Chapter 5: The Woman Who Planned Everything

Naomi read the message three times.

Each time, the words felt heavier.

*Ask Margaret why she wanted you gone before Caleb was ever born.*

She sat on the edge of Caleb’s bed, holding the photograph so tightly that the corners bent beneath her fingers.

Before Caleb was born.

That part was impossible.

Margaret hadn’t been in their lives then.

Or at least, that was what Naomi believed.

She looked at the photograph again.

The hospital parking lot.

The same gray sky.

The same day that had changed everything.

For months, Naomi had replayed that day in her mind.

The phone call.

The panic.

The warning.

The stranger who told her someone was trying to hurt Caleb.

She remembered running.

She remembered leaving because she thought staying would put her son in danger.

But now there was another question.

Who had made sure she received that warning?

And why?

A floorboard creaked outside the room.

Naomi quickly hid the photograph.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

“You’re awake.””

She looked at him.

“So are you.””

He nodded.

Neither of them moved.

The silence between them felt different now.

Not the silence of two people who loved each other.

The silence of two strangers trying to remember when everything went wrong.

“Did you sleep?”” Daniel asked.

Naomi almost laughed.

“Did you?””

He looked down.

“No.””

She held up the photograph.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“So you recognize it.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Naomi.””

“Answer me.””

He stared at the picture.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I’ve seen it before.””

The room went cold.

“When?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Margaret had it.””

Naomi’s heart stopped.

“Why?””

“She said it was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I don’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

Her voice broke.

“You don’t know anything, Daniel.””

He flinched.

Because he knew she was right.

They went downstairs together.

Caleb was still asleep.

Naomi made sure of that.

Whatever happened next, she didn’t want her son hearing more adult secrets he never should have carried.

Margaret was already in the kitchen.

Sitting calmly.

Drinking coffee.

As if the house wasn’t falling apart around her.

As if she hadn’t spent months destroying a child’s sense of safety.

Naomi placed the photograph on the table.

Margaret looked at it.

And for the first time, her confidence disappeared.

Only for a moment.

But Naomi saw it.

“You know this picture.””

Margaret picked up her cup.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Then why did your face change?””

“It didn’t.””

“You’re lying.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Margaret.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“Why did you have this photo?””

Margaret sighed.

“I told you. I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She looked at Naomi.

“From her.””

Naomi stared.

“You’re still doing this?””

“Doing what?””

“Making me the villain.””

Margaret placed the cup down.

“You disappeared.””

“I was trying to protect my son.””

“You left your husband and child.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“Because someone told me Caleb was in danger.””

Margaret’s eyes flickered.

Daniel noticed.

“You knew about that?””

Margaret said nothing.

Daniel’s voice changed.

“You knew?””

“I heard rumors.””

“What rumors?””

“That Naomi was unstable.””

The word hung in the air.

Naomi felt something inside her go still.

“Unstable?””

Margaret shrugged.

“You were under pressure.””

Daniel looked confused.

“She wasn’t.””

“You weren’t there.””

“I was her husband.””

“And I was the one who stayed.””

Daniel looked away.

Naomi saw it again.

The manipulation.

The same pattern.

Margaret always returned to one thing.

She stayed.

She helped.

She saved.

And she used that debt to control people.

Naomi walked to the living room.

She opened an old drawer beneath the television stand.

Daniel watched her.

“What are you doing?””

“Looking for something.””

She pulled out a small box.

It belonged to her.

Or it had.

Before Margaret moved in.

Inside were old letters.

Medical records.

Photos.

And a notebook.

Daniel looked at it.

“What is that?””

“The notebook I kept during my pregnancy.””

Margaret’s expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because I wrote down everything.””

Naomi opened it.

The pages were worn.

She flipped through them.

Then stopped.

“There.””

She pointed.

A date.

Six months before Caleb was born.

Daniel looked closer.

“What am I looking at?””

Naomi turned the notebook toward him.

A name was written there.

*Margaret Lewis.*

Daniel froze.

“I don’t understand.””

“I met her before.””

Margaret stood suddenly.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Naomi smiled sadly.

“Finally.””

Margaret’s face tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

“I do.””

She looked at Daniel.

“I met Margaret when I was pregnant.””

Daniel stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because it was strange, but harmless at the time.””

Naomi looked at Margaret.

“She approached me outside the doctor’s office.””

Margaret said nothing.

“She knew my name.””

Daniel looked at her.

“How?””

Naomi turned the page.

“She said she was interested in the house.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“The house?””

“Yes.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“You’re twisting things.””

Naomi continued.

“She asked if I planned to leave it to my child.””

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“And what did you say?””

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“I said nothing.””

Naomi shook her head.

“You said something.””

She remembered that day.

The stranger with the expensive coat.

The polite smile.

The strange questions.

At the time, Naomi thought it was just curiosity.

She had been wrong.

Margaret had not been curious.

She had been studying.

“I told her the house would belong to my son.””

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“And then?””

Naomi looked down.

“She said something I didn’t understand.””

“What?””

Naomi’s voice became quiet.

“She said, ‘Some people are born with everything handed to them.’”

The room went silent.

Margaret laughed.

“You’re remembering things wrong.””

“No.””

Naomi looked at her.

“I remember because I thought it was such a strange thing for a stranger to say.””

Daniel walked away from the table.

His hands were shaking.

“All this time…”

Margaret looked at him.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

He turned.

“Did you know about the house before you met me?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You did.””

“I knew about the property.””

“How?””

“I told you. I was curious.””

“No.””

His voice became louder.

“You don’t spend years researching a house because you’re curious.””

Margaret stared at him.

Then something shifted.

The mask slipped.

“You really want the truth?””

Naomi watched carefully.

“Yes,” Daniel said.

Margaret smiled.

“Fine.””

She walked toward the window.

“My family knew Naomi’s father.””

Naomi frowned.

“What?””

Margaret continued.

“Years ago, my father worked with him.””

Daniel looked confused.

“So?””

“So I knew the value of this house.””

Naomi shook her head.

“That makes no sense.””

Margaret turned.

“It makes perfect sense.””

Her voice became colder.

“Your father built something valuable. He created a future for you.””

She looked at Caleb’s empty bedroom upstairs.

“And then you were going to hand it to a child.””

Naomi stared.

“That’s what this was about?””

Margaret smiled.

“Don’t pretend you’re shocked.””

“You wanted my son’s house.””

“I wanted what was wasted.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“You’re talking about a child.””

Margaret’s eyes moved to him.

“And you’re the reason I almost failed.””

The words slipped out.

Everyone heard them.

Especially Daniel.

“What?””

Margaret realized her mistake.

But it was too late.

Naomi stepped forward.

“Almost failed?””

Margaret said nothing.

Naomi picked up the photograph again.

“Who sent this?””

No answer.

“Who took this picture?””

Silence.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

Naomi stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Daniel looked up.

“It’s the police.””

The room went quiet.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression collapsed.

“No.””

Naomi grabbed his arm.

“What happened?””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“They found the person who sent the photograph.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

Toward Caleb’s room.

His voice barely came out.

“They said the person has been watching this family for years.””

A pause.

“And they found evidence that Margaret wasn’t the only one involved.””

Naomi felt a chill.

“Who else?””

Daniel looked at her.

Then said the name that made her blood run cold.

“Your father’s attorney.””

Naomi froze.

Because Thomas Reed had called them.

He had warned them.

He had helped them.

But now the police were saying he was involved.

And before anyone could react, Daniel’s phone received one final message.

A photo attachment.

A photo of Caleb sleeping beside the pet bowls.

Taken from inside the house.

The message underneath said:

*“You still haven’t found the real reason Naomi disappeared.””*
