Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew Richard’s Secret

Richard kept staring at the phone long after the call ended.

The screen went dark.

But the voice remained.

You should have thought about your daughter before you destroyed her life.

Those words stayed inside his head.

Not because they were completely true.

Not because they were completely false.

But because they came from someone who knew the part of his life he had buried.

Sarah watched him carefully.

“Who was that?””

Richard didn’t answer.

“Richard.””

He finally looked up.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa let out a quiet laugh.

Nobody expected it.

Richard turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked almost amused.

“You really don’t know?””

His face tightened.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked at the phone in his hand.

“That was Daniel.””

The name changed everything.

Richard went still.

Sarah noticed.

“You know him.””

Richard’s silence confirmed it.

“Who is Daniel?””

Richard looked away.

And Sarah’s heart sank.

Because once again, she was watching her husband remember a life she had never been allowed to see.

“He was Vanessa’s brother.””

Vanessa nodded.

“And Lily’s uncle.””

Richard swallowed.

“Daniel was always angry with me.””

Sarah crossed her arms.

“Can you blame him?””

Richard looked at her.

The question hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

“No.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“He hated that I still waited for you.””

Richard looked at her.

“I didn’t know you were waiting.””

Her expression changed.

“You never tried to know.””

The hallway became quiet.

Sarah looked between them.

“Why did Daniel call now?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the hospital room where Noah was sleeping.

“Because he knows I came here.””

Richard frowned.

“He knew about this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he stop you?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because he wanted revenge too.””

The word felt heavy.

Revenge.

Not an accident.

Not confusion.

Not a misunderstanding.

A plan.

Dr. Miles returned from the security office carrying a small evidence envelope.

“I found something.””

Everyone turned.

He looked at Richard.

“The memory card.””

Richard immediately remembered.

The thing Vanessa was holding in the footage.

“What was on it?””

Dr. Miles didn’t answer immediately.

He looked uncomfortable.

“It’s complicated.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Show us.””

Dr. Miles hesitated.

Then nodded.

They moved into a private consultation room.

The lights were dim.

The blinds were closed.

Dr. Miles placed the memory card into the computer.

A folder appeared.

Only one file.

A video.

Richard’s chest tightened.

“Play it.””

The video began.

At first, it was dark.

Then a familiar voice filled the room.

Richard.

His own voice.

But younger.

Angrier.

He looked at the screen.

And his face changed.

The video showed an argument from years ago.

An argument he thought nobody recorded.

Vanessa stood in the old apartment.

She was crying.

“You’re really leaving?””

Young Richard looked away.

“I have to.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re choosing to.””

The video continued.

“You think starting over will erase this?””

Richard’s younger self said nothing.

Then Vanessa spoke words that made Sarah look at him.

“Lily is your daughter.””

The room froze.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Sarah slowly turned.

“That’s it?””

Dr. Miles nodded.

“There are more files.””

He opened another.

Another video.

Then another.

Documents.

Messages.

Medical records.

Richard stared.

“What is all this?””

Dr. Miles looked serious.

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

Dr. Miles looked at Sarah.

Then Richard.

“That Vanessa wasn’t only trying to expose you.””

Richard frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Dr. Miles clicked another file.

A hospital record appeared.

Not Saint Mary’s.

A different hospital.

A different city.

The patient name was Lily Cole.

Richard leaned closer.

The date was ten years earlier.

The day Lily was born.

Below it was a note.

A note from a doctor.

Richard read it.

Then his face turned pale.

“No.””

Sarah looked at him.

“What?””

Richard couldn’t speak.

Dr. Miles answered.

“The record says Lily had a serious medical condition as a newborn.””

Richard looked up.

His voice cracked.

“She was sick?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

Sarah looked at her.

“And you never told him?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You disappeared.””

Richard stepped closer.

“I would have helped.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You think money fixes everything?””

“No.””

“Then what would you have done?””

Richard stopped.

Because he didn’t know.

And Vanessa saw it.

“You don’t know.””

Her voice softened.

“You weren’t there.””

Sarah watched the pain between them.

This was no longer just about revenge.

There was grief.

Years of it.

Vanessa continued.

“Lily spent weeks in that hospital.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I didn’t know.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You didn’t.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“And I hated you for that.””

The room went silent.

Then Sarah noticed something.

Something in the records.

A name.

She leaned closer.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

“This doctor…”

She pointed at the screen.

“Dr. Adrian Cole.””

Vanessa froze.

Richard noticed.

“What?””

Sarah looked at Vanessa.

“Who is Adrian Cole?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And that was the first time Sarah saw genuine fear on her face.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Fear.

“Vanessa?””

Dr. Miles searched the name.

His expression changed.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

He turned the monitor.

“Dr. Adrian Cole was the physician who treated Lily.””

Richard stared.

“Okay.””

Dr. Miles continued.

“But he was also the person who signed the request for access to Noah’s medical records.””

The room went cold.

Richard slowly looked at Vanessa.

“Your doctor?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Sarah’s voice was quiet.

“You knew him.””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

“How?””

A long pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Because Adrian is Lily’s father.””

Nobody moved.

Richard stared.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You heard me.””

Sarah’s confusion deepened.

“Wait.””

She looked at Richard.

“You said Lily was your daughter.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She is.””

Then she looked at Richard.

“But Adrian raised her.””

Richard felt like the ground disappeared beneath him.

“He’s not her father.””

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“Biologically?””

“No.””

“But he was there.””

The words hurt.

Because Richard knew what they meant.

Adrian had been there for the moments Richard missed.

The first steps.

The first words.

The first fever.

The first day of school.

Everything.

Richard had a biological connection.

But Adrian had a lifetime of memories.

Then the door suddenly opened.

Nurse Ava rushed in.

“Dr. Miles.””

Everyone turned.

“What happened?””

She looked at Richard.

“Your son.””

Richard immediately stood.

“What about Noah?””

“He woke up.””

Sarah moved toward the door.

“Is he okay?””

Nurse Ava hesitated.

That hesitation terrified them.

“He’s asking for Vanessa.””

Richard stopped.

“What?””

Sarah looked confused.

“Why?””

Nurse Ava looked down.

“Because before Vanessa left…”

She swallowed.

“She told Noah something.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What did she tell him?””

Nurse Ava looked at him.

“She told him the truth about his family.””

Sarah’s heart dropped.

“What truth?””

The nurse answered quietly.

“She told Noah that his father had another child.””

Richard froze.

Because now Vanessa had reached the one person she should never have involved.

His son.

And when they entered Noah’s room, they found him sitting up in bed.

Holding a drawing.

A drawing of a family.

But this time…

There were five people in it.

Noah looked at his father.

“Dad?””

Richard stepped closer.

Noah held up the picture.

“Is this why you don’t love me?””

Richard stopped breathing.

Because Vanessa hadn’t just exposed his past.

She had planted her pain inside his son.

May you like

And Noah was now asking the question Richard feared most.

“Was I not enough?””
