Chapter 9: The Woman With Two Faces

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

The impossible stood in the hallway.

Two Emilys.

One beside Daniel.

One standing beneath the dim light near the entrance.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same voice.

Different expressions.

The Emily who had spent ten years beneath the mansion looked terrified.

The Emily in the doorway looked calm.

Almost relieved.

Daniel stared between them.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

“No.””

The word escaped him.

A whisper.

A denial.

A desperate attempt to force reality back into something that made sense.

Lily moved closer to him.

“Daddy…”

Daniel immediately wrapped an arm around her.

“Stay with me.””

The woman in the doorway smiled sadly.

“Daniel.””

His blood ran cold.

Because even the way she said his name was familiar.

The same gentle tone.

The same warmth.

The same person he had loved.

Emily stepped forward from beside him.

“Don’t listen to her.””

The other woman looked at her.

And smiled.

“Still pretending?””

Daniel looked at Emily beside him.

“What is happening?””

Emily’s face tightened.

“I tried to tell you.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I need the truth.””

The woman in the doorway laughed softly.

“The truth is something Emily has never been good at.””

Emily looked at her with anger.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Daniel turned.

“Who are you?””

The second Emily looked at him.

And for a moment, her expression softened.

“I’m the person who loved you first.””

The words made his stomach twist.

Daniel looked at the woman beside him.

“Emily?””

She looked away.

That small movement frightened him.

Because it suggested there was something she hadn’t told him.

Again.

The woman in the doorway walked into the library.

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“Still afraid of me after all these years?””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You should be dead.””

She smiled.

“You all keep saying that.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“You know who she is.””

Richard didn’t answer.

Daniel’s anger returned.

“Of course you do.””

He looked around the room.

“Everyone knows everything.””

His voice cracked.

“Except me.””

The second Emily stopped walking.

Then she looked at him.

“You’re right.””

Everyone turned.

She continued:

“That was always the problem.””

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“What?””

“You were never told because everyone thought they were protecting you.””

A pause.

“But the truth is…”

She looked at the people around him.

“They were protecting themselves.””

Silence.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The woman smiled.

“Thomas.””

His face changed.

Like he recognized something.

“You know.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

She tilted her head.

“You don’t remember me?””

Thomas stared.

Then slowly stepped back.

“No.””

His voice changed.

“You died.””

The woman smiled.

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“Who is she?””

Thomas looked at him.

And whispered:

“Your grandmother’s daughter.””

The room froze.

Daniel frowned.

“My aunt?””

Nobody answered.

The woman nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at Daniel.

“My name is Claire Harrington.””

Daniel stared.

“And you’re pretending to be Emily?””

Claire smiled.

“Not pretending.””

She looked at the woman beside him.

“She is.””

Daniel felt the room tilt.

“No.””

Emily immediately shook her head.

“Daniel, don’t believe her.””

Claire looked amused.

“You really don’t remember?””

Daniel looked at Emily.

“What?””

Emily’s eyes filled with fear.

Claire stepped closer.

“Ask her about the night she disappeared.””

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Tell me.””

Emily said nothing.

“Tell me.””

Still nothing.

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Emily.””

She finally spoke.

“I didn’t disappear the way you think.””

The confession hit harder than he expected.

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

Emily looked down.

“I left.””

Silence.

Lily looked up at him.

Daniel felt something break.

“You left?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The familiar excuse.

Again.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He stepped away.

“No more.””

Emily reached for him.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

His voice was broken now.

“You don’t get to come back after ten years and tell me you left to protect me.””

Claire watched silently.

Almost enjoying it.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

Emily whispered:

“I know.””

“You let Lily grow up without you.””

Emily looked at Lily.

Pain crossed her face.

“I know.””

Lily stared at her.

“Why?””

The question was so simple.

So innocent.

It destroyed everyone.

Emily began crying.

“Because if I came back…”

She looked toward Claire.

“They would have killed you.””

Daniel followed her gaze.

“Who?””

Emily looked at Claire.

“Her.””

Claire smiled.

“Finally.””

Daniel turned.

“What did you do?””

Claire walked slowly toward the table.

“I finished what your grandmother started.””

“What does that mean?””

“She created the system.””

Claire touched the old notebook.

“Richard maintained it.””

She looked at Victor.

“Victor expanded it.””

Then she looked at Daniel.

“And you were supposed to inherit it.””

Daniel stared.

“I never wanted it.””

Claire smiled.

“That’s why you were perfect.””

Daniel felt sick.

“You manipulated my entire life.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was terrifying.

“Why?””

Claire looked almost disappointed.

“Because power always corrupts people.””

She looked at him.

“I wanted to know if anyone could possess everything and still choose to destroy it.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You ruined lives for an experiment.””

Claire didn’t deny it.

“Sometimes progress requires sacrifice.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“You sound exactly like your mother.””

Claire smiled.

“And you sound exactly like you did thirty years ago.””

A sudden noise interrupted them.

The front gates.

A crash.

Then shouting outside.

Victor looked toward the window.

“The police.””

Richard frowned.

“No.””

Victor checked his phone.

His face changed.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“What happened?””

Victor showed him the screen.

A news alert.

A photograph.

A headline.

Daniel read it.

And froze.

*HARRINGTON INDUSTRIES CEO DANIEL HARRINGTON WANTED FOR FINANCIAL CRIMES AND ILLEGAL FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES.*

His face went pale.

“What is this?””

Claire smiled.

“The final step.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What did you do?””

“I transferred everything.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You transferred my company?””

“No.””

She looked directly at him.

“I transferred your crimes.””

The room went silent.

Daniel understood.

Someone had prepared this.

Evidence.

Documents.

A story.

Everything pointing toward him.

Victor whispered:

“She framed you.””

Claire smiled.

“Not exactly.””

She looked at Daniel.

“I simply made sure the world saw what the Harrington name always created.””

Daniel felt anger rising.

“You’re destroying me.””

“No.””

Claire stepped closer.

“I’m freeing you.””

Daniel laughed.

“By taking my life away?””

“By removing the only thing keeping you trapped.””

She pointed toward the family portraits.

“The Harrington empire.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You expect me to thank you?””

“No.””

Claire looked at Lily.

“I expect you to choose.””

Daniel followed her gaze.

A cold feeling entered his chest.

“Choose what?””

Claire smiled.

“Your daughter.””

A pause.

“Or the truth.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What did you do?””

Claire looked toward the hidden basement.

“Emily wasn’t the only person trapped beneath this house.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel felt his heart drop.

“What?””

Claire continued:

“There is one final room.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“No.””

Claire looked at him.

“Yes.””

Daniel stared.

“What is in that room?””

Claire smiled.

“The reason your grandmother built everything.””

The lights flickered.

Then went out.

A final message appeared on the wall.

Not from Claire.

Not from the system.

From someone else.

A sentence written in red.

Daniel stepped closer.

And read:

*THE FIRST HARRINGTON CHILD IS STILL ALIVE.*

Behind him, Eleanor gasped.

Because she knew exactly who it was.

And she whispered:

“No…”

Daniel turned.

“Who?””

His mother looked at him with terror.

May you like

Then said:

“Your sister.””
