Chapter 2: The Voice Hidden in the Watch
For a moment, nobody in Adrian’s office moved.
The only sound was the soft hum of the security monitors.
The screens showed empty camera feeds from different parts of the mansion.
The garden.
The hallway.
The entrance.
Everywhere except the playroom.
The one place where the truth mattered most.
Adrian stared at the tiny blue light blinking on Lily’s smartwatch.
“Lily,” he said slowly, kneeling beside her, “what is that?””
The little girl looked down at her wrist.
“My watch.””
“I know, sweetheart. But why is it flashing?””
Lily swallowed.
“Because Clara told me it could help me if I ever got scared.””
Clara’s eyes widened.
“I told you it could call me if you needed help,” she said softly.
“I didn’t know it was recording.””
Lily nodded.
“I pressed the button.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Adrian, wait.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Her expression was careful.
Too careful.
“What?”” Adrian asked.
Vanessa forced a small smile.
“Before we listen to some random recording from a child’s watch, maybe we should think about how dangerous that is.””
Clara looked at her.
“Dangerous?””
“Yes,” Vanessa said.
“Children misunderstand things. They imagine things. A recording could be taken out of context.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“Vanessa.””
“I’m just saying we need to be fair.””
Clara almost laughed.
Fair.
That word coming from Vanessa felt impossible.
A six-year-old girl had been locked inside a toy chest.
And somehow, they were discussing whether the child’s memory was reliable.
Lily held onto Clara’s hand tighter.
“Daddy…”
Adrian looked down immediately.
“I’m here.””
“Please don’t be mad.””
His face softened.
“Mad at you? Never.””
Lily looked toward Vanessa.
“I didn’t do anything bad.””
The room became silent again.
Adrian’s expression changed.
Because Lily was not defending herself from being wrong.
She was defending herself from being blamed.
“Play the recording,” Adrian said.
Vanessa’s face lost some color.
“Adrian—”
“Play it.””
Clara connected the watch to the computer.
The tiny device appeared on the screen.
One audio file.
Created that afternoon.
No one spoke.
Clara clicked it.
At first, there was only static.
Then Lily’s voice.
Small.
Confused.
“Where are we going?””
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
A woman’s voice answered.
Vanessa.
“We’re just playing a game, sweetheart.””
Lily’s voice sounded nervous.
“I don’t want to play this game.””
A few seconds passed.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
“You need to listen to me, Lily. Your daddy has been too busy lately. You need someone who actually takes care of you.””
Adrian’s face tightened.
Clara looked at him.
He did not look away from the screen.
The recording continued.
“I’m not supposed to go in there,” Lily whispered.
Vanessa sighed.
“Don’t make this difficult.””
A sound followed.
A door opening.
Then Lily’s frightened voice.
“Why are you putting the toys on top?””
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
Adrian slowly stood up.
“Stop.””
Clara paused the recording.
“Adrian…”
His hand was shaking.
“Play the rest.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Adrian, this is insane. You don’t know if that’s edited.””
Clara turned toward her.
“Edited?””
Vanessa looked at Clara.
“Yes. Technology can do anything now.””
The confidence in her voice was almost convincing.
Almost.
But then Lily spoke.
“Daddy…”
Adrian looked at his daughter.
“What is it?””
Lily pointed at the computer.
“She said something after.””
Clara pressed play again.
The room listened.
Vanessa’s voice came back.
“You’ll stay here until you learn not to tell lies.””
Lily’s voice became louder.
“I’m not lying!””
Vanessa replied coldly.
“Everyone believes adults, Lily.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
The silence afterward was heavier than any argument.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
Not with anger.
Not yet.
With disbelief.
“Did you lock my daughter in a toy chest?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“Then why is your voice on that recording?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I mean—I was probably upset. Maybe I was trying to discipline her.””
Clara stared at her.
“Discipline?””
Vanessa looked at Clara.
“You wouldn’t understand.””
The words were quiet.
But cruel.
Clara felt something change inside Adrian.
Because that was the first time Vanessa stopped pretending.
The perfect smile disappeared.
The gentle voice disappeared.
For one second, everyone saw who she really was.
Adrian looked at Lily.
Then back at Vanessa.
“Leave the room.””
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
“I said leave.””
“Adrian, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice was low.
“You don’t get to explain this away.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears instantly.
It was almost impressive how quickly she changed.
“I can’t believe you’re doing this.””
Clara watched silently.
Because she had seen this before.
Not with Vanessa.
With people who knew how to turn themselves into victims when they were caught.
“You’re choosing her over me?”” Vanessa whispered.
Adrian looked confused.
“Her?””
Vanessa pointed at Clara.
“Her.””
Clara stiffened.
“What?””
Vanessa wiped away a tear.
“Isn’t it convenient? She finds Lily. She has access to the house. She knows about the watch.””
Adrian’s expression shifted.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Clara noticed.
And Vanessa noticed too.
The doubt was returning.
“No,” Clara said.
Vanessa looked at her.
“You told Lily about recording.””
“Yes, because I wanted her to have a way to contact me.””
“And only you knew about it.””
“That doesn’t mean I used it.””
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
“Doesn’t it?””
Adrian rubbed his forehead.
The room felt like it was closing in.
He wanted facts.
Not accusations.
Not emotions.
Facts.
Then Lily suddenly spoke.
“Clara didn’t put me there.””
Everyone turned.
The little girl’s voice was quiet but steady.
“She saved me.””
Adrian immediately walked toward her.
“I know, sweetheart.””
“No,” Lily whispered.
She looked at him.
“You don’t know.””
That sentence hurt him more than anything else.
Because she was right.
He had almost believed a story before hearing his daughter.
He had looked at the wrong person.
Lily reached toward the computer.
“There’s more.””
Clara looked at the watch.
The file was longer.
She had only played the first part.
The recording continued.
A few seconds of silence passed.
Then Lily’s frightened breathing.
Then Vanessa again.
“Your father needs to understand something.””
“What?””
“He needs to know people who work for him can’t control this family.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
The recording continued.
Vanessa said:
“Your father listens to Clara too much.””
Clara felt cold.
Because this was not about Lily.
Not completely.
It was about control.
Vanessa continued.
“She thinks she belongs here.””
Lily replied softly:
“Clara is nice.””
Vanessa laughed.
“She’s paid to be nice.””
Then came the sound of the toy chest opening.
The sound of toys moving.
The sound of Lily crying.
And finally—
A loud click.
The lock.
Adrian closed his eyes.
His daughter had been trapped.
By someone he planned to marry.
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate answer.
Her perfect explanation was gone.
Her carefully prepared story had collapsed.
But then something unexpected happened.
Vanessa smiled.
Not a kind smile.
Not a sad smile.
A dangerous one.
“You really think this recording changes everything?””
Adrian stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa walked slowly toward the desk.
“Do you really think I would leave evidence behind if I was planning something?””
Clara felt a chill.
“Adrian…”
Vanessa reached into her purse.
She pulled out her phone.
And placed it on the desk.
“I think you should watch this too.””
Adrian frowned.
“What is it?””
Vanessa unlocked the screen.
A video appeared.
And on that video was Clara.
Standing inside the same playroom.
Holding the toy chest.
The timestamp was from earlier that day.
Clara’s face went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Is it?””
Adrian looked at the screen.
The video began playing.
And within seconds, everyone in the room saw something that made Clara stop breathing.
Because the person standing beside the toy chest looked exactly like her.
But she knew one thing.
She had never done what the video showed.
May you like
And if that footage was real…
Someone had just created a lie even bigger than Vanessa’s.
