Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Documents

Daniel dropped the phone.

It hit the wooden floor with a sharp crack.

Nobody moved.

Not Naomi.

Not Caleb.

Not even Margaret.

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the faint buzzing of the overhead light.

Naomi stared at Daniel.

“What did he say?””

Daniel looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.

“Nothing.””

But his voice betrayed him.

Naomi stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

He looked away.

“Nothing happened.””

The answer was too fast.

Too defensive.

Caleb held onto Naomi’s hand.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked at his son.

And something in his face changed.

Guilt.

Real guilt.

Naomi saw it.

“Who was that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Who was that person?””

“I told you. Nobody.””

Naomi looked toward the phone on the floor.

“Pick it up.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“Pick up the phone.””

“Naomi—”

“Pick it up.””

Her voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

Daniel slowly reached down.

The call was still connected.

He lifted it.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“Mr. Carter?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“My name is Thomas Reed. I represented Naomi’s father before his death.””

Naomi froze.

Thomas.

She knew that name.

He had been her father’s closest legal adviser.

The man who helped her buy the house.

The man who told her to protect Caleb’s future.

“Mr. Reed,” Daniel said quietly, “how did you get this number?””

“That is not the question you should be asking.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Thomas continued.

“The question you should be asking is why your wife’s property documents were changed.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I don’t understand.””

Naomi stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he handed it to her.

“Mr. Reed?””

A pause.

Then the older man’s voice softened.

“Naomi?””

“Yes.””

“I thought you were dead.””

Her throat tightened.

“So did everyone else.””

A long silence followed.

Then Thomas said:

“Then you need to hear what happened after you disappeared.””

Naomi looked at Daniel.

“I’m listening.””

Thomas took a breath.

“Three days after you went missing, someone contacted my office.””

“Who?””

“Your husband.””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

Naomi slowly looked at him.

Thomas continued.

“He asked about transferring temporary control of the property.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Naomi stared.

“You did contact him.””

Daniel stepped back.

“I didn’t know what I was signing.””

The room went silent.

Thomas continued.

“He told me he needed access because you were gone.””

Naomi’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I was scared.””

The honesty surprised her.

But it didn’t erase the damage.

Thomas spoke again.

“Mr. Carter, you also asked whether someone else could inherit the property if Naomi was declared missing.””

Naomi felt a chill.

“What?””

Daniel looked up.

“No.””

Thomas continued.

“That question was asked from your email account.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Someone used my email.””

Margaret suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Everyone looked at her.

For the first time, she wasn’t calm.

She was angry.

“Hang up.””

Naomi slowly turned.

“Why?””

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“Because this man is manipulating you.””

Thomas heard her.

“Who is that?””

Naomi looked at Margaret.

“Margaret.””

A pause.

Then Thomas said something that changed everything.

“Margaret Lewis?””

Nobody spoke.

“Why is she there?””

Naomi’s heart started racing.

“You know her?””

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

That silence was terrifying.

Finally, he said:

“Yes.””

Margaret’s face went completely still.

“How?””

Thomas continued.

“She came to my office six years ago.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Six years?””

Naomi frowned.

“What did she want?””

Thomas answered carefully.

“She wanted information about the house.””

Naomi looked at Margaret.

“Before she even knew me?””

Margaret said nothing.

Thomas continued.

“She asked who the legal owner was. She asked about inheritance rules. She asked what would happen if Naomi had a child.””

Naomi felt her stomach drop.

Caleb moved closer.

“She knew?””

Nobody answered him.

But the silence did.

After the call ended, nobody spoke for nearly a minute.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Margaret.””

She looked at him.

“Explain.””

Margaret sighed.

Like she was disappointed.

Not guilty.

Disappointed.

“You’re really going to believe a stranger over me?””

Daniel stared.

“He knew your name.””

“That proves nothing.””

“He knew you went to his office.””

Margaret looked away.

“It was years ago.””

“Why?””

No answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why were you asking about Naomi’s house?””

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“Because I was curious.””

“Curious?””

“Yes.””

“That’s not normal.””

She laughed.

“Normal?””

Her voice became sharper.

“None of this is normal, Daniel.””

She pointed toward Naomi.

“Your wife disappeared.””

Then toward Caleb.

“You were left raising a child alone.””

Then back at him.

“And I was the only person who stayed.””

Daniel looked shaken.

But Naomi noticed something.

Margaret wasn’t denying everything.

She was changing the story.

That was what she did.

She didn’t fight facts.

She buried them under emotion.

That night, Naomi stayed in Caleb’s room.

The real one.

The one that had been taken away.

The furniture was still there.

But different.

The walls had been repainted.

His toys were gone.

His childhood drawings removed.

It looked like someone had tried to erase him.

Caleb sat on the bed.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Are we going to lose the house?””

Naomi looked at him.

“No.””

“But Margaret said…”

Naomi stopped.

“What did she say?””

Caleb looked down.

“She said if you came back, everything would be different.””

Naomi sat beside him.

“What else?””

“She said you left because you cared more about the house.””

Naomi closed her eyes.

That was the cruelest part.

Not the documents.

Not the lies.

The fact that Margaret had spent months rewriting the story inside Caleb’s head.

“Caleb.””

He looked at her.

“I never cared more about this house than you.””

“I know.””

“You do?””

He nodded.

“Because you came back.””

Naomi hugged him.

And for the first time since returning, she allowed herself to cry.

Quietly.

So he wouldn’t feel responsible.

Downstairs, Daniel stood in the kitchen.

Margaret poured herself water.

“You need to leave.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“I said you need to leave.””

Margaret smiled slightly.

“You’re choosing her?””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

“I’m choosing my son.””

The smile disappeared.

“After everything I did for you?””

Daniel stared.

“What did you do?””

Margaret placed the glass down.

“I kept this family together.””

“No.””

His voice was different now.

“I think you destroyed it.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“You’re forgetting something.””

“What?””

“You signed the papers.””

Daniel froze.

The reminder landed immediately.

The transfer document.

His signature.

The mistake he made when he was exhausted and afraid.

“You made your choice.””

“I didn’t know what it was.””

“That doesn’t matter.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What are you saying?””

Margaret smiled.

“I’m saying if I fall, you fall too.””

The threat was quiet.

Almost gentle.

And that frightened him more.

The next morning, Naomi woke up to find an envelope outside Caleb’s bedroom door.

No name.

No address.

Only three words written on the front.

*You deserve the truth.*

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph taken the day Naomi disappeared.

She recognized the place immediately.

The parking lot outside the hospital.

She remembered that day.

The fear.

The phone call.

The person who told her Caleb was in danger.

The reason she left.

But there was something in the photo she had never seen before.

A car parked across the street.

And standing beside it…

Margaret.

Naomi turned the picture over.

There was a message written on the back.

Her hands began to shake.

Because it wasn’t from Thomas.

It wasn’t from Daniel.

It was from someone who had been watching everything.

May you like

The message said:

*“Ask Margaret why she wanted you gone before Caleb was ever born.””*
