Chapter 8: The Marriage Daniel Forgot
Daniel stared at the marriage certificate.
Then he laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because his mind refused to accept it.
“No.””
Thomas said nothing.
Daniel shook his head harder.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Naomi looked between them.
“Daniel?””
He didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed locked on the paper.
“This isn’t real.””
Thomas placed the document on the table.
“It is.””
“No.””
“You signed it.””
Daniel stepped back.
“I would remember.””
Thomas’s expression softened.
“That’s exactly why I kept searching.””
Naomi felt a knot forming in her stomach.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked at her.
“Daniel was not supposed to remember.””
The room went silent.
Caleb held onto Naomi’s hand.
“Mom?””
She looked down.
“Go upstairs for a minute, sweetheart.””
“But—”
“Please.””
He looked scared.
Naomi forced a smile.
“I’m right here.””
Slowly, Caleb walked upstairs.
Naomi waited until she heard his bedroom door close.
Then she turned.
“Explain.””
Thomas took a deep breath.
“Years ago, before you met Daniel, he was married.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I wasn’t.””
“You were.””
“How?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Because Margaret made sure you forgot.””
Naomi felt cold.
“She erased his memory?””
Thomas shook his head.
“Not completely.””
“Then what?””
“Trauma. Medication. Manipulation.””
Daniel stared.
“I don’t understand.””
Thomas looked at him.
“You were involved in an accident.””
Daniel went still.
“What accident?””
“A car accident.””
“When?””
“Almost nine years ago.””
Naomi looked at Daniel.
Nine years.
Before they met.
Thomas continued.
“You survived. But you lost parts of your memory.””
Daniel touched his forehead.
“I was told I had no family.””
Thomas nodded.
“That was what Margaret wanted you to believe.””
Naomi’s eyes narrowed.
“So she found him after the accident.””
“Yes.””
“And married him?””
Thomas nodded.
“She inserted herself into his life when he was vulnerable.””
Daniel sat down.
His face was empty.
Like his entire identity had been pulled apart.
“I don’t remember.””
Thomas looked at him.
“I know.””
Naomi walked to the window.
Everything she thought she knew about Daniel was changing.
She had spent months believing he chose Margaret.
Believing he abandoned Caleb.
Believing he betrayed their family.
But now there was another possibility.
A darker one.
That Daniel had been manipulated long before she entered his life.
Still…
A question remained.
“Even if this is true…”
Everyone looked at Naomi.
She turned around.
“He still let Caleb suffer.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
The truth hurt.
Because no explanation could erase that.
“I know.””
His voice was quiet.
“I know.””
Naomi looked at him.
“You saw him sleeping there.””
Daniel nodded.
“I did.””
“And you did nothing.””
A tear appeared in his eyes.
“I was wrong.””
The apology came too late.
But it was real.
Naomi could see that.
And somehow, that made everything harder.
Because anger was easier than forgiveness.
Thomas opened another folder.
“There’s more.””
Naomi looked at him.
“What else?””
“Margaret’s entire plan.””
Daniel looked up.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“Why didn’t you stop her?””
Thomas looked away.
“Because I didn’t know how deep it went.””
Naomi crossed her arms.
“Show me.””
Thomas removed several documents.
“The first thing Margaret wanted was control of the house.””
Naomi nodded.
“We know.””
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“The house was never the final goal.””
Daniel frowned.
“Then what was?””
Thomas placed a document on the table.
“This.””
Naomi picked it up.
A trust agreement.
Her father’s name.
Caleb’s name.
And a sealed section.
“What is this?””
“Your father’s hidden trust.””
Naomi read carefully.
The words were complicated.
But one sentence stood out.
*The beneficiary will receive access upon discovery of concealed evidence.*
Naomi looked up.
“Evidence?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father discovered financial crimes connected to several people.””
Daniel stared.
“Margaret?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
“That’s what I believe.””
Naomi looked at him.
“You believe?””
Thomas sighed.
“I need to be careful.””
“Why?””
“Because some of the evidence disappeared.””
Naomi understood.
“Someone destroyed it.””
“Yes.””
“And you think Margaret did it?””
Thomas looked at the documents.
“I think she was involved.””
A sound came from upstairs.
A small cry.
Naomi immediately turned.
“Caleb?””
She ran.
Everyone followed.
They found him standing beside his bed.
Holding a small wooden box.
His face was confused.
“I found this under my mattress.””
Naomi froze.
Under his mattress.
The place where he had been forced to sleep.
The place nobody thought mattered.
She walked slowly toward him.
“Give it to me.””
Caleb handed her the box.
It was old.
Dusty.
And locked.
Thomas stepped closer.
“That’s your father’s handwriting.””
Naomi looked.
A tiny symbol was carved into the wood.
The same symbol from the documents.
Her father’s mark.
Daniel whispered:
“What’s inside?””
Naomi shook the box gently.
Something moved.
A key.
Thomas looked alarmed.
“Where did Caleb find this?””
He pointed.
“Under the bed.””
Naomi looked around the room.
Her eyes stopped.
The floorboard near the bed was slightly raised.
She knelt.
With Daniel’s help, they moved it.
Underneath was a hidden compartment.
Inside was another envelope.
Naomi’s hands trembled as she opened it.
The handwriting was familiar.
Her father’s.
*Naomi,*
*If you are reading this, then the danger I feared has already reached our family.*
She stopped.
Daniel looked over her shoulder.
Thomas went pale.
Naomi continued.
*I need you to understand something. The person trying to take this house is not after the property.*
Her heart raced.
The next line was worse.
*They are after the truth about Daniel.*
Daniel stepped back.
“What?””
Naomi kept reading.
*Years ago, Daniel was involved in something he does not remember. Someone erased his memories because he witnessed something they wanted hidden.*
Daniel covered his mouth.
Thomas whispered:
“Your father knew.””
Naomi continued.
*Margaret is not the beginning of this story. She is only a piece of it.*
A chill moved through the room.
Then the final sentence.
The sentence that changed everything.
*The person you should fear most is the one who convinced Daniel he was alone.*
Naomi lowered the letter.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
Margaret had not created the damage.
She had used damage that already existed.
That night, Naomi stayed awake beside Caleb.
She watched him sleep.
The same way she had done when he was a baby.
But now she was terrified.
Not for herself.
For him.
A quiet knock came at the door.
She looked up.
Daniel stood there.
“Can I come in?””
Naomi hesitated.
Then nodded.
He sat on the chair beside the bed.
For a while, neither spoke.
Finally, Daniel whispered:
“I don’t deserve forgiveness.””
Naomi looked at him.
“No.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“But Caleb deserves the truth.””
Daniel looked at their son.
“Yes.””
“And he deserves a father who protects him.””
A tear rolled down Daniel’s face.
“I know.””
Naomi looked away.
“I don’t know if I can trust you.””
“I understand.””
“But I need you to help me find out what happened.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I will.””
A long silence.
Then his phone buzzed.
Both of them froze.
Daniel looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
One message.
A photo.
Naomi saw it before he could hide it.
Her blood ran cold.
It was a picture of Thomas.
Taken outside the house.
But the timestamp was from earlier that evening.
Before Thomas arrived.
Under the photo was a message.
*“You found the wrong enemy.””*
Another message appeared.
*“Ask Naomi why her father never trusted Thomas Reed.””*
Naomi stared.
Thomas.
Again.
The same name.
The same mystery.
Then a final message appeared.
*“The person who knows the truth is still inside the house.””*
The lights suddenly went out.
From downstairs came the sound of glass breaking.
Daniel stood.
Naomi grabbed Caleb.
And from the darkness below…
May you like
someone whispered her name.
“Naomi…”
