Chapter 8: The Secret Sarah Buried for Ten Years

Richard’s question stayed in the room.

“Why was Adrian listed on Noah’s birth record?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

And that silence was louder than any confession.

Richard stared at her.

The woman he had trusted.

The woman who had stood beside him for twelve years.

The woman who had just watched him discover every secret about his past.

Now she had one of her own.

“Sarah?””

Her lips trembled.

“I can explain.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Because he had heard those words before.

From Vanessa.

And suddenly, he hated how familiar they sounded.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“Not explain.””

He shook his head.

“Tell me the truth.””

Sarah looked down.

Dr. Miles slowly stepped away.

“This is a family matter.””

But nobody moved.

Because everyone knew it wasn’t just family anymore.

Too many people had been hurt by the secrets.

Sarah sat down.

Her hands were shaking.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

Richard looked at her.

“Find out what?””

She closed her eyes.

“The truth about Noah.””

Richard’s heart tightened.

“What truth?””

Sarah took a breath.

“One that I buried because I thought it would protect him.””

Richard looked toward his son’s hospital bed.

Noah was still asleep.

Still innocent.

Still unaware that adults had spent years making decisions about his life without him.

“Protect him from what?””

Sarah looked at Richard.

“From losing you.””

The words confused him.

“Losing me?””

She nodded.

“Before Noah was born, we were struggling.””

Richard frowned.

“What does that have to do with Adrian?””

Sarah swallowed.

“Everything.””

She looked at the floor.

“When I was pregnant, there were complications.””

Richard remembered.

The fear.

The hospital visits.

The doctors warning them about risks.

He remembered holding Sarah’s hand.

Promising they would get through anything.

But there was something she had never told him.

“The doctors were worried about the pregnancy,” she said.

Richard nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

“But there was something else.””

Her voice became smaller.

“They thought Noah might not survive.””

Richard froze.

Sarah continued.

“I was terrified.””

She wiped her eyes.

“And then I met Adrian.””

The room became silent.

Richard’s face changed.

“He was your doctor?””

Sarah nodded.

“He was part of the medical team.””

Richard stared at her.

“And the record?””

Sarah looked away.

“Adrian helped.””

“With what?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Treatment.””

Richard felt confused.

“Treatment?””

Sarah nodded.

“There was a procedure. A clinical trial. Something experimental.””

Dr. Miles looked surprised.

“Adrian was involved?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Yes.””

She turned back to Richard.

“He saved Noah’s life.””

Richard looked at his son.

The anger inside him became mixed with something else.

Confusion.

Pain.

Questions.

“But why is he listed as the father?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Because of the paperwork.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“It’s not.””

She looked at him.

“Because there was a mistake.””

Richard waited.

“A mistake?””

Sarah nodded.

“When Noah was born, the hospital system had an error.””

Richard stared.

“And you never corrected it?””

Sarah looked ashamed.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“After you left for work.””

Richard’s face changed.

“I never left.””

Sarah flinched.

The sentence hung there.

“You left emotionally.””

Richard went quiet.

Because that hurt.

Because part of him knew it was true.

Sarah continued.

“We were fighting constantly. You were angry. I was scared. We were both exhausted.””

She looked at Noah.

“And then the hospital called.””

Richard frowned.

“What did they say?””

Sarah’s voice dropped.

“They said there was a problem with the birth records.””

Richard leaned forward.

“And?””

“They needed another signature.””

“Whose?””

Sarah looked toward the door.

“Adrian’s.””

The room went silent.

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because he had authorized the emergency procedure.””

Richard stared.

“So he was listed because of a medical error?””

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Because by the time I understood what happened…”

She stopped.

Richard’s voice became softer.

“What?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because by then, I had another problem.””

Richard waited.

“What problem?””

She looked toward Noah.

“He had started calling Adrian dad.””

Richard froze.

Sarah continued.

“Not because I told him to.””

Her voice broke.

“Because Adrian was there.””

Richard felt the words hit him.

The same words Vanessa had said.

He was there.

Adrian was there.

Again.

Sarah covered her face.

“After Noah was born, you were working constantly. You were trying to pay hospital bills. You were trying to fix everything.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“I was.””

“But you were never home.””

The accusation hurt.

But he couldn’t deny it.

“And Adrian was.””

Richard looked at her.

“Was there something between you?””

Sarah immediately shook her head.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“Never.””

Richard searched her face.

“I swear.””

A long silence.

Then she continued.

“Adrian was Noah’s doctor. Nothing more.””

Richard looked at the record.

“Then why did he send me that video?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know.

Or because she did.

Before anyone could speak, Noah moved.

His eyes opened.

“Mom?””

Everyone turned.

Sarah immediately went to him.

“I’m here.””

Noah looked around.

“Why is everyone sad?””

Nobody answered.

Then his eyes found Richard.

“Dad?””

Richard stepped closer.

“Yes?””

Noah looked at him.

“Are you leaving?””

The question destroyed him.

Again.

“No.””

Richard sat beside him.

“I’m not leaving.””

Noah looked uncertain.

“Even if I’m not your only kid?””

Richard’s face broke.

“Oh, Noah.””

He touched his son’s cheek.

“You could never be replaced.””

“But Lily…”

Richard shook his head.

“Lily matters.””

He took a breath.

“And so do you.””

Noah looked at him.

“Promise?””

Richard nodded.

“This time, I’ll prove it.””

For the first time, Noah leaned into him.

Richard held him.

But across the room, Sarah’s phone started ringing.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

Richard noticed.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

“Sarah?””

Slowly, she turned the phone around.

The caller name was visible.

Adrian Cole.

Richard stood.

“Why is he calling you?””

Sarah looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, she answered.

“Hello?””

Everyone listened.

Adrian’s voice came through.

“Sarah.””

Her face went pale.

“Adrian?””

“I know Richard found out.””

She looked at Richard.

“How?””

Adrian ignored the question.

“You need to tell him the rest.””

Sarah’s hand tightened around the phone.

“There is no rest.””

Adrian became quiet.

Then:

“Yes, there is.””

Richard stepped closer.

“What is he talking about?””

Sarah looked away.

Adrian continued.

“Richard needs to know what happened the night Noah was born.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Adrian, don’t.””

Richard froze.

The fear in her voice told him everything.

“What happened that night?””

No answer.

Then Adrian spoke.

“Sarah didn’t tell you because she thought she was protecting Noah.””

Richard looked at Sarah.

“But the truth is…”

A pause.

“The hospital switched two newborn records.””

Nobody moved.

Richard felt cold.

“What?””

Adrian continued.

“And Noah’s original record wasn’t the one you think.””

Sarah whispered:

“Please stop.””

Adrian ignored her.

“Richard…”

His voice became serious.

“You have spent ten years believing Noah was your son.””

Richard looked at his child.

His world slowed.

Then Adrian said the words that shattered everything.

“But Noah’s real biological father…”

A pause.

“…is someone you know very well.””

The call ended.

Richard stood frozen.

Sarah was crying.
