Chapter 12: The Truth Buried With My Father
I read the message three times.
Each time, it became harder to believe.
My father knew.
My mother lied.
The people I trusted most had been hiding pieces of my life.
And somehow, every secret led back to the same thing.
Control.
Money.
Emily.
I drove home without saying much.
Claire sat beside me.
Neither of us knew what to say.
When I arrived, my mother was waiting.
She knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
I placed the phone on the table.
I showed her the message.
The color drained from her face.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.””
She looked away.
“No.””
I froze.
“No?””
“I can’t.””
My anger exploded.
“You can’t?””
My voice echoed through the house.
“My daughter was targeted.””
“My brother betrayed me.””
“My fiancée tried to erase Emily from my life.””
“And now I find out my father knew something?””
My mother started crying.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone says that.””
I pointed upstairs.
“Everyone says they’re protecting me while they destroy everything.””
She covered her mouth.
And finally said:
“Your father was murdered.””
The room went silent.
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“He didn’t die in an accident.””
My mother sat down.
“He knew someone was trying to take control of the company.””
I stared at her.
“Who?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“You knew he was murdered?””
“I knew he was afraid.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because you were eighteen.””
Her voice broke.
“You had just lost your father.””
I looked away.
All these years.
I thought I had lost him.
I never knew he had been fighting.
“What did he leave?””
My mother stood slowly.
“He left a letter.””
My heart stopped.
“A letter?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She walked to a cabinet.
Opened a hidden drawer.
And removed a small box.
My hands shook as she placed it in front of me.
“I promised him I would only give this to you if you were in danger.””
I opened the box.
Inside was an envelope.
My name.
My father’s handwriting.
The handwriting I hadn’t seen in years.
I opened it.
The first line destroyed me.
Daniel, if you are reading this, someone has found a way to use your greatest weakness against you.
I continued.
Your kindness.
Your need to believe people can change.
Your desire to create a family.
My eyes burned.
The next sentence made my hands freeze.
The person closest to you will be the one who hurts you.
I looked at my mother.
She was crying.
I kept reading.
Do not trust anyone who enters your life too quickly.
Do not let anyone separate you from your daughter.
Emily is the key.
I stopped.
The key.
The same words.
The same phrase.
The same idea.
Someone had been following a plan created years ago.
A plan my father had predicted.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
If someone is trying to take Emily away from you, it means they are close to finding what I hid.
My heart raced.
“What did he hide?””
My mother shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at the letter again.
There was one final line.
Trust the person who carries your mother’s necklace.
I looked up.
“What necklace?””
My mother went pale.
“What?””
“The necklace.””
She touched her throat.
The necklace she always wore.
The one my father gave her.
“What about it?””
She removed it slowly.
For the first time, I noticed something strange.
The pendant was thicker than it should be.
I opened it.
Inside was a tiny compartment.
And inside that compartment was a small memory card.
My hands went cold.
My father had hidden something inside my mother’s necklace.
Something he trusted only her to protect.
I grabbed my laptop.
Inserted the card.
A video file appeared.
Created years ago.
Before my father died.
I clicked play.
The screen showed my father sitting in his office.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel.””
I froze.
Hearing his voice again nearly destroyed me.
“If you’re watching this, then I failed.””
My eyes filled.
“But if Emily is still with you, then I didn’t fail completely.””
He took a breath.
“There is someone in our family who has been planning this for years.””
The video glitched.
Then returned.
My father looked behind him.
Like he was afraid someone was listening.
And then he said the words that changed everything.
“Daniel, the person you need to fear is not the person trying to take your daughter.””
May you like
A pause.
“It’s the person who taught them how.””
