What does that mean?""

"Someone leaked private financial documents.""

My heart started beating faster.

"Your father?""

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

And that was answer enough.

I stepped back.

"No.""

"Elena—"

"No.""

I shook my head.

"My father would never do that.""

"I know.""

The words stopped me.

"You know?""

Adrian looked at me.

"That's what made it complicated.""

I stared.

"If you think he did it, why say that?""

"Because I spent years believing he did.""

The room became silent.

Then he continued.

"Until I found evidence that someone else was controlling both sides.""

"Who?""

He looked at the photograph.

"I don't know.""

That was the first honest thing he had said all morning.

And somehow, it scared me more.

Two hours later, we sat in the private room of an old restaurant outside the city.

A place where nobody knew Adrian.

A place where nobody cared about his reputation.

Or mine.

Rachel joined us.

When she saw the photograph, her face changed.

"You found it.""

I looked at her.

"You knew?""

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

"I knew there was something connected to Elena's father.""

"Something?""

My voice sharpened.

"You knew my father might be alive?""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"I knew Adrian believed your father knew something.""

I looked at Adrian.

"And you never told me?""

His eyes lowered.

"I was trying to protect you.""

I almost laughed.

Again.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

Rachel placed her hands on the table.

"Elena, listen to me.""

I looked at her.

"Six years ago, when your father supposedly died, Adrian was investigating the old scandal.""

"Why?""

"Because he found inconsistencies.""

Adrian nodded.

"The financial records didn't match.""

Claire frowned.

"Meaning?""

"Meaning someone wanted both families destroyed.""

I looked between them.

"Why?""

Nobody answered.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Rachel opened her laptop.

"I found something else.""

She turned the screen toward me.

An old document appeared.

At the top was a name.

*WHITMORE FOUNDATION ORIGINAL TRUST AGREEMENT.*

I frowned.

"What is this?""

Rachel looked at Adrian.

Then back at me.

"The foundation wasn't created by Adrian.""

I looked confused.

"What?""

"It was created by your father.""

The room went completely still.

I stared at Adrian.

He looked away.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't know until recently.""

Rachel continued.

"Your father created the foundation under a different name. After the scandal, Adrian's family took control of the assets and rebuilt it.""

My stomach twisted.

"So everything Adrian built...""

"Was connected to your father.""

I couldn't breathe.

The foundation.

The speeches.

The charity events.

The entire public image Adrian had created.

All connected to my family.

All connected to a secret nobody told me.

"Why would my father hide this from me?""

Rachel closed the laptop.

"Maybe he wasn't hiding it from you.""

She looked at Adrian.

"Maybe someone was hiding it from him.""

Before anyone could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

"Hello?""

No response.

Then a man's voice.

Older.

Familiar.

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I hadn't heard it in six years.

But a daughter never forgets her father's voice.

"Elena.""

The world disappeared.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

Claire grabbed my hand.

"Elena?""

The voice continued.

"I'm sorry.""

Tears filled my eyes.

"No.""

My voice broke.

"No, this isn't possible.""

The man on the phone breathed heavily.

"I know what Adrian told you.""

I looked at Adrian.

His face had gone pale.

"You need to listen carefully.""

My hand trembled.

"Dad?""

The silence afterward almost killed me.

Then:

"Don't trust him.""

My heart stopped.

I looked at Adrian.

The man I married.

The man who claimed he was protecting me.

The man who had spent years hiding the truth.

"Why?""

My father's voice cracked.

"Because Adrian didn't marry you by accident.""

The room spun.

"What are you saying?""

Another pause.

Then the words came.

Words that shattered the last piece of my old life.

"He married you because of me.""

I couldn't breathe.

Adrian stood suddenly.

"Elena, hang up.""

I turned toward him.

The fear on his face wasn't anger.

It wasn't control.

It was panic.

And that scared me more than anything.

My father's voice became urgent.

"Elena, you have to get away from him before—"

The call cut off.

I stared at my phone.

Nobody spoke.

Then I slowly looked at Adrian.

"What did he mean?""

He didn't answer.

"Adrian.""

Still nothing.

The silence was unbearable.

Then he whispered:

"Because he's right.""

My blood ran cold.

Claire stepped forward.

"What?""

Adrian closed his eyes.

And when he opened them again, I saw something I had never seen before.

Shame.

"I didn't meet you by chance.""

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

"Then why?""

He looked at me.

And his next words destroyed the last thing I still believed.

"Because when I first saw you...""

A pause.

"I was looking for your father.""

My heart broke.

Because suddenly I wasn't sure which was worse.

That Adrian had lied to me.

May you like

Or that maybe...

he had loved me only after the lie began.
