Chapter 5: The Secret Hidden in the Family Name

Adrian stared at the smartwatch.

The tiny screen glowed in the darkness of Lily’s bedroom.

A new recording.

No notification.

No call.

No explanation.

Just a file that appeared out of nowhere.

Clara stood beside him, watching his expression change.

“Adrian.””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the watch.

Because there was only one person who should have been connected to that device.

Lily.

And Lily was asleep.

“Don’t touch it yet,” Daniel said from behind them.

They turned.

The security manager had followed them upstairs after hearing the call.

“That device has already been compromised once,” Daniel explained.

“We don’t know who sent that file.””

Adrian looked at him.

“But someone wants us to hear it.””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s what worries me.””

Clara looked through the doorway at Lily.

The little girl was sleeping peacefully.

Completely unaware that the adults around her were uncovering secrets that had been buried for years.

“She’s been through enough,” Clara whispered.

Adrian looked at his daughter.

Then at the watch.

“I need to know the truth.””

Clara understood.

Because this was no longer just about clearing her name.

Someone had entered Adrian’s home.

Someone had targeted his daughter.

And someone was using the secrets of his family to do it.

Daniel carefully connected the smartwatch to a secure computer.

The file appeared.

No sender.

No location.

No device information.

Only a title.

*FOR ADRIAN.*

Clara frowned.

“That’s not creepy at all.””

Daniel looked serious.

“Whoever sent this wanted you to know it was personal.””

Adrian pressed play.

At first, there was silence.

Then an old man’s voice filled the room.

A voice Adrian recognized instantly.

His father.

Richard Hart.

The man who had built the Hart empire.

The man who had taught Adrian everything about business.

The man who had died five years earlier.

Adrian stepped back.

“No.””

The recording continued.

Richard’s voice was calm.

Almost emotionless.

“Adrian, if you are hearing this, then someone has finally forced you to look at the truth.””

Clara watched Adrian carefully.

His father’s voice had changed him.

He was no longer the confident businessman everyone knew.

He was a son hearing a ghost.

Richard continued.

“You have spent your entire life believing that protecting a family means hiding its mistakes.””

Adrian’s face tightened.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

The recording played on.

“There are things I never told you about Evelyn.””

Daniel exchanged a look with Clara.

The name appeared again.

Richard continued.

“She was not fired because she stole from us.””

Adrian froze.

Clara felt her stomach drop.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“She discovered what I had done.””

A long silence followed.

Then Richard said:

“And I made sure nobody believed her.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

His father was admitting it.

After all these years.

The accusation.

The ruined reputation.

The disappearance.

Everything.

It had been a lie.

Clara looked at Adrian.

“Your father framed her.””

He didn’t respond.

He couldn’t.

Richard’s voice continued.

“I thought I had buried the problem forever.””

A pause.

“But Evelyn was smarter than I expected.””

The audio became slightly distorted.

“She copied evidence before I destroyed the files.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“What evidence?””

Richard answered as if he could hear the question.

“Evidence that could destroy this family.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

The silence afterward felt heavier than the recording itself.

Finally, Adrian spoke.

“My father was protecting something.””

Clara looked at him.

“Something worse than what he admitted?””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“My father didn’t care about losing money.””

“Then what?””

Adrian looked at the screen.

“Power.””

The next morning, the Hart mansion no longer felt like a home.

It felt like a crime scene.

Every room held a question.

Every locked drawer felt suspicious.

Daniel’s team searched old records.

Adrian searched through his father’s personal files.

And Clara stayed with Lily.

The little girl had barely left her side since the incident.

They sat together in the garden.

Lily was drawing with colored pencils.

“What are you making?”” Clara asked.

Lily held up the paper.

A picture of four people.

Clara.

Lily.

Adrian.

And another person standing far away.

Clara looked at the drawing.

“Who is that?””

Lily’s hand stopped.

“That’s the person in the hallway.””

Clara’s expression changed.

“You remember them?””

“A little.””

“What do you remember?””

Lily looked at the picture.

“They were angry.””

“Did they say anything?””

Lily nodded.

“They said Daddy forgot.””

Clara frowned.

“Forgot what?””

Lily shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then she pointed at the person she drew.

“They had a scar.””

Clara leaned closer.

“A scar?””

“Here.””

Lily touched the side of her own face.

“Near their eye.””

Clara immediately grabbed her phone.

She searched through the information Daniel had provided.

Evelyn.

Former Hart employee.

No recent photographs.

No current address.

Nothing.

Then she noticed something.

A family photograph from eight years ago.

Richard Hart standing beside his employees.

Adrian was younger.

Evelyn stood in the back.

And beside her…

A young man.

Clara zoomed in.

A scar.

Near his eye.

Her breath stopped.

“Adrian.””

He came outside.

“What?””

She handed him the phone.

He looked.

His face changed.

“No.””

“Who is he?””

Adrian stared at the picture.

“That’s…”

He swallowed.

“My brother.””

Clara froze.

“You have a brother?””

Adrian looked away.

“I had a brother.””

The words were quiet.

“What happened?””

Adrian sat down.

For the first time since Clara had known him, he looked lost.

“His name was Lucas.””

“What happened to him?””

Adrian looked at Lily.

Then at the mansion.

Then back at the picture.

“My father told everyone Lucas died.””

“But?””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“But I never saw a body.””

The garden became silent.

Clara felt a chill.

“You think he’s alive?””

“I don’t know.””

“But the scar…”

Adrian nodded.

“I know.””

Before they could say anything else, Daniel rushed outside.

His face was pale.

“Mr. Hart.””

Adrian stood.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked between Adrian and Clara.

“We found something in the old company archives.””

“What?””

Daniel held a folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph taken yesterday.

Adrian looked at it.

Then stopped breathing.

Because the picture showed the person who entered his mansion.

The person who helped create the fake video.

The person who had been watching his family.

And standing beside that person was Vanessa.

Clara looked at Adrian.

“Vanessa knew him.””

Daniel nodded.

“But that’s not the worst part.””

Adrian looked up.

“What could be worse?””

Daniel slowly opened the folder.

Inside was a document.

An old legal record.

With a signature at the bottom.

Adrian recognized it immediately.

Because it was his father’s signature.

And the document contained one sentence that changed everything.

*Transfer of guardianship: Lucas Hart.*

Adrian stared.

His hands began shaking.

“My brother wasn’t dead.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Clara noticed something else.

A second signature.

Someone had signed the document years later.

Someone still alive.

Someone who had been in their house yesterday.

She pointed.

“Adrian…”

He followed her finger.

His face went pale.

Because beneath the second signature was a name.

*Vanessa Cole.*

And suddenly, the biggest question was no longer who locked Lily inside the toy chest.

It was why Vanessa had spent years hiding Adrian’s missing brother.
