Chapter 1: The Sound Beneath the Marble
“Daddy… there’s a woman trapped under our house.””
Six-year-old Lily Harrington said it with such certainty that Daniel Harrington almost laughed.
Almost.
Because Lily was not the kind of child who invented stories for attention.
She was quiet. Observant. The kind of child who noticed when a flower in the garden had been moved or when the housekeeper changed the scent of the candles in the dining room.
So when she stood in front of him with pale cheeks and trembling fingers, Daniel stopped reading the documents in his hands.
“What did you say?””
Lily looked toward the hallway behind her.
“There’s a lady under the floor.””
The sentence sounded impossible.
The Harrington mansion was one of the largest private residences in the city. A stone fortress sitting behind iron gates and acres of perfectly trimmed gardens.
It had belonged to Daniel for nearly a decade.
He knew every room.
Every staircase.
Every hidden corner.
At least, he thought he did.
Daniel placed the papers down on his desk.
“Lily, sweetheart, what makes you think there’s someone under the floor?””
“She told me.””
His eyebrows tightened.
“She told you?””
Lily nodded.
“She said, ‘Please.’”
For a moment, Daniel simply stared at his daughter.
Then he stood.
“Show me.””
Lily grabbed his hand immediately.
The mansion was unusually quiet that afternoon.
The staff had finished cleaning the main hall, leaving the marble floors shining beneath the golden light from the enormous crystal chandelier above.
The hallway was so long that Lily’s footsteps echoed as she pulled her father forward.
Daniel looked around.
Everything appeared normal.
The portraits of past Harrington family members watched silently from the walls.
The expensive paintings.
The antique furniture.
The polished marble.
Nothing seemed out of place.
“Where did you hear it?”” he asked.
Lily pointed toward the center of the hallway.
“Right there.””
Daniel walked closer.
A large dark rug covered part of the floor.
He looked down.
“Are you sure?””
Lily frowned.
“Yes.””
She dropped to her knees.
“I was playing with my dolls, and then I heard something.””
She placed both hands against the marble.
“Like this.””
Daniel watched as his daughter pressed her ear to the ground.
For several seconds, there was nothing.
The silence stretched.
Daniel exhaled softly.
“Maybe it was the pipes, Lily.””
“No.””
Her voice was small but firm.
“It was a person.””
Daniel opened his mouth to respond.
Then—
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
The sound came from beneath them.
Daniel froze.
The faint smile he had been holding disappeared instantly.
Lily looked up at him.
“I told you.””
Neither of them moved.
The mansion suddenly felt different.
The familiar hallway no longer felt warm or safe.
It felt like it was hiding something.
Daniel slowly lowered himself onto one knee.
He placed his palm against the marble.
Nothing.
Then he heard it.
A whisper.
So faint he almost convinced himself it was his imagination.
“Help me.””
The color drained from his face.
He immediately stood.
“Lily, step back.””
His daughter looked confused.
“But Daddy—”
“Now.””
Something in his voice made her obey.
Daniel moved the rug aside.
The marble beneath it looked ordinary at first.
Then he saw it.
A thin line.
A perfect square outline.
His eyes narrowed.
He ran his fingers along the edge.
This was not a crack.
It was a door.
A hidden door.
Something inside his chest tightened.
“How long has this been here?”” he whispered.
Lily stepped closer.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel searched his memory.
Ten years.
He had owned this house for ten years.
He had renovated the west wing.
He had inspected the foundation.
He had walked through this hallway hundreds of times.
And yet, somehow, there was a section of the mansion he had never discovered.
Near the edge of the hidden panel was a small metal ring.
Daniel grabbed it.
It was cold.
Almost freezing.
He pulled.
At first, nothing happened.
Then the panel moved.
A low creaking sound filled the hallway.
The marble door lifted.
A wave of cold air rushed upward.
Lily covered her mouth.
Below them was darkness.
A narrow staircase descended beneath the mansion.
Not a basement.
Not a storage room.
A passage.
An old passage.
A single yellow light flickered somewhere deep below.
Daniel stared down into the darkness.
His mind raced.
Who built this?
Why was it hidden?
And who was the woman calling for help?
Behind him, Lily whispered:
“Daddy…”
Daniel turned.
Her eyes were fixed on the opening.
“She’s still down there.””
Another sound came from below.
A cough.
Then a weak voice.
“Please…”
Daniel felt a chill run through him.
He reached for his phone.
“I’m calling the police.””
But before he could unlock the screen, Lily spoke.
“She knows you.””
Daniel stopped.
“What?””
The little girl pointed into the darkness.
“She said your name.””
His heart skipped.
“What did she say?””
Lily looked frightened now.
“She said…”
The girl swallowed.
“She said, ‘Daniel, please don’t leave me here again.’”
The hallway went silent.
Daniel’s hand lowered slowly.
Because there was only one person in the world who could say those words.
One person who knew this mansion.
One person who had disappeared years ago.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
“That’s impossible.””
Lily looked up at him.
“Who is she?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Because buried beneath the fear was a memory he had spent years trying to forget.
A woman.
A promise.
A night that had changed everything.
And from the darkness below, the voice came again.
This time louder.
This time clearer.
“Daniel Harrington…”
Daniel stepped back.
The blood drained from his face.
Because the woman beneath the marble floor wasn’t a stranger.
She was the person he had watched disappear ten years earlier.
May you like
The person everyone believed was dead.
His first wife.
