Chapter 7: The Man Who Held the Missing Piece

Thomas Reed stood in the garage doorway holding the original deed like it was a weapon.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Naomi stared at him.

The man who had helped her father.

The man who had protected her family’s legal documents.

The man she trusted enough to believe his warnings.

Now he stood in front of her with the one thing everyone had been fighting over.

The deed.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Thomas?””

The older man’s expression didn’t change.

“I was hoping you would stop before this.””

Naomi tightened her grip on the folder.

“You sent the messages.””

Thomas looked at her.

“No.””

“Then why are you here?””

“Because you were about to make a mistake.””

She almost laughed.

“A mistake?””

She pointed at the deed in his hand.

“My son was sleeping beside pet bowls.””

Thomas looked away.

For the first time, shame crossed his face.

“I know.””

“You knew?””

The words came out colder than she intended.

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“I knew something was wrong.””

Daniel stared.

“Something?””

“You have no idea how complicated this became.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“No. Explain it.””

Thomas remained silent.

“Explain why you had the original deed.””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“Because I was the one who protected it.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

Thomas walked into the garage.

“You think the safe was the only place the deed existed?””

Naomi frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“The document inside the safe was a copy.””

Silence.

Naomi looked at Daniel.

Then back at Thomas.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“My father told me that safe contained the original.””

“Your father wanted you to believe that.””

The sentence stopped her.

“Why?””

Thomas placed the deed on the workbench.

“Because your father knew someone was watching.””

Naomi felt a chill.

“Who?””

Thomas looked toward the house.

“Someone who had been interested in that property for a very long time.””

“Margaret.””

Thomas didn’t answer.

But he didn’t need to.

The garage door remained open behind him.

Cold air moved through the room.

Naomi looked at the deed.

“Where was this?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Hidden.””

“Where?””

“In my office.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Your office?””

Thomas nodded.

“After your father died, I kept certain documents away from public records.””

Naomi shook her head.

“You told me everything was safe.””

“It was.””

“Until it wasn’t.””

Thomas looked at her.

“I didn’t know Margaret had access to Daniel.””

Daniel flinched.

Naomi noticed.

“Access?””

Thomas sighed.

“That’s the part you don’t understand.””

He looked at Daniel.

“Margaret didn’t begin with Naomi.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked at him.

“She began with you.””

The garage became silent.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“She studied your weaknesses.””

“That’s not true.””

“She knew you were afraid of losing your family.””

Daniel said nothing.

“She knew you blamed yourself for everything.””

Thomas’s voice became quieter.

“And she used that.””

Naomi looked at Daniel.

She remembered the man he used to be.

The man who cried when Caleb was born.

The man who promised they would always protect their son.

Now she wondered how long he had been drowning before someone offered him a hand.

Even if that hand was poison.

Thomas reached into his coat.

He pulled out another envelope.

“This is why I came.””

Naomi didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

Thomas looked at Margaret’s empty chair through the garage doorway.

“Of who planned everything.””

Daniel stared.

“You have proof?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you show us before?””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“Because I was afraid.””

The answer surprised Naomi.

“You?””

Thomas gave a tired smile.

“I’m old, Naomi. I’ve seen what money can make people do.””

He handed her the envelope.

Inside were copies of emails.

Bank records.

And photographs.

Naomi flipped through them.

Then stopped.

A photograph.

Margaret.

Standing outside the hospital.

The same day Naomi disappeared.

But this time, there was someone else beside her.

Daniel.

Her fingers froze.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?””

Naomi showed him.

His face changed.

“I wasn’t there.””

Thomas spoke quietly.

“That photograph was taken after Naomi left.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why am I there?””

Naomi looked closer.

The image was grainy.

But it was clearly Daniel.

Standing beside Margaret.

Talking.

“You don’t remember?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Thomas watched him carefully.

“That’s because you were drugged.””

The words hit the room.

Naomi looked up.

“What?””

Daniel stared.

“What did you say?””

Thomas took a breath.

“The night Naomi disappeared, you were not thinking clearly.””

Daniel touched his forehead.

“I was tired.””

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You were poisoned.””

Nobody spoke.

The idea was too large.

Too impossible.

Naomi looked at Daniel.

“Do you remember anything?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I remember arguing.””

“With who?””

“Margaret.””

“When?””

“That afternoon.””

His breathing became uneven.

“She was angry.””

“About what?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Thomas looked at him.

“She was angry because you refused to sign the transfer documents.””

Daniel looked up sharply.

“I refused?””

“Yes.””

Naomi stared.

“What?””

Thomas nodded.

“The first version of the agreement required your signature.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“I don’t remember signing.””

“Because you didn’t.””

Thomas pulled out another document.

“The signature on the transfer papers was copied.””

Naomi took it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

There.

A difference.

A small inconsistency.

The handwriting looked similar.

But not identical.

Daniel sat down.

“She used me.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Naomi felt anger rising.

Not only toward Margaret.

Toward herself.

Because she had spent years believing Daniel betrayed them.

But now she wondered how much of it had been manipulated.

A sound came from inside the house.

A door closing.

Everyone turned.

“Caleb?””

Naomi immediately ran inside.

The others followed.

They found him standing at the bottom of the stairs.

Holding something.

His face was pale.

“Mom?””

Naomi rushed to him.

“What happened?””

Caleb looked at the paper in his hand.

“I found this.””

Naomi took it.

It was an old photograph.

A family photo.

But someone had written on the back.

Caleb’s small fingers trembled.

“I was looking for my backpack.””

Naomi turned the photograph over.

The writing was faded.

But readable.

*The child is the key.*

Her stomach dropped.

Daniel looked over her shoulder.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas went completely still.

Naomi noticed.

“Thomas.””

He didn’t answer.

“Thomas.””

Slowly, he looked at her.

“I was hoping you would never find that.””

The room went cold.

Naomi held the photograph.

“What is it?””

Thomas looked at Caleb.

Then at Naomi.

“Your father discovered something before he died.””

“What?””

Thomas swallowed.

“Caleb was not just the owner of the house.””

Naomi frowned.

“What are you saying?””

Thomas looked at the boy.

“The house was connected to a trust.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He stepped closer.

“Your father didn’t leave Caleb the property because he loved the house.””

Naomi stared.

“Then why?””

Thomas’s voice dropped.

“Because the house contains something someone has been trying to find for years.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

Thomas looked at Naomi.

“Your father left a hidden inheritance.””

Naomi’s heart raced.

“Money?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Thomas looked at the photograph.

“Information.””

A silence followed.

Then Thomas said the words that changed everything.

“Your father knew someone would come after Caleb.””

Naomi held her son closer.

“Who?””

Thomas looked toward the upstairs hallway.

And whispered:

“The same person who was in this house before Margaret ever arrived.””

Naomi felt a chill.

“Who?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then said:

“Daniel’s first wife.””

The world stopped.

Daniel went completely still.

“I never had a first wife.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Yes, you did.””

Daniel’s face lost all color.

“No.””

Thomas pulled out one final document.

A marriage certificate.

With Daniel’s name on it.

And beneath his name…

A woman Naomi had never heard of.

May you like

A woman whose signature appeared on every suspicious document.

*Margaret Lewis.*
