Chapter 3: The Secret Someone Tried to Hide

I stared at the second note for almost a full minute.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

Emily was sitting beside me, coloring in the wedding program with a broken pencil she found on the floor.

She didn’t know that another piece of paper had just opened a door into something much darker.

“Daddy?””

I quickly folded the note.

“Yeah?””

“Are we still having cake?””

The question almost broke me.

Because seven-year-old girls were supposed to worry about cake.

They were supposed to worry about losing a tooth or choosing a favorite cartoon.

They weren’t supposed to wonder if the adults around them were planning their disappearance.

“Not today,” I said softly.

She looked disappointed.

Then she smiled anyway.

“It’s okay.””

That hurt more.

Because Emily had learned to accept disappointment too easily.

I waited until she was distracted before opening the note again.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

The message was short.

Daniel,

I tried to warn you before today, but Rebecca made sure I couldn’t reach you.

Do not let her convince you this was only about boarding school.

Ask her about the house.

Ask her about the documents.

Ask her why she needed Emily gone before the wedding.

I read it again.

The house.

The documents.

What documents?

I looked around the empty chapel.

The same place where I had planned to promise Rebecca forever.

Now it felt like a crime scene.

“Who wrote this?””

The voice behind me made me jump.

My brother Mark stood in the doorway.

I quickly folded the note.

“You saw?””

“I saw enough.””

He walked closer.

“Daniel, what happened?””

I looked at him.

For years, Mark had been the person who told me to slow down.

When I met Rebecca, he had said one thing.

“She’s great. But make sure she loves the whole package.””

The whole package.

Me.

And Emily.

“I think I made a mistake,” I said.

Mark looked toward Emily.

“What did she do?””

I handed him the first note.

He read it.

His expression changed.

“She wrote this?””

“Yes.””

Mark shook his head slowly.

“No.””

“What?””

“No, that’s not all.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Two weeks ago, I saw Rebecca talking to a realtor.””

“A realtor?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

My mind raced.

The house.

The documents.

The conversation I had ignored.

Three months earlier, Rebecca had started asking strange questions.

About my will.

About my life insurance.

About what would happen if something happened to me.

At the time, I thought she was being responsible.

Planning our future.

Now every memory looked different.

“Where is she?”” I asked.

“Who?””

“Rebecca.””

Mark hesitated.

“She left about twenty minutes ago.””

“She left?””

“She told everyone you needed space.””

I laughed quietly.

Of course she did.

She was already controlling the story.

Making herself the victim.

I stood up.

“I need to find out what she was planning.””

Mark grabbed my shoulder.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“Be careful.””

The warning felt heavier than it should have.

That evening, I drove home with Emily asleep in the back seat.

The wedding decorations were still everywhere.

The flowers.

The ribbons.

The boxes of unused favors.

A house prepared for a marriage that no longer existed.

When I opened the front door, something felt wrong.

Not messy.

Not broken.

Different.

Like someone had been searching.

Emily woke up.

“Are we home?””

“Yes, sweetheart.””

She smiled.

“Good.””

I carried her upstairs.

After she changed into pajamas, she looked at me.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Will you still be my family?””

My heart shattered.

I sat beside her.

“Emily, you are my family.””

“Even if Rebecca leaves?””

I brushed her hair away from her face.

“Especially then.””

She finally closed her eyes.

I waited until she fell asleep.

Then I went downstairs.

I opened my laptop.

I searched through every email.

Every document.

Every message.

And then I found something.

A folder I had never created.

A folder hidden deep inside my account.

The name was simple.

“Future Plans.””

My hands went cold.

I clicked it.

Inside were files.

Property documents.

Financial records.

And one document with Rebecca’s name on it.

I opened it.

The first page was a legal agreement.

A marriage agreement.

But the second page made my stomach drop.

Because it wasn’t about protecting our future.

It was about removing Emily from it.

And at the bottom of the page was a signature.

Not Rebecca’s.

Mine.

Except I had never signed it.

I stared at the signature.

The same handwriting.

The same shape.

The same name.

Someone had copied my signature.

And then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman whispered:

“Daniel, you finally found the documents.””

My blood froze.

“Who is this?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“I’m the person who tried to stop Rebecca.””

A pause.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your daughter’s life was never the only thing she planned to take from you.””
