Chapter 11: The Father They Tried to Destroy

I took the file.

I didn’t ask permission.

I didn’t care.

Every page felt heavier than the last.

My name.

My daughter’s name.

My life.

Reduced to documents.

Observations.

Judgments.

A stranger’s opinion of whether I deserved to be a father.

I flipped through the pages.

Subject displays emotional attachment to child.

I stared.

That was considered evidence?

Another page.

Subject may struggle with separation due to unresolved grief.

Because I missed Emily’s mother?

Because I loved my daughter?

Another.

Child appears overly dependent on father.

My hands shook.

They weren’t documenting problems.

They were collecting normal moments and turning them into weapons.

“She didn’t write these,” I said.

Rebecca Lane looked away.

“No.””

“Who did?””

She didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Mark.””

“Yes.””

The word hurt more than I expected.

I closed the file.

“My brother wanted custody?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Rebecca Lane hesitated.

“He wanted access.””

“To what?””

She looked at me.

“Everything.””

The room felt smaller.

“The trust.””

“Yes.””

“The house.””

“Yes.””

“My company.””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

“So my daughter was just the obstacle.””

Rebecca Lane said nothing.

That silence confirmed it.

I stood.

“Where is Mark now?””

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

She looked exhausted.

“After the wedding failed, he stopped answering.””

“Because he knows I found out.””

“Yes.””

I walked toward the door.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“You need to understand something.””

I looked back.

“Rebecca wasn’t the mastermind.””

I waited.

“Mark wasn’t either.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Then who?””

She looked terrified.

And that scared me more than anything.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re telling me three people planned this and none of them were in charge?””

“I’m telling you there is someone who has been directing things.””

“Who?””

She whispered:

“Someone with power.””

That answer wasn’t enough.

But before I could push further, my phone rang.

Claire.

I answered.

“Claire?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Daniel, where are you?””

“Why?””

“Because someone broke into my apartment.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“They took everything.””

“Are you hurt?””

“No.””

A pause.

“But they left something.””

“What?””

Her voice lowered.

“They left a message.””

“What message?””

Claire took a breath.

Then said:

“Stop digging.””

I looked at Rebecca Lane.

She was watching me.

“You need to leave.””

I ignored her.

“Claire, where are you?””

“I’m at the police station.””

“I’m coming.””

The call ended.

I walked out.

But before I reached the door, Rebecca Lane spoke.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

“I’m sorry.””

I turned.

“For what?””

She looked at the file in my hand.

“For helping them hurt the only person I was supposed to protect.””

Claire was waiting outside the station.

She looked exhausted.

Her apartment had been destroyed.

Drawers emptied.

Files stolen.

Computers broken.

But one thing remained.

A single envelope placed on her kitchen table.

She handed it to me.

“I didn’t open it.””

I looked at the front.

My name.

Written by hand.

I opened it.

Inside was one photograph.

Emily.

Sleeping.

Taken inside our house.

My blood turned cold.

Behind it was a message.

You should have protected her better.

I looked at Claire.

“They were inside my house.””

She nodded.

“When?””

The fear on her face answered.

“Recently.””

I looked at the photo again.

The picture was taken from outside Emily’s bedroom door.

Someone had stood there.

Watching my daughter sleep.

My hands shook.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

A video.

I opened it.

The screen showed my living room.

Recorded from a hidden camera.

Then I saw myself.

A few days earlier.

Talking to Rebecca.

Arguing.

The moment she had been waiting for.

The moment she could use.

Then the camera angle changed.

And someone walked into view.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected.

My father’s old business partner.

A man who had attended my wedding.

A man who had hugged me and said:

“I’m proud of the man you became.””

The video ended.

A final message appeared.

Your father knew the truth.

I stared.

My father.

Dead for years.

Knowing the truth.

Impossible.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

Ask your mother why she lied about how your father died.
