Chapter 6: The Accident Nobody Explained

I almost closed the door.

Almost.

Every instinct told me to.

Daniel had already destroyed enough.

He had appeared out of nowhere.

He had reopened wounds I didn’t know existed.

But then I looked at Nia.

My daughter was standing behind me.

Listening.

Waiting.

And I realized something.

For years, adults had made decisions about her life without letting her know the truth.

I wasn’t going to become another person who silenced her.

“Come in.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Marcus.””

I ignored her.

Daniel stepped inside.

He looked uncomfortable.

Good.

He should have.

He had abandoned a child and walked back years later expecting answers.

We sat in the living room.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, I looked at him.

“Start.””

Daniel nodded.

“Before Vanessa met you, you and I knew each other.””

I frowned.

“We knew each other?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked at Nia.

“Because you were trying to protect her.””

My chest tightened.

“From what?””

“Me.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He looked at her.

“The truth comes out now.””

I stared.

“You were dangerous?””

He shook his head.

“I was young and stupid.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He looked down.

“I was involved with people I shouldn’t have been involved with.””

My anger grew.

“And you brought my daughter into that?””

“No.””

His voice became sharp.

“I left because I knew I was dangerous.””

Nobody expected that.

Not even Vanessa.

Daniel continued.

“When Nia was born, you were the one who helped Vanessa.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“You were my friend,” Daniel said.

“Friend?””

“Yes.””

I tried to remember.

Nothing.

“You and Vanessa were already close.””

My head started hurting.

“Why don’t I remember?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Because of the accident.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me.””

He nodded.

“You found out I was involved with dangerous people. You found documents. Evidence.””

“What documents?””

“That I was being used.””

I frowned.

“This makes no sense.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

I turned.

“Knows what?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn’t want this.””

My voice became cold.

“You keep saying that.””

Daniel continued.

“You were driving that night.””

The room went completely still.

I looked at Vanessa.

“No.””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

My body felt numb.

“What night?””

“The accident.””

I stared.

“She was driving?””

Vanessa nodded.

“We argued.””

“About what?””

She covered her face.

“About Nia.””

I felt something break.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel answered.

“You found out Vanessa planned to disappear with Nia.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She wanted to leave everything behind.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“That’s what happened.””

I stood.

“Enough.””

My voice shook.

“I need the truth.””

Daniel nodded.

“You discovered she was planning to take Nia away. You confronted her. You said you were going to take responsibility for Nia.””

My throat tightened.

“And?””

“The car crashed.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You were driving.””

“Yes.””

“Were you hurt?””

“Yes.””

“Was I?””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

I waited.

“What happened after?””

She whispered:

“You forgot.””

The words felt heavier than anything before.

I stepped back.

“You knew I lost my memory.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe…”

She started crying.

“I thought it was a second chance.””

I stared at her.

“A second chance?””

She looked at me.

“I thought if you didn’t remember the pain, we could start over.””

I laughed.

A broken laugh.

“You didn’t give me a second chance.””

I pointed upstairs.

“You erased the first one.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Nia quietly said:

“Dad.””

I turned.

She was crying.

“But you remembered me.””

I looked at her.

“I did?””

She nodded.

“You always did.””

A small smile appeared.

“When you came home from the hospital, you forgot Mom.””

My heart stopped.

“But you remembered me.””

The room blurred.

“What?””

“You looked at everyone like strangers.””

She wiped her tears.

“But when you saw me…”

She smiled through crying.

“You picked me up.””

I closed my eyes.

A memory came rushing back.

A little girl.

A hospital hallway.

Tiny arms around my neck.

A voice whispering:

“Daddy.””

I opened my eyes.

I was crying.

I didn’t even notice.

Nia ran to me.

I held her.

For the first time in years, I remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

Behind us, Daniel spoke quietly.

“There’s still one thing you don’t know.””

I didn’t let go of Nia.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“The accident wasn’t the reason you forgot.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then what was?””

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“I found this after the crash.””

I opened it.

Inside was a medical report.

My hands shook as I read the final line.

*Memory loss was not caused by trauma alone. Possible medication interference should be investigated.*

I looked up.

Slowly.

“Medication?””

Daniel nodded.

“Marcus…”

He looked at Vanessa.

“She was already giving you something before the accident.””

Vanessa stood suddenly.

“Don’t.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Her face collapsed.

May you like

And for the first time, she finally said the words I had been waiting for.

“Because I was afraid you would remember.””
