Chapter 7: The Name Beneath the Signature
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The name beneath the company logo stared back at me from the corner of the document.
A name I knew.
A name that belonged to someone I trusted.
Someone who had sat at my dinner table.
Someone who had hugged Emily.
Someone who had looked me in the eyes and told me to be careful with Rebecca.
Mark.
My brother.
The room tilted.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
My mind rejected it before my heart even had time to process it.
Mark had been the one warning me.
He had been the one who said Rebecca was dangerous.
He had been the one who stood beside me when the wedding collapsed.
He had been the one who told me to protect Emily.
“Daddy?””
Emily’s voice pulled me back.
I looked at Rebecca.
She was watching my face.
She knew.
She knew I had seen the name.
“You recognize it,” Rebecca said.
I didn’t answer.
Her smile grew slightly.
“Don’t you?””
I tightened my jaw.
“What did you do?””
Rebecca laughed softly.
“That’s what you ask?””
I took one step forward.
“What did you do?””
Her expression changed.
The confidence remained, but something darker appeared underneath.
“Your brother and I made an arrangement.””
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
She lifted the folder.
“Ask him yourself.””
I looked at Emily.
She was scared.
Terrified.
And I hated that every adult in her life kept making her feel unsafe.
I moved toward her.
“Come here, sweetheart.””
Rebecca didn’t stop me.
That worried me more.
I picked Emily up.
She immediately wrapped her arms around my neck.
“Daddy, I don’t like this place.””
“I know.””
“Can we go home?””
I looked at Rebecca.
“Yes.””
Rebecca stepped in front of the door.
“Not yet.””
I stared at her.
“You really think this ends well for you?””
She smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That I’m not the only person who wanted this.””
I froze.
The words landed harder than they should have.
Because a small part of me had already wondered.
How could Rebecca know so much?
How could she move so carefully?
How could she create plans involving my property, my daughter, and my future?
Someone had helped her.
Someone close.
“You and Mark?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Your brother knew exactly what I was doing.””
My grip tightened around Emily.
“No.””
“He was the one who introduced us.””
I felt the blood leave my face.
“What?””
Rebecca watched my reaction.
“Did you really think it was a coincidence that we met?””
I couldn’t speak.
The memories came rushing back.
The dinner.
The introduction.
Mark saying, “You two would actually get along.””
Rebecca laughing across the table.
The way she already knew things about me.
About my past.
About Emily.
I thought she had been interested.
I thought she had listened.
But maybe she had been collecting information.
“You’re lying,” I whispered.
Rebecca shrugged.
“Call him.””
I looked at my phone.
My hand hovered over it.
Emily whispered:
“Daddy?””
“I’m here.””
“Is Uncle Mark bad?””
The question broke me.
Because I didn’t know.
And that was the worst answer a father could have.
“I don’t know,” I whispered.
Rebecca smiled.
“There it is.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“The moment where you realize you don’t know who your enemies are.””
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Mark.
I stared at the screen.
Rebecca’s smile disappeared.
Only slightly.
But enough.
She hadn’t expected that.
I answered.
“Mark.””
Silence.
Then:
“Daniel.””
His voice sounded nervous.
Not confused.
Nervous.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
“Why?””
“Because I know.””
Silence.
Long.
Heavy.
Then Mark said:
“Who told you?””
My stomach turned.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
Just confirmation.
I closed my eyes.
“Was it you?””
“Daniel—”
“Was it you?””
Mark exhaled.
“I can explain.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone always said that after the damage was done.
“Explain what?””
“Everything.””
I looked at Rebecca.
She was watching me carefully.
“What did you do?””
Mark’s voice dropped.
“I tried to fix things.””
“Fix what?””
“Your life.””
My anger exploded.
“You destroyed my life.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“I saved you.””
Emily buried her face against my shoulder.
I stepped away from Rebecca.
“You helped her take my daughter.””
“I didn’t know she would do that.””
“You didn’t know?””
“I knew she wanted Emily away after the wedding.””
My entire body went cold.
“You knew?””
“I thought it was temporary.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You thought sending my daughter away was temporary?””
“Daniel, listen—”
“No.””
I looked at Rebecca.
Then back at the phone.
“You don’t get to explain.””
Mark was quiet.
Then he said something that made my anger disappear.
Not because it helped.
Because it revealed something worse.
“Daniel, Rebecca wasn’t supposed to marry you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was supposed to marry someone else.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Rebecca.
Her face changed.
“Who?””
Mark whispered:
“Me.””
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
Rebecca looked away.
May you like
And for the first time since I met her…
She looked ashamed.
