Chapter 3: The Woman in the Impossible Video
The video played again.
Nobody asked for it.
Nobody wanted to.
But Vanessa pressed replay anyway.
The room filled with the same image.
Clara standing inside Lily’s playroom.
Clara walking toward the toy chest.
Clara looking around as if she was making sure nobody was watching.
Then the video cut off.
A perfect little story.
A perfect little lie.
Adrian stared at the screen.
His face had become unreadable.
Clara had known him long enough to understand something most people didn’t.
Adrian’s anger was not the most dangerous thing about him.
His silence was.
“Say something,” Vanessa whispered.
Clara looked at Adrian.
“I didn’t do that.””
Vanessa sighed.
“Of course you would say that.””
“No,” Clara said firmly.
“I mean I literally did not do that.””
Adrian looked back at the screen.
“Clara, the video shows you in the room.””
“It shows someone who looks like me.””
Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.
“Someone who looks like you?””
Clara turned toward her.
“Yes.””
“That’s your explanation?””
“It’s the truth.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You expect Adrian to believe someone copied your face?””
Clara did not answer.
Because she knew how impossible it sounded.
A fake video.
A false recording.
A missing camera file.
A child’s accusation.
Everything was happening too quickly.
And Vanessa knew exactly what she was doing.
She was creating confusion.
Because when people became confused, they stopped looking for the truth.
They started choosing the easiest answer.
Adrian walked toward the desk.
“Where did this video come from?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I found it on my phone.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Her expression shifted.
“It was sent to me.””
“By who?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Just a moment.
But Clara noticed.
“I don’t know.””
Adrian looked at her sharply.
“You don’t know who sent you a video accusing my daughter’s nanny of hurting her?””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“I was scared.””
“Scared enough to show it to me but not ask where it came from?””
Vanessa looked away.
Clara felt a small sense of relief.
For the first time, Adrian was questioning Vanessa.
Not defending her.
Questioning her.
Then Vanessa looked at Lily.
And everything changed.
“Maybe we should ask Lily.””
The little girl froze.
Clara immediately stepped in.
“No.””
Vanessa looked offended.
“Why not?””
“She’s been through enough.””
“But if she saw Clara doing it—”
“She didn’t.””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“That’s interesting.””
Clara narrowed her eyes.
“What?””
“You’re very sure about what Lily remembers.””
“Because I trust her.””
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Or because you taught her what to say?””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“Enough.””
The word echoed through the room.
Everyone stopped.
He walked over to Lily and picked her up.
The little girl immediately wrapped her arms around his neck.
“I’m sorry, Daddy.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“For what?””
“For making everyone fight.””
His face softened.
“You didn’t make anyone fight.””
“But Vanessa said—”
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“What did she say?””
Lily became quiet.
Too quiet.
Clara noticed immediately.
“Lily?””
The child looked down.
Vanessa’s voice became softer.
“See? She’s confused.””
“No,” Clara said.
Everyone looked at her.
Clara stepped closer.
“She’s scared.””
Adrian looked at his daughter.
And then he saw it.
The tiny movement.
The way Lily avoided looking at Vanessa.
The way her fingers grabbed onto his shirt whenever Vanessa spoke.
A child’s body could reveal what words could not.
“Lily,” Adrian said gently, “did Vanessa tell you not to say something?””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“Adrian, this is ridiculous.””
But Lily nodded.
A tiny nod.
Barely visible.
And it broke something inside Adrian.
“What did she tell you?””
Lily whispered:
“She said nobody would believe me.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Lily squeezed her eyes shut.
“She said Clara would get in trouble.””
Clara felt tears forming.
Not for herself.
For Lily.
Because the little girl had been carrying that fear alone.
Adrian turned toward Vanessa.
“Leave.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You’re serious?””
“Yes.””
“After everything I’ve done for this family?””
Adrian laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“You locked my daughter in a box.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“I did not.””
“Then explain the recording.””
“I already told you—”
“You told me nothing.””
The silence was brutal.
Vanessa picked up her purse.
But before she left, she stopped beside Adrian.
Her voice became quiet.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Adrian didn’t respond.
Vanessa looked at Clara.
“No matter what happens, you won’t be able to protect him from the truth.””
Then she walked out.
The door closed.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Clara noticed something.
The video.
It was still on the computer.
The image of her standing beside the toy chest remained frozen.
She walked closer.
“Adrian.””
He looked at her.
“Look at the timestamp.””
He frowned.
“What about it?””
“The video says this happened at 2:14.””
“So?””
Clara pointed at the screen.
“I wasn’t in this room at 2:14.””
Adrian stared.
“Where were you?””
“With Lily’s doctor.””
“What?””
Clara pulled out her phone.
“I had a video appointment scheduled because Lily’s allergies were getting worse. The doctor called me at 2:00.””
She opened her calendar.
Then her call history.
“I was talking for thirty-seven minutes.””
Adrian looked at the screen.
The evidence was there.
A record.
A timestamp.
Something real.
Clara looked at him.
“I never touched that toy chest.””
Adrian slowly nodded.
But before he could answer, the office door opened.
The security manager, Daniel Ross, stood there.
He looked nervous.
“Mr. Hart?””
Adrian turned.
“What is it?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I think you need to see something.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel walked inside.
“I checked the security system.””
“And?””
“The playroom camera wasn’t deleted.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
Daniel looked at the computer.
“It was replaced.””
The room went silent.
Clara felt her stomach drop.
“Replaced?””
Daniel nodded.
“Someone uploaded another video into the system.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Can you trace who did it?””
Daniel hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“The person who replaced the footage used your administrator account.””
Adrian froze.
“My account?””
“Yes.””
Clara looked at him.
“That means someone had your password.””
Adrian’s face changed.
Because suddenly this was no longer about a nanny.
It was no longer about Vanessa.
Someone had entered his private system.
Someone had access to his house.
Someone had planned this.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“There’s something else.””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
Daniel held out a small device.
“I found this hidden behind the playroom camera.””
Clara stepped closer.
A tiny black object sat in his hand.
“A recording device?””
Daniel nodded.
“It was installed recently.””
Adrian stared at it.
“When?””
Daniel looked down.
“Yesterday.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily, still in Adrian’s arms, suddenly whispered:
“Daddy…”
He looked at her.
“What is it?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“There was another person.””
Clara’s heart stopped.
“What person?””
Lily looked toward the empty doorway.
“The one Vanessa was talking to.””
Adrian went still.
“Vanessa was talking to someone?””
Lily nodded slowly.
“In the hallway.””
“When?””
“Before she put me in the box.””
Clara knelt beside her.
“Lily, sweetheart, what did the person look like?””
The little girl thought carefully.
Then she whispered:
“I couldn’t see their face.””
Everyone waited.
“But I remember one thing.””
“What?””
Lily looked at the small black recording device.
Her voice trembled.
“They were wearing the same ring.””
Adrian stared.
“What ring?””
Lily lifted her hand.
She pointed toward the desk.
Toward the video paused on the screen.
Toward the frozen image of the person who looked like Clara.
May you like
And then she said something that made the entire room go cold.
“The person in the video was wearing it too.””
