Chapter 13: The Truth That Was Buried With Him

I read my father’s letter until the words blurred.

Not because I couldn’t understand them.

Because I didn’t want to.

The person you trust most is the person who caused the accident.

For years, I had searched for the person who stole my memories.

The person who made my daughter feel like a stranger in her own home.

The person who changed documents and erased pieces of my life.

I thought the answer would be simple.

A villain.

Someone easy to hate.

But the truth was worse.

The person had a familiar face.

A familiar voice.

Someone who had slept beside me.

Someone who had called me family.

I placed the letter back in the box.

Then I noticed something else.

A small envelope underneath the documents.

My name was written on it.

Not Marcus.

Not my full name.

Just:

*For Dad.*

My hands stopped moving.

My father had written that?

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of my father.

Of Nia.

A baby.

Wrapped in a pink blanket.

On the back was a date.

The day she was born.

Then another note.

*I know what happened. I know who she belongs to. I know what they are trying to take from you.*

My breathing changed.

They.

Not she.

They.

I pulled out the flash drive.

I had no idea if it still worked.

But I needed to know.

When I got home, I went straight to my office.

I locked the door.

I plugged it in.

There were only three files.

The first was a video.

My father appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably him.

“Marcus,” he said.

I froze.

Hearing his voice after so long felt impossible.

“If you are watching this, something happened.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“Something I hoped you would never have to deal with.””

I sat down.

“The people involved will try to convince you that they were protecting you.””

He paused.

“They were protecting themselves.””

My father took a breath.

“Years ago, I discovered financial crimes connected to my company. I started investigating quietly.””

The screen flickered.

“I found that someone close to me had been moving money.””

My stomach tightened.

“Someone I trusted.””

He looked away.

“Someone your mother considered family.””

Olivia.

I knew.

“I confronted them.””

My father continued.

“They threatened me.””

The room felt colder.

“Then they threatened you.””

I leaned closer.

“What?””

The video continued.

“They knew about Vanessa. They knew about Nia.””

My heart stopped.

“They knew that child was your daughter before you did.””

I covered my mouth.

My father knew.

He knew everything.

“The night of the accident, you discovered the truth.””

The video paused for a second.

“You confronted Vanessa because she was trying to leave with Nia.””

I frowned.

That was different from what Daniel said.

My father continued.

“But Vanessa was not the person who planned the accident.””

I stopped breathing.

The video showed him looking directly into the camera.

“Marcus, if Vanessa caused the crash, it was because someone forced her.””

My entire body went still.

What?

“She was being manipulated.””

I replayed the sentence.

Again.

Again.

Not the person who planned it.

The person who caused it.

There was a difference.

The second file contained documents.

Emails.

Messages.

Financial records.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Olivia Hart.

My hands shook.

The third file was audio.

I clicked it.

A conversation began.

Olivia’s voice.

“She’s going to tell him.””

Vanessa’s voice.

“I can’t lose him.””

Olivia.

“Then make sure he forgets.””

A silence.

Then Vanessa.

“I don’t want to hurt him.””

Olivia.

“You don’t have a choice.””

The recording ended.

I sat frozen.

Because suddenly the story changed.

Vanessa had lied.

She had hurt us.

But someone had been controlling the situation from the shadows.

I found Vanessa in the kitchen.

She looked at my face.

And immediately knew.

“You found it.””

I nodded.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked down.

“Because I thought you would never forgive me.””

“You’re right.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.””

“But not for the reason you think.””

She looked confused.

I placed the flash drive on the table.

“You were scared.””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

“You were manipulated.””

Her face changed.

“You know?””

“I know enough.””

She sat down.

For the first time, I saw the full weight of what she carried.

“Olivia threatened me.””

I listened.

“She knew about your father’s investigation. She knew Daniel’s history. She knew everything.””

“And you?””

“I wanted to tell you.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

She looked at me.

“Because Olivia told me she would destroy you.””

“How?””

“She said she would make sure you lost everything.””

I looked away.

“And the accident?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I didn’t plan it.””

I believed her.

Not because I trusted her completely.

Because now I understood fear.

“What happened?””

She whispered:

“That night, Olivia followed us.””

I looked at her.

“She was there?””

“Yes.””

“She caused the crash?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She grabbed the steering wheel.””

My stomach dropped.

“She?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I was trying to get away.””

The room went silent.

“She wanted Nia gone.””

I closed my eyes.

The little girl upstairs.

The child who thought she was the reason everything went wrong.

None of it was her fault.

None.

Then Vanessa said something else.

Something I wasn’t ready for.

“She knew something else.””

“What?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“She knew Nia had inherited something from your father.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“A key.””

“A key?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your father gave it to Nia before he died.””

I stared.

“Nia was a baby.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

“Because he trusted her.””

That made no sense.

Until I remembered the box.

The documents.

The evidence.

A key.

I ran upstairs.

“Nia?””

She looked up.

“Dad?””

“Do you have anything from Grandpa?””

She frowned.

“Grandpa?””

“Anything.””

She thought.

Then slowly walked to her room.

She opened a drawer.

From underneath old drawings, she pulled out a small necklace.

My heart stopped.

A tiny metal key hung from it.

I touched it.

And immediately recognized it.

Because my father had been wearing the matching one for years.

Nia looked at me.

“What is it?””

I stared at the key.

“The last piece.””

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Olivia’s voice came through.

“You found it.””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

A quiet laugh.

“Because I know everything.””

My grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

She ignored the question.

“Marcus, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Nia was never the secret.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Then what was?””

May you like

Olivia whispered:

“The secret was that your father chose her to expose me.””
