Thinking

Chapter 3: The Lie That Destroyed Their Family

Naomi felt the room become smaller.

The walls that had once held every birthday, every holiday, every quiet morning with Caleb suddenly felt like they were closing in around her.

She looked at Margaret.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at the document in her hand.

“Tell me what you think I did.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Margaret leaned against the doorway.

“I think Daniel deserves to know the truth.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What truth?””

Naomi watched his face.

The fear.

The uncertainty.

The way he looked at Margaret as if he was waiting for her to explain.

That hurt more than she expected.

Because for years, she had believed Daniel was the one person who would stand beside her.

The one person who would protect Caleb.

But now she realized he had been standing beside someone else.

“Daniel,” Naomi said quietly, “before you listen to anything she says, remember one thing.””

“What?””

“I disappeared because I was trying to protect our son.””

Margaret immediately laughed.

“Protect him?””

“Yes.””

“By leaving him?””

The words hit the room like a slap.

Caleb, standing at the end of the hallway, covered his mouth.

Naomi hadn’t noticed he was there.

“Caleb…”

But the little boy didn’t move.

He looked at Daniel.

“Dad…”

Daniel turned.

“Why did Mom leave?””

The question broke something.

Because it wasn’t angry.

It wasn’t accusing.

It was just a child asking why he had been abandoned.

Daniel looked away.

Naomi walked toward Caleb.

“I didn’t leave you.””

“But you weren’t here.””

“I know.””

“You said you wouldn’t leave.””

Naomi knelt.

“I know.””

Caleb wiped his eyes.

“I thought you didn’t want me anymore.””

Naomi’s heart shattered.

She pulled him into her arms.

“Never.””

Her voice cracked.

“Never think that.””

Margaret watched them silently.

Then she said something that made Naomi turn.

“You’re very good at making people feel sorry for you.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Margaret.””

“No, Daniel. You need to hear this.””

Naomi stood.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Then explain.””

Naomi stared at her.

“Fine.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Three days before I disappeared, I found out someone was trying to access Caleb’s trust documents.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“The documents connected to this house.””

Margaret’s face remained still.

But her fingers tightened slightly.

Naomi noticed.

“I didn’t know who it was at first.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I found messages.””

“What messages?””

Naomi looked at Margaret.

“Between someone and a lawyer.””

Silence.

Margaret’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Daniel noticed too.

“What lawyer?””

Naomi reached into the safe.

She removed an old envelope.

“I kept copies.””

Margaret’s eyes widened.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

Naomi opened the envelope.

Inside were printed emails.

“I found them after my father’s attorney called me.””

Daniel took the papers.

His eyes moved across the page.

The color drained from his face.

“What is this?””

Naomi answered quietly.

“Someone was asking how to challenge Caleb’s ownership rights.””

Daniel looked up.

“Someone?””

Naomi didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Everyone in the room already knew.

The silence lasted only a few seconds.

Then Margaret spoke.

“This proves nothing.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You were talking to a lawyer about the house?””

“I was asking questions.””

“About taking ownership?””

“No.””

Daniel held up the paper.

“It says you wanted to know if a child’s ownership could be overturned.””

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She stepped closer.

“I was protecting you.””

Daniel stared.

“Protecting me?””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward Naomi.

“She was hiding things from you.””

Naomi shook her head.

“Stop.””

“No. He needs to know.””

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“You thought you had a normal marriage. You thought you had a wife who trusted you.””

Daniel became silent.

“But Naomi had this whole secret.””

The word echoed.

Secret.

Naomi saw it.

The doubt returning.

The same doubt Margaret had been planting for months.

“She made sure this house could never belong to you.””

“That’s not true,” Naomi said.

“Isn’t it?””

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“Tell him.””

Naomi stepped forward.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

But Margaret continued.

“She bought the house before your marriage. She kept it separate. She planned everything so you would have nothing.””

Daniel looked at Naomi.

“Is that true?””

Naomi froze.

Not because of the question.

Because of the pain behind it.

“You think I would do that?””

“I don’t know anymore.””

The answer hurt.

More than anger would have.

Naomi took a step back.

“You really believe I would use you?””

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know what to believe.””

Caleb moved closer to his mother.

“Dad…”

Daniel looked at him.

And for a moment, Naomi saw regret in his eyes.

But then Margaret spoke again.

“Daniel, remember what happened after she disappeared.””

Naomi turned.

“What did you tell him?””

Margaret smiled.

“Nothing.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Naomi’s voice became sharper.

“What did you tell him?””

Margaret looked directly at her.

“The truth.””

“You don’t know the truth.””

“I know enough.””

Naomi’s hands curled into fists.

Because she understood.

Margaret had been preparing this.

Not for days.

For months.

Maybe longer.

She hadn’t just wanted the house.

She wanted to destroy Naomi’s place in the family.

Three months earlier.

Before Naomi returned.

Daniel sat alone at the kitchen table.

The house felt empty.

Too empty.

Caleb was upstairs.

Margaret placed a cup of coffee in front of him.

“You need to think about the future.””

Daniel stared at the cup.

“I’m not ready to think about anything.””

“You have a child.””

“I know.””

“You have bills.””

“I know.””

“And you have a house with legal problems.””

Daniel looked up.

“What legal problems?””

Margaret sat down.

“Naomi left without explaining anything.””

“She didn’t leave.””

Daniel’s voice was immediate.

“She’s missing.””

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He stood.

“You don’t get to talk about her like she abandoned us.””

Margaret stayed calm.

“I’m trying to help.””

“How?””

“The house.””

Daniel frowned.

“What about it?””

“I spoke to someone who understands these things.””

“Why?””

“Because if something happened to Naomi, you need control.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“You can’t raise Caleb while everything is tied up.””

“It’s Caleb’s home.””

Margaret looked at him carefully.

“Are you sure?””

Daniel said nothing.

“She put everything in his name.””

“Yes.””

“So you don’t actually own anything.””

Daniel looked away.

“That’s not the point.””

“It will be when someone comes after you.””

“What are you saying?””

Margaret leaned forward.

“I’m saying you need protection.””

Daniel was tired.

Scared.

Grieving.

And Margaret knew exactly when to speak.

She didn’t force him.

She didn’t threaten him.

She simply waited.

Until he was exhausted enough to listen.

Back in the office, Daniel looked at the papers again.

His hands shook.

“Why didn’t you tell me someone was trying to take the house?””

Naomi stared at him.

“Because I never thought it was you.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I trusted you.””

Margaret interrupted.

“And yet you hid everything.””

Naomi turned.

“You’re enjoying this.””

Margaret smiled.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I’m finally watching the truth come out.””

Naomi looked at the document.

The transfer papers.

The emails.

The missing pieces.

Then something caught her attention.

A small mark in the corner of the page.

A symbol.

One she recognized.

Her father’s old attorney used it on every official document.

But this copy had something different.

A second stamp.

One that wasn’t supposed to be there.

Naomi picked it up.

Her eyes narrowed.

“This document is fake.””

Everyone went silent.

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

Naomi turned the page.

“The signature might be real.””

She looked at Daniel.

“But the authorization stamp isn’t.””

Margaret’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Naomi walked toward her.

“I’m saying someone altered this document.””

Daniel looked between them.

“So who did it?””

Naomi stared at Margaret.

“I don’t know.””

Then the phone on the desk rang.

Nobody moved.

The sound cut through the silence.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Daniel finally picked it up.

“Hello?””

His face changed.

“What?””

Naomi watched him.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then Daniel slowly looked at her.

“It’s your father’s lawyer.””

Naomi froze.

“That’s impossible.””

The lawyer had died two years earlier.

Daniel swallowed.

“He says he has proof.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“What proof?””

Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.

“He says the person who tried to steal Caleb’s house…”

He looked at Margaret.

“…is not the person you think.””

The line went silent.

Then the voice on the other end said one sentence.

May you like

A sentence that made Naomi’s blood run cold.

“Ask Daniel why he was the one who gave me the order.””
