Chapter 10: The Truth Behind Nia’s Birth
I read Daniel’s message three times.
Then a fourth.
Each time, the words felt heavier.
*Do not believe Vanessa. She is not the only one who has been lying about Nia’s birth.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
But I had learned something over the past few days.
Tears did not always mean innocence.
Sometimes they only meant someone had been caught.
“What did he mean?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Marcus…”
“What did he mean?””
She stood.
“You need to understand the situation.””
“No.””
My voice stopped her.
“No more situations. No more explanations that start with you protecting yourself.””
She sat back down.
I held up my phone.
“Daniel says you’re not the only one who lied about Nia’s birth.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“That man has spent years trying to destroy us.””
“Is he wrong?””
Silence.
I hated how often silence had become an answer.
“Tell me the truth.””
She looked toward the stairs.
“Nia is upstairs.””
“I know.””
“She can’t hear this.””
I shook my head.
“She deserves to.””
Vanessa looked shocked.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I walked toward the stairs.
“Every adult in her life has made choices for her without letting her know what was happening.””
I stopped.
“That ends now.””
I called Nia downstairs.
She came slowly.
Ava followed.
Caleb stood behind them.
Nobody wanted to miss the truth anymore.
I sat with all three children.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“Start.””
She took a deep breath.
“When Nia was born, Daniel was not the only person involved.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who else?””
“My sister.””
“Olivia.””
She nodded.
“She helped me after Daniel left.””
I remembered the accident report.
The hidden documents.
The altered records.
“She knew everything?””
“Yes.””
“About me?””
“Yes.””
“About Nia?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Nia.
She was listening carefully.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“Because Olivia was the one who found out Daniel wasn’t telling the truth.””
Daniel.
Again.
I felt exhausted hearing his name.
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Daniel wasn’t actually Nia’s biological father.””
Nobody spoke.
The room went completely still.
Nia looked at me.
I saw fear in her eyes.
Not for herself.
For me.
I immediately reached for her hand.
“Keep going.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“The first DNA test showed Daniel was not the father.””
“Then who was?””
She looked at me.
I felt my heartbeat slow.
No.
I didn’t want to understand.
I didn’t want another impossible truth.
“Marcus…”
“Say it.””
Her voice broke.
“You were.””
Nobody moved.
Ava covered her mouth.
Caleb stared.
Nia looked at me.
Like she was afraid to breathe.
I couldn’t speak.
The world narrowed.
The walls.
The room.
The people around me.
Everything disappeared except one sentence.
You were.
“I don’t understand.””
Vanessa cried.
“I know.””
“You told me I adopted her.””
“I lied.””
“You told me she wasn’t mine.””
“I lied.””
“You made me spend years believing I had no biological connection to my daughter.””
“I was scared.””
The anger came back.
Not loud.
Not explosive.
Something colder.
“You keep using that word.””
She looked at me.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Fear explains a mistake.””
I pointed toward Nia.
“It does not explain years of cruelty.””
Nia squeezed my hand.
“Dad…”
I looked at her.
“I’m okay.””
She smiled sadly.
“You always say that.””
The words hurt.
Because they sounded exactly like me.
I turned back to Vanessa.
“Why?””
She looked broken.
“Because when I found out you were her father, I thought everything would change.””
“It should have.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“But Daniel came back.””
I frowned.
“What does he have to do with this?””
“Daniel knew the truth.””
“How?””
“Olivia told him.””
My mind raced.
“Why would Olivia tell him?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because Olivia hated me.””
The confession surprised me.
“Why?””
“She thought I ruined everything.””
“Everything?””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
“She believed Nia belonged with you.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“She thought I was stealing a family that wasn’t mine.””
I stared.
“And she was right?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That hurt more than words.
Later that night, after the children went to bed, I found the old hospital records Daniel had mentioned.
This time, I wasn’t looking for proof.
I was looking for myself.
The file was incomplete.
But one page remained.
A birth record.
Mother:
Vanessa Hart.
Father:
Marcus Reed.
I stared.
My name.
Not adoption.
Not guardianship.
Mine.
I sat there for a long time.
Then I heard footsteps.
Nia.
She stood in the doorway.
“Can I come in?””
I nodded.
She sat beside me.
“Is it true?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
She smiled.
But tears filled her eyes.
“I knew.””
“What?””
She shrugged.
“I always knew.””
I froze.
“How?””
She looked down.
“Because when I was little, you used to tell me I had your eyes.””
My throat tightened.
“I did?””
“Yes.””
She laughed softly.
“You said nobody else in the world had eyes like mine.””
I smiled through tears.
“I remember.””
A real memory.
Not a fragment.
A memory.
“You used to carry me everywhere.””
She looked at me.
“Then you forgot.””
I closed my eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Nia…”
“You came back.””
That sentence destroyed me.
Because after everything, she was still protecting me.
My daughter.
The child everyone tried to use as a secret.
The next morning, I received an email.
From a lawyer.
Attached was a document.
A lawsuit.
Filed years ago.
By Olivia.
Against Vanessa.
The reason?
*Custody fraud and falsification of parental records.*
At the bottom was a note.
One sentence.
*“Marcus Reed was listed as the biological father before the records were changed.””*

And below that:
*“Court hearing scheduled immediately.””*
