Chapter 6: The Name That Was Stolen
Daniel stared at the photograph.
The world around him became strangely quiet.
The voices.
The footsteps.
The distant hum of the mansion.
Everything faded.
There was only one thing left.
The name written beneath the picture.
*Daniel Whitmore.*
Not Harrington.
Not the name he had carried his entire life.
Not the name attached to every achievement, every company, every headline.
Whitmore.
A name he had never heard spoken in connection with himself.
He looked up slowly.
“No.””
No one answered.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Tell me this is a lie.””
Eleanor’s face collapsed.
That was the answer.
And somehow, that hurt more than the photograph.
“Mom.””
His voice was quieter now.
“Tell me.””
Eleanor looked at the floor.
“I wanted to.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You wanted to?””
He held up the photograph.
“You had my entire life to tell me.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Her eyes lifted.
“Of losing you.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You already did.””
The words hit her.
Eleanor looked away.
Richard remained silent.
That made Daniel angrier.
“You knew.””
Richard looked at him.
“Yes.””
“You knew I wasn’t your son.””
“Yes.””
“And you still raised me?””
Richard’s expression was unreadable.
“I raised you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice trembled.
“You shaped me.””
The accusation hung in the room.
Richard didn’t argue.
Daniel looked at Victor.
“Did you know too?””
Victor hesitated.
That hesitation answered everything.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Another lie.
Another person.
Another piece of his life that belonged to everyone except him.
Lily moved closer.
“Daddy…”
Daniel looked down at her.
For a moment, he forgot everything else.
The secrets.
The mansion.
The betrayal.
She was still there.
His daughter.
The only person in the room who had never hidden anything from him.
He crouched beside her.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded, but her eyes were full of fear.
“Are you still my daddy?””
The question destroyed him.
Daniel pulled her into his arms.
“Yes.””
His answer was immediate.
“Always.””
Richard watched them.
Something unreadable crossed his face.
“You see?””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
“That is why I chose you.””
Daniel stood slowly.
“Chose me?””
Richard nodded.
“You were never supposed to know the truth.””
A cold feeling spread through Daniel.
“What truth?””
Richard looked toward the window.
“Your biological father was Thomas Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing.
But Eleanor reacted.
A small movement.
A flash of pain.
Daniel noticed.
“Who was he?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Eleanor whispered:
“He was someone who should have been protected.””
Daniel turned to her.
“But he wasn’t.””
Her silence confirmed it.
Richard walked toward the table.
“Thomas was brilliant.””
Daniel watched him carefully.
“And?””
“And he discovered what the Harrington family had built.””
The same phrase again.
The same hidden world.
“What did he discover?””
Richard looked at the notebook.
“He discovered that the foundation wasn’t just moving money.””
Daniel waited.
“It was collecting information.””
A chill moved through him.
“About who?””
“Everyone.””
The answer was simple.
Terrifying.
Richard continued.
“Government officials. Business leaders. Investors. Anyone powerful enough to threaten the Harrington empire.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s insane.””
“Is it?””
Richard looked toward the mansion around them.
“The walls you grew up in were built by people who believed knowledge was the ultimate weapon.””
Daniel looked at the family portraits.
All those years.
All those faces.
All those smiles.
A family legacy built on secrets.
“What happened to Thomas?””
No one spoke.
Daniel’s eyes moved between them.
“What happened?””
Eleanor’s voice broke.
“He disappeared.””
“When?””
“Before you were born.””
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
The baby.
Him.
A life he never knew existed.
Richard stepped forward.
“Thomas tried to expose the Harrington family.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“And you stopped him.””
Richard didn’t respond.
Daniel’s anger returned.
“You killed him.””
“No.””
Richard’s answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Daniel noticed.
“You knew what happened.””
Richard looked away.
“That was complicated.””
Daniel laughed.
“Everything is complicated with you.””
Before Richard could answer, the hidden door behind them slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
The library lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then went dark.
Lily gasped.
Daniel immediately grabbed her hand.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
A faint mechanical sound came from inside the walls.
Victor looked alarmed.
“What is that?””
Richard’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“No.””
Daniel noticed.
“You know this.””
Richard looked toward the ceiling.
“We need to leave.””
The lights came back.
But the library had changed.
The hidden passage was closed.
The door was locked.
And on the wall above the fireplace, words had appeared.
Not scratched.
Not written.
Projected.
*THE FINAL SUBJECT HAS AWAKENED.*
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?””
No one answered.
Then the speaker crackled.
A voice came through.
A woman’s voice.
A voice Daniel had never heard before.
“Hello, Daniel.””
Everyone froze.
Richard stepped back.
“No.””
The woman continued.
“I’ve waited a long time for this moment.””
Daniel looked around.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“You know me.””
Daniel frowned.
“I don’t.””
The voice softened.
“You knew me before you were Daniel Harrington.””
His stomach tightened.
The room became colder.
Eleanor whispered:
“Impossible.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You know who this is?””
She looked terrified.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Eleanor’s lips trembled.
Then she said:
“Your grandmother.””
Daniel stared.
“My grandmother is dead.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Because he knew.
He knew exactly what was happening.
The voice continued.
“Richard told you stories about my death.””
A pause.
“He told everyone.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“What is she talking about?””
Richard didn’t answer.
The voice continued.
“But he never told you the truth.””
The projector above the fireplace changed.
A photograph appeared.
An old woman.
Standing beside a young Thomas Whitmore.
Beside them was a baby.
Daniel.
The woman spoke again.
“Your father was not the first person to try to destroy the Harrington empire.””
Daniel stared at the image.
“And you are?””
The voice answered:
“I am the person who created it.””
The room went silent.
Richard looked toward the speaker.
His face was pale.
Daniel had never seen his father look powerless before.
“Why are you doing this?””
Richard whispered.
The woman laughed softly.
“Because you failed.””
A pause.
“You were supposed to control him.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Control me?””
The woman continued.
“But instead, you raised him to question everything.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?””
No answer.
Then the library door unlocked.
Slowly.
Everyone looked toward it.
The handle turned.
The door opened.
And standing on the other side was Emily.
Alive.
Free.
But she wasn’t alone.
Beside her was a man Daniel recognized from the photograph.
The man everyone said was dead.
The man who was supposed to have disappeared before Daniel was born.
Thomas Whitmore.
Daniel couldn’t move.
Emily looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel stared at the man beside her.
The man who looked at him like he was seeing his son for the first time.
Thomas stepped forward.
And said the words that shattered everything Daniel believed.
“Daniel…”
May you like
His voice shook.
“I’ve been trying to find you for thirty years.””
