Chapter 7: The Father Who Never Stopped Searching
Daniel did not recognize the feeling that moved through him.
It wasn’t anger.
Not exactly.
It wasn’t fear either.
It was something far more confusing.
A lifetime of certainty had disappeared in a single night.
The man standing in front of him was supposed to be a stranger.
A name from a photograph.
A ghost from a past that wasn’t his.
But something about him felt familiar.
The way he looked at Daniel.
The way his hands shook.
The way his eyes filled with emotion before he quickly tried to hide it.
It was the look of someone who had spent years missing something he could never replace.
Daniel tightened his grip on Lily’s hand.
“No.””
The word came quietly.
Thomas stopped.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Emily stepped forward.
“Daniel—”
“Don’t.””
His voice cut through the room.
He looked at her.
“You don’t get to explain this.””
Emily lowered her eyes.
For the first time since he had found her beneath the mansion, she looked less like a victim.
And more like someone carrying guilt.
Daniel looked back at Thomas.
“You’re telling me you’re my father?””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Daniel laughed.
A broken, disbelieving laugh.
“After thirty years?””
Thomas swallowed.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You don’t know how it sounds.””
His voice grew louder.
“You weren’t there when I learned my wife was dead.””
Thomas said nothing.
“You weren’t there when I raised my daughter without her mother.””
Silence.
“You weren’t there when I buried people who weren’t even dead.””
Thomas looked down.
Every word landed.
And Daniel hated that.
Because he wanted anger.
He wanted Thomas to fight back.
He wanted him to prove he was another liar.
But the man just stood there and accepted the pain.
“I tried to find you.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Every year.””
A bitter smile crossed Daniel’s face.
“And somehow you never found me.””
“I found you.””
The room went quiet.
Thomas continued.
“But I couldn’t reach you.””
“Why?””
Thomas looked toward Richard.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Richard’s face had gone cold.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You knew.””
Richard didn’t answer.
Daniel walked toward him.
“You knew he was alive.””
“Yes.””
The answer came without hesitation.
Daniel stared.
“How long?””
Richard remained silent.
“How long did you know?””
“Your entire life.””
Daniel stepped back.
The truth hurt more every time.
Richard had not just hidden one secret.
He had hidden everything.
Thomas spoke quietly.
“Richard took you because he believed I was a threat.””
Daniel turned.
“Took me?””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“I protected you.””
Daniel looked at him.
“From my own father?””
“From the world he was part of.””
Thomas shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
Richard looked at him.
“You were reckless.””
“I wanted to expose what you built.””
“And you would have destroyed innocent lives.””
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“No. I would have stopped you from destroying them.””
The two men stared at each other.
Decades of hatred stood between them.
Daniel looked from one to the other.
“So which one of you is lying?””
Nobody answered.
Because maybe that was the problem.
Everyone had their own version of the truth.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“What did you find?””
Emily stepped forward slowly.
“The records.””
“The records from the basement?””
She nodded.
“The ones showing what the Harrington family did for generations.””
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“And you knew about them?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you expose them?””
Thomas looked away.
“Because I tried.””
Daniel waited.
Thomas’s voice became quieter.
“And they took everything from me.””
A silence followed.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked at Eleanor.
She closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel turned.
“Mom?””
Eleanor wiped her face.
“Your father didn’t disappear because he ran away.””
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“Then what happened?””
Eleanor hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Richard had him declared dangerous.””
Daniel stared.
“He destroyed his reputation.””
Thomas nodded.
“He made everyone believe I was unstable.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“You did that?””
Richard’s face remained firm.
“I did what I had to do.””
Daniel’s anger exploded.
“You always say that.””
He pointed toward the room.
“Every person you hurt. Every lie you told. Every life you destroyed.””
His voice shook.
“You always had a reason.””
Richard looked at his son.
“And you think you would have done better?””
Daniel stopped.
Richard continued.
“You think you know what it takes to protect a family?””
Daniel said nothing.
“You built your company because I taught you how.””
“I built it despite you.””
The words were immediate.
Richard’s expression changed.
A flash of disappointment.
Then anger.
Before he could respond, Emily spoke.
“Daniel.””
Everyone turned.
Her voice was soft.
“There’s something else.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
Emily hesitated.
Then she looked at Lily.
Daniel noticed.
“What is it?””
Emily stepped closer.
“When I found the records, I discovered something about your birth.””
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“More?””
She nodded.
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
Daniel noticed.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Emily looked at him.
“The name on the photograph was not the biggest secret.””
She reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Daniel stared.
“Where did you get that?””
“Your father gave it to me.””
She looked at Richard.
The older man looked away.
Daniel took the envelope.
His hands felt heavy.
Inside was a letter.
Old.
Yellowed.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
He opened it.
The first line made him stop.
*To my grandson, Daniel Whitmore.*
He read silently.
Then his face changed.
Because the letter wasn’t from Thomas.
It wasn’t from Richard.
It was from the woman whose voice had filled the library.
The woman who claimed she created everything.
His grandmother.
The letter contained only a few sentences.
But they were enough.
*If you are reading this, it means the Harrington bloodline has failed to control you.*
Daniel looked up.
Thomas watched him carefully.
He continued reading.
*You were never meant to inherit the empire. You were meant to destroy it.*
His breathing slowed.
The next line made his hands shake.
*The reason Richard kept you hidden was not because you were his weakness.*
A pause.
*You were his greatest threat.*
Daniel looked at Richard.
“What does that mean?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Thomas did.
“Your grandmother discovered something before she died.””
“What?””
Thomas looked at him.
“She discovered you were immune.””
Daniel frowned.
“Immune to what?””
No one spoke.
Then Emily whispered:
“The system.””
Daniel looked around.
“This makes no sense.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“It will.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I’m done with secrets.””
He looked at all of them.
“No more half-truths.””
A sudden alarm sounded.
Everyone froze.
A red light began flashing above the library door.
Victor immediately looked toward the ceiling.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Victor’s face changed.
“The security system.””
Richard’s expression became serious.
“What about it?””
Victor looked at him.
“It activated.””
Thomas frowned.
“Who activated it?””
The mansion speakers crackled.
A voice came through.
Not the grandmother.
Not Richard.
A new voice.
Calm.
Young.
Familiar.
“Hello, Daniel.””
Daniel froze.
Because he knew that voice.
Everyone knew it.
It belonged to someone who had been standing beside him only hours earlier.
Someone who had helped him search the mansion.
Someone who had claimed to be on his side.
The voice continued:
“I’m sorry it had to happen this way.””
Daniel whispered:
“Sarah.””
A pause.
Then Sarah’s voice answered.
“Yes.””
The lights flickered.
The doors locked.
And Sarah said the words that made everyone in the room go silent.
“Daniel, you need to know the truth.””
A pause.
“I was never trying to save Emily.””
Daniel felt the blood leave his face.
Sarah continued.
“I was trying to stop her from telling you who really killed Thomas Whitmore.””
Thomas turned pale.
Daniel looked at Richard.
But Richard wasn’t looking at him.
He was looking at Emily.
Because Emily had gone completely still.
And she whispered:
“Oh my God…”
Daniel’s voice was barely audible.
“Who killed him?””
Sarah answered through the speakers.
“The person you trusted the most.””
The room went silent.
Then the speaker crackled again.
May you like
And Sarah said:
“Your mother.””
