Chapter 1: The Sound Beneath the Toys

The first sign that something was wrong was not a scream.

It was a tiny tapping sound coming from inside a wooden toy chest in the middle of a room filled with expensive dolls, golden decorations, and toys that no child could ever finish playing with.

Lily Hart was only six years old.

She was supposed to be safe.

That was what everyone kept saying about the mansion on the hill.

Safe behind tall iron gates.

Safe under the watch of cameras covering every corner of the property.

Safe surrounded by adults who smiled at her, hugged her, and promised her father they would protect her.

But that afternoon, inside the most beautiful room in the entire house, Lily was alone in the dark.

And someone had made sure nobody would hear her.

The Hart mansion was the kind of place people photographed from the street.

The marble floors always shined.

The flowers in the entrance hall were replaced every morning.

The living room looked like something from a magazine, with huge windows overlooking the garden and furniture that nobody was allowed to touch.

Adrian Hart had built that life after years of hard work.

He had everything people dreamed about.

A successful company.

A beautiful home.

A daughter who was the center of his world.

But Adrian had one weakness.

He believed the people closest to him would never betray him.

And that belief was about to cost him more than he could imagine.

“Lily?”” Clara Bennett called from the hallway.

“Sweetheart, it’s almost time for your art lesson.””

No answer.

Clara stopped walking.

She held a small tray with Lily’s favorite strawberry cookies, still warm from the kitchen. Normally, the smell alone would bring Lily running.

The little girl would appear with paint on her hands, her hair messy, and a huge smile on her face.

Not today.

Clara looked into the playroom.

The door was slightly open.

Inside, everything looked normal.

Too normal.

The dolls sat neatly on the shelves.

The stuffed animals were arranged beside the reading corner.

A small painting Lily had made of her and her father hung crookedly on the wall.

But Lily was nowhere.

“Lily?”” Clara stepped inside.

“Where are you hiding, little bird?””

For three months, Clara had been Lily’s nanny.

She was not part of the wealthy world Adrian lived in.

She did not wear designer clothes or attend expensive parties.

She was just someone who understood children.

Someone who noticed when Lily was quiet.

Someone who remembered that Lily hated thunderstorms and always wanted the hallway light left on at night.

And right now, every instinct inside Clara was telling her something was wrong.

She placed the tray down.

“Lily, this isn’t funny anymore.””

A voice came from the doorway.

“She probably went outside.””

Clara turned.

Vanessa Cole stood there wearing a perfectly pressed white dress, her expression filled with concern.

Vanessa was Adrian’s fiancée.

The woman everyone expected would soon become Lily’s stepmother.

“I was looking for her too,” Vanessa said, walking into the room.

“I thought she was with you.””

Clara frowned.

“With me? No. I came here because I thought she was with you.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened slightly.

“Why would she be with me?””

The question sounded innocent.

But something about it felt strange.

Clara looked around the room again.

“Because you were the last person I saw with her.””

Vanessa gave a small laugh.

“Clara, are you accusing me of something?””

“I’m asking where Lily is.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I think you’re being dramatic.””

Before Clara could respond, Adrian rushed into the room.

“What happened?””

His voice was sharp with fear.

He had been in his office when Vanessa called him, saying Lily had disappeared.

For Adrian, the word disappeared was enough to make his entire body freeze.

“Where is my daughter?”” he asked.

Vanessa immediately walked toward him.

“Adrian, I’m so sorry. I was only gone for a few minutes. I thought Clara was watching her.””

Clara stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“I came to check on Lily, and she wasn’t here.””

“You never said that on the phone,” Adrian said.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I was scared. I didn’t know what to say.””

Clara felt something cold move through her chest.

That was not what happened.

She knew it.

But Adrian looked terrified.

And terrified people often believed the first explanation they heard.

“Let’s not blame anyone right now,” Adrian said.

“We need to find Lily.””

Everyone began searching.

The bedrooms.

The garden.

The kitchen.

The outdoor play area.

Adrian called her name again and again.

“Lily! Daddy’s here!””

But there was no answer.

Vanessa followed close behind him, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.

“Don’t worry,” she whispered.

“We’ll find her.””

Clara watched her carefully.

Something was wrong.

Not because Vanessa looked worried.

Because she looked prepared.

Then Clara heard it.

A sound so quiet that everyone else missed it.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

She stopped walking.

Her eyes moved toward the corner of the playroom.

The old wooden toy chest sat beneath the window.

It was filled with stuffed animals, blankets, and dolls.

Clara slowly approached it.

“Wait.””

Adrian turned.

“What?””

Clara raised a hand.

“Listen.””

Nobody moved.

The room became silent.

Then they heard it.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Adrian’s face changed instantly.

“Lily?””

He ran forward.

Clara opened the chest.

Inside, beneath a pile of stuffed animals, was Lily.

Her small body was curled up.

Her cheeks were wet with tears.

Her tiny hands reached upward.

“Clara…”

The little girl immediately grabbed onto her.

Clara pulled her out and held her tightly.

“Oh my God. Lily.””

Lily buried her face against Clara’s shoulder.

Adrian dropped to his knees.

“Sweetheart, are you okay?””

Lily looked at him.

Her lips trembled.

Then she pointed toward the doorway.

“She locked me inside.””

The room went completely still.

Adrian looked confused.

“Who did?””

Lily’s fingers tightened around Clara’s shirt.

“Vanessa.””

Vanessa gasped.

“What?””

Her voice cracked perfectly.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Hurt.

“Lily, why would you say that?””

The little girl immediately hid her face.

Clara looked at Vanessa.

And for the first time, she noticed something.

Vanessa was not shocked that Lily had been found.

She was shocked that Lily had spoken.

“That’s not true,” Vanessa said quickly.

“Adrian, you know children make up stories sometimes.””

Clara held Lily closer.

“She’s scared.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. She’s confused.””

Adrian looked between them.

His daughter.

His fiancée.

The two people standing in front of him.

He wanted to believe Lily.

But he also wanted to believe Vanessa.

And Vanessa knew exactly how to use that hesitation.

“I would never hurt her,” Vanessa whispered.

“I love Lily.””

Then she turned toward Clara.

“But maybe we should ask why Lily was left alone in that room.””

Clara’s eyes widened.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“I’m saying maybe we’re looking at the wrong person.””

The accusation landed like a stone.

Adrian stared at Clara.

“Clara…”

She stepped back.

“No. Don’t do this.””

“I’m just trying to understand what happened,” Adrian said.

“I was searching for her.””

Vanessa shook her head slowly.

“Were you?””

Clara felt her heart sink.

The person who had found Lily was now being treated like a suspect.

And Lily, still holding onto Clara, started crying harder.

“Daddy…”

Adrian looked at his daughter.

But before he could answer, Vanessa spoke again.

“Adrian, maybe we should check the cameras.””

Clara nodded immediately.

“Yes. Check them.””

Vanessa hesitated for half a second.

Just half a second.

But Clara saw it.

And then Vanessa smiled.

“Of course.””

They walked toward Adrian’s office where the security system was stored.

Everyone followed.

Everyone except Lily.

The little girl stayed beside Clara, holding her hand tightly.

As they entered the office, Adrian turned on the monitor.

The security footage loaded.

The room filled with silence.

Then Vanessa spoke softly.

“Whatever happened… we’ll finally know the truth.””

Clara looked at the screen.

She expected to see proof.

She expected the cameras to show what happened.

But when the footage appeared, her blood ran cold.

The recording from the playroom was missing.

Not blurry.

Not damaged.

Gone.

Adrian frowned.

“Why is there no footage?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily slowly looked up at Clara.

Her small voice barely escaped.

“Because she told me the cameras were sleeping…”

Clara froze.

And on the desk beside the security monitor, a tiny blue light began flashing from Lily’s smartwatch.

May you like

A device nobody had remembered.

A device that had been recording the entire time.
