Chapter 6: The Brother Who Was Never Gone

Adrian stared at the document.

The paper shook slightly in his hand.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was trying to understand how the entire foundation of his life could have been built on a lie.

Lucas Hart.

His younger brother.

The boy he had mourned.

The boy he had been told was gone forever.

Was alive.

And somehow, Vanessa knew.

Clara watched Adrian carefully.

She had seen him angry.

She had seen him scared.

But she had never seen him look broken.

“Adrian…”

He didn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the signature.

Vanessa Cole.

The woman who had stood beside him.

The woman who had promised to love his daughter.

The woman who had looked him in the eyes and acted like she had no secrets.

“How?”” Adrian finally whispered.

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

“We checked the archive records again.””

“And?””

“The document was hidden.””

“Hidden where?””

“Inside an old company storage file under a false category.””

Adrian looked up.

“Who had access?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your father.””

A bitter smile crossed Adrian’s face.

“Of course.””

Clara touched the folder.

“What exactly does this document mean?””

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Maybe you should explain.””

Adrian sat down slowly.

For a moment, he looked like he didn’t want to speak.

Like saying the words would make them real.

“Lucas was twelve years younger than me.””

Clara listened.

“He was different from me.””

“How?””

Adrian looked toward the mansion.

“I wanted to prove myself. I wanted to take over the company one day. I thought success was the only way to earn my father’s respect.””

He paused.

“Lucas didn’t care about any of that.””

“What did he care about?””

“People.””

Clara smiled sadly.

“That sounds like someone your father would dislike.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You’re right.””

He continued.

“Lucas used to say my father treated everyone like pieces on a chessboard.””

Daniel remained silent.

Because he already understood where the story was going.

“One day, Lucas found something.””

“What?””

Adrian looked at the document.

“Financial records.””

Clara frowned.

“About the company?””

“Yes.””

“What was wrong with them?””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“He found out my father had been moving money through hidden accounts.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Fraud?””

“Possibly more.””

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

“But before Lucas could expose him, he disappeared.””

Clara lowered her voice.

“And your father told everyone he died?””

Adrian nodded.

“He said there was an accident.””

“But you never saw proof.””

“No.””

“Why did you believe him?””

The question was gentle.

But it hurt.

Adrian looked down.

“Because I was twenty-four.””

He swallowed.

“And because I wanted to believe him.””

Nobody spoke.

Sometimes the hardest lies to accept were the ones people told themselves.

That afternoon, Adrian made a decision.

They were going to find Lucas.

Not tomorrow.

Not after more investigation.

Now.

Daniel traced old records.

Clara stayed with Lily.

And Adrian went through every piece of information his father had left behind.

For hours, they found nothing.

Until Daniel discovered a forgotten address.

A small property outside the city.

Registered under a company name.

But the owner history had one familiar connection.

“Lucas,” Daniel said.

Adrian looked up immediately.

“What?””

“The property was transferred six years ago.””

“By who?””

Daniel turned the screen.

“Vanessa Cole.””

The room went quiet.

Adrian stood.

“She knew where he was.””

“Yes.””

“And she never told me.””

“No.””

Clara looked at him.

“Why would she hide your brother?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because there were too many possibilities.

And none of them were good.

The old house sat at the edge of the city.

Far away from the wealth and attention surrounding the Hart family.

The paint was peeling.

The garden was overgrown.

The windows were covered.

It looked abandoned.

But the front door was unlocked.

Adrian walked inside first.

“Lucas?””

No answer.

The house smelled like dust and old paper.

Not empty.

Forgotten.

Clara followed behind him.

“Someone lived here.””

Daniel checked the rooms.

“There are recent signs.””

Adrian looked around.

On the wall were photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Newspaper articles.

Company records.

Pictures of the Hart family.

And in the center of everything was one person.

Lucas.

Older.

Alive.

Watching.

Studying.

Clara whispered:

“He’s been collecting information.””

Adrian walked closer.

His younger brother’s face stared back at him.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

Then he saw something else.

A picture of Lily.

Adrian froze.

“What?””

Clara came closer.

Someone had taken a photograph of Lily playing in the garden.

The picture was recent.

Very recent.

Adrian grabbed the frame.

“He was watching her.””

Daniel looked around.

“Mr. Hart…”

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone stopped.

Footsteps.

Someone was inside.

Adrian immediately moved toward the stairs.

“Lucas?””

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice answered.

“You always were too late.””

Adrian froze.

The voice.

Older.

But familiar.

“Lucas.””

A man stepped into view.

He looked nothing like the missing child Adrian remembered.

He was taller.

His face was harder.

And near his eye was a thin scar.

The same scar Lily had described.

Clara instinctively moved closer to Adrian.

Lucas looked at her.

“So this is Clara.””

Adrian stared.

“You know her?””

Lucas smiled faintly.

“I know everyone who enters your life.””

The words sent a chill through the room.

“What do you want?”” Adrian asked.

Lucas walked down the stairs slowly.

“What I wanted eight years ago.””

“Which was?””

“The truth.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“You destroyed my daughter’s life to get it?””

Lucas looked confused.

“No.””

“Then why was Lily trapped?””

Lucas looked at Daniel.

Then Clara.

Then back at Adrian.

“Because I didn’t do that.””

Nobody moved.

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Lucas’s expression changed.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“I expect you to finally stop believing the wrong people.””

Then he reached into his coat.

Clara tensed.

But Lucas pulled out a small envelope.

He handed it to Adrian.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

Lucas looked toward the photographs on the wall.

“Of who has been controlling your family for years.””

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A young Vanessa.

Standing beside Richard Hart.

And beside them…

A child.

Adrian’s breath caught.

Because the child was Lucas.

But the date on the back was impossible.

It was taken after the day his father claimed Lucas had died.

Clara looked at the picture.

“She knew you were alive.””

Lucas nodded.

“She always knew.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Why?””

Lucas’s eyes became cold.

“Because Vanessa wasn’t just my guardian.””

A long silence followed.

Then Lucas said:

“She was my mother’s daughter.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Lucas looked at him.

“It means your father didn’t just hide my existence.””

He pointed toward the photograph.

“He hid who I really was.””

Before Adrian could respond, Lucas’s phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Who is it?””

Lucas didn’t answer.

He slowly turned the phone around.

The caller ID was visible.

A single name.

A name that made everyone in the room freeze.

*Lily Hart.*

Clara looked at Adrian.

“That’s impossible.””

Because Lily was standing right beside them.

And her smartwatch was still in Clara’s hand.

Then the phone rang again.

And this time, a voice came through the speaker.

A child’s voice.

Terrified.

“Help me…”

Everyone went silent.

May you like

Because it was Lily.

And she was not with them.
