Chapter 8: The Mother Who Chose the Lie

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The accusation hung in the air like smoke.

*Your mother.*

Daniel stared at the speaker.

Then slowly turned toward Eleanor.

His mother stood frozen beside the library door.

Her face had lost all color.

“Mom?””

The word came out differently this time.

Not with love.

Not with comfort.

With fear.

Eleanor looked at him.

And Daniel saw something he had spent his entire life avoiding.

Guilt.

Real guilt.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

Eleanor opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel took a step back.

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“No, you don’t get to stay silent.””

Lily watched from behind him, holding onto his jacket.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“Did you kill him?””

A painful silence followed.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Richard looked away.

And that was when Daniel understood.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except him.

Eleanor finally whispered:

“I didn’t want it to happen.””

Daniel stared.

“That’s not an answer.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

She swallowed.

“It isn’t.””

The room felt colder.

Victor stepped forward.

“Eleanor—”

Daniel immediately turned.

“Don’t protect her.””

Victor stopped.

Daniel looked around at all of them.

“You all did this.””

His voice shook.

“You all decided I was too fragile to know the truth.””

Nobody argued.

Because they couldn’t.

Daniel looked back at his mother.

“Why?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Because Thomas was going to destroy everything.””

Thomas laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“Still using that excuse?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“I was trying to protect my son.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“You were trying to protect the Harrington name.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What happened?””

No one answered immediately.

Then Thomas spoke.

“Tell him.””

Eleanor looked at him.

A silent conversation passed between them.

Years of anger.

Years of pain.

Finally, she nodded.

“Thomas discovered the foundation’s real purpose.””

Daniel already knew that part.

But he listened.

“He found records showing your grandfather had created a network.””

She looked at Daniel.

“A network designed to control people with information.””

Daniel said nothing.

“Thomas wanted to expose it.””

“And you stopped him.””

Eleanor’s face broke.

“I tried to convince him not to.””

Thomas looked away.

“She begged me.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And?””

“And I refused.””

The room went silent.

Thomas continued.

“I thought the truth mattered more than anything.””

His eyes moved toward Daniel.

“I still believe that.””

Daniel saw the pain in his face.

“But I didn’t understand what they were willing to do.””

Eleanor whispered:

“Thomas disappeared because Richard ordered it.””

Richard’s expression tightened.

Daniel turned.

“You ordered it.””

Richard looked at him.

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“Why?””

“Because Thomas was going to expose thousands of people.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You mean powerful people.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Richard believed he was protecting the world.””

He looked at Daniel.

“But people like him always believe that.””

A tense silence followed.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“But you.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“You were my mother.””

Eleanor began crying.

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He pointed toward the mansion.

“You let me grow up here.””

He looked at the portraits.

“You let me believe this family was something it wasn’t.””

His voice became softer.

“You let me believe you loved me because I was your son.””

Eleanor’s expression shattered.

“Daniel, you are my son.””

“Am I?””

The question hurt both of them.

Eleanor stepped forward.

“You are.””

Daniel backed away.

“Then why did you choose them?””

She looked down.

And for the first time, Daniel saw the truth.

Not the full truth.

But enough.

His mother had not been a monster.

She had been afraid.

And fear had made her do terrible things.

“I was given a choice,” Eleanor whispered.

Daniel stared.

“What choice?””

Her voice trembled.

“Thomas or you.””

Nobody spoke.

“I was told if Thomas exposed the Harrington system, they would come after everyone connected to him.””

She looked at Lily.

“They threatened you before you were even born.””

Daniel felt his anger weaken.

Only slightly.

“Who threatened you?””

Eleanor looked toward the ceiling.

Toward the hidden cameras.

“The person who created all of this.””

The speaker suddenly crackled.

Everyone froze.

A woman’s voice filled the room again.

“Still blaming me, Eleanor?””

Daniel looked up.

His grandmother.

The voice of the woman who had been controlling everything from the shadows.

The woman who should have been dead.

Richard stepped forward.

“Show yourself.””

A soft laugh echoed.

“You always were impatient, Richard.””

The library screen flickered.

A video appeared.

An elderly woman sat in a dark room.

Daniel recognized her immediately from the photograph.

His grandmother.

But she was alive.

Older.

Different.

Her eyes were sharp.

Cold.

“Daniel.””

Hearing his name from her mouth made him uncomfortable.

“I have waited a long time to meet you.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Why?””

“Because you are the only person who can end what I started.””

Daniel frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

“You will.””

The woman smiled.

“You were raised by the Harringtons.””

A pause.

“But you were born a Whitmore.””

Daniel felt everyone watching him.

“You are the only person who belongs to both worlds.””

Thomas looked at him.

“She’s talking about the inheritance.””

The woman continued.

“The Harringtons built power.””

She leaned closer.

“The Whitmores built knowledge.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“And you built a prison.””

The woman smiled.

“Good.””

A strange pride entered her voice.

“You question.””

Daniel stepped toward the screen.

“Why did you destroy my family?””

The woman tilted her head.

“Because families are the easiest things to control.””

Silence.

Daniel felt sick.

“You manipulated everyone.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was disturbing.

“Why?””

The woman looked at him.

“Because people only reveal who they are when they believe they have something to lose.””

Daniel glanced at Richard.

At Eleanor.

At Thomas.

At Emily.

Everyone had lost something.

The woman continued.

“Your father wanted to expose me.””

She looked at Thomas.

“Your mother wanted to save you.””

She looked at Eleanor.

“Richard wanted power.””

She smiled.

“And you…”

A pause.

“You were the experiment.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Emily suddenly stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her face was filled with horror.

“You said he was the key.””

The woman on the screen smiled.

“Yes.””

Emily looked at Daniel.

“What experiment?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel’s voice became sharp.

“What experiment?””

The woman spoke calmly.

“When you were born, I discovered something unusual.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“You had no loyalty to the Harrington name.””

A pause.

“No attachment to the empire.””

Another pause.

“You were the first person who could inherit everything and still choose to destroy it.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“You raised me to destroy my own family?””

The woman smiled.

“I raised you to prove whether power could be rejected.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You’re insane.””

The woman didn’t react.

“Perhaps.””

Then the screen changed.

A document appeared.

Daniel recognized the signature.

His own.

His breath stopped.

“What is that?””

Victor looked closer.

Then his face changed.

“Impossible.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Victor whispered:

“That’s the transfer agreement.””

“What transfer agreement?””

Victor looked at him.

“The one that gives ownership of Harrington Industries to whoever controls the Harrington bloodline.””

Daniel stared at the document.

“But I never signed that.””

The woman smiled.

“You did.””

A pause.

“When you turned eighteen.””

Daniel felt dizzy.

“I was eighteen.””

“Yes.””

“You tricked me.””

“No.””

Her smile widened.

“You signed it willingly.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

His father looked away.

Because he knew.

Daniel’s voice became barely audible.

“What did I sign?””

The woman answered:

“Everything.””

The lights suddenly went out.

A loud alarm began throughout the mansion.

Then a new sound.

Sirens.

Outside.

Victor looked toward the window.

“We’re surrounded.””

Daniel looked at him.

“By who?””

Victor’s face turned pale.

“The authorities.””

Richard frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Daniel.

“It isn’t them.””

A pause.

“It’s someone using them.””

The screen flickered one final time.

The woman’s voice returned.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

“Now you finally understand.””

The screen went black.

And from somewhere inside the mansion, a door opened.

A familiar voice called out.

“Daniel?””

Everyone froze.

Because the voice belonged to someone who had been missing all night.

Someone they thought was trapped.

Someone they thought needed saving.

Emily turned pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

A figure stepped out of the darkness.

And Daniel realized the nightmare had only just begun.

May you like

Because the person standing there was Emily.

But the woman beside him was Emily too.
