Chapter 12: The Enemy We Never Saw
I called Daniel immediately.
He answered after one ring.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stood by the window.
“Explain.””
A pause.
Then:
“Vanessa told you about the accident?””
“Yes.””
“She told you she was afraid you would leave?””
“Yes.””
“She didn’t tell you everything.””
I closed my eyes.
“Who wanted Nia gone?””
Daniel was silent.
Too silent.
“Daniel.””
“It was my fault.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Tell me now.””
He took a breath.
“Before Nia was born, I made mistakes.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone in this story had a different version of that sentence.
“What kind of mistakes?””
“I owed people money.””
I waited.
“Dangerous people.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
“People who believed Nia’s birth could expose them.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Nia’s birth was connected to a case.””
I felt a chill.
“What case?””
“Her mother’s family.””
I frowned.
“Vanessa?””
“No.””
A pause.
“Your family.””
I went still.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
I didn’t understand.
“Explain.””
Daniel sighed.
“Before you met Vanessa, your father was involved in illegal business.””
My heart dropped.
My father.
The man who taught me honesty.
The man I had spent my life trying to become.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
I looked around the room.
Everything felt unstable again.
“Why would Nia matter?””
“Because your father left evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
“Financial crimes.””
I said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“Nia was born around the same time the investigation started.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does when you know the rest.””
“What rest?””
“Your father wasn’t the only one involved.””
My voice lowered.
“Who else?””
Daniel answered:
“Olivia.””
I froze.
“Vanessa’s sister?””
“Yes.””
The room went cold.
“She was connected to your father’s company.””
I stood.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
“Because people were protecting themselves.””
I thought about Vanessa.
The lies.
The records.
The accident.
The missing memories.
“How does this connect to Nia?””
Daniel said:
“Your father discovered something.””
“What?””
“He discovered that someone close to him was moving money.””
I swallowed.
“And?””
“He planned to expose them.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“Olivia.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
“I know.””
“You’re saying Olivia tried to hide Nia because she knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because if you remembered everything, you would have found the evidence.””
I walked into the hallway.
My mind raced.
The accident.
The medication.
The lies.
All connected.
“Where is the evidence?””
Daniel was quiet.
“Marcus.””
“Where?””
“It was hidden.””
“Where?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Your house.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The original evidence was hidden before the accident.””
I looked around.
My house.
The place where I had lived for years.
The place where my daughter had been punished.
The place filled with secrets.
“Where?””
Daniel whispered:
“Somewhere only you would know.””
I ended the call.
Then I remembered.
A memory.
A small box.
A hiding place.
My father’s old study.
I drove there immediately.
The room had barely changed.
Old books.
Old furniture.
Old photographs.
I searched everything.
Nothing.
Then I saw it.
A loose wooden panel behind the bookshelf.
My hands shook as I pulled it open.
Inside was a small metal box.
I opened it.
Documents.
Photographs.
A flash drive.
And one handwritten letter.
My father’s handwriting.
I unfolded it.
*Marcus,*
*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.*
My heart raced.
*The people around you are not all who they appear to be.*
I kept reading.
Then I saw the final line.
The line that changed everything.
*The person you trust most is the person who caused the accident.*
I dropped the letter.
May you like
Because I already knew the name.
Vanessa.
