Chapter 6: The Question That Broke Richard

“Was I not enough?””

Noah’s voice was barely audible.

But to Richard, it was louder than anything he had heard all night.

The machines.

The footsteps in the hallway.

The distant voices of doctors and nurses.

Everything disappeared.

There was only his son sitting in that hospital bed, holding a drawing that was supposed to be innocent.

A family.

A father.

A mother.

Children.

But now Noah saw it differently.

He saw a reason to doubt his place.

Richard slowly walked closer.

“Noah…”

His son looked away.

“Vanessa said you had another kid.””

Sarah immediately looked at Richard.

But this time, she didn’t speak.

She let him answer.

Because this was his moment.

His responsibility.

Richard sat beside Noah’s bed.

“Yes.””

Noah’s fingers tightened around the paper.

“So you did.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

A tear rolled down Noah’s cheek.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Richard opened his mouth.

But no excuse felt big enough.

No explanation could erase ten years of silence.

“I was scared.””

Noah looked at him.

“You were scared of me?””

“No.””

Richard shook his head quickly.

“Never.””

“Then why?””

Richard looked down.

“Because I made mistakes before you were born.””

Noah listened.

“I thought if I left the past alone, it would stop hurting people.””

Noah wiped his eyes.

“But it hurt me.””

That sentence broke Richard.

Because it was true.

Sarah stood near the window, watching.

She wanted to be angry.

She was angry.

But she also saw something she had never seen before.

Richard finally understood the damage caused by his silence.

Not because someone accused him.

Not because Vanessa exposed him.

Because his own child was hurting.

Richard touched Noah’s hand.

“You were never not enough.””

Noah looked at him.

“You promise?””

Richard nodded.

“I promise.””

“You promise like you promised to stay?””

The words cut deeper.

Richard froze.

Because Noah remembered.

The night he walked away.

The night his son begged him not to leave.

Sarah looked down.

Even she felt the weight of it.

Richard swallowed.

“You’re right.””

Noah looked surprised.

Richard continued.

“I broke that promise.””

The room became silent.

“But I’m here now.””

Noah stared at him.

“Because Vanessa got caught?””

Richard closed his eyes.

The question was painful because it was fair.

“No.””

He looked directly at his son.

“Because I should have been here before.””

Noah studied his father’s face.

Children could sense fake apologies.

But Richard wasn’t performing.

For the first time, he wasn’t trying to defend himself.

He was admitting he was wrong.

Slowly, Noah reached out.

Richard held his hand.

And for a moment, they just sat there.

Broken.

But together.

Outside the room, Sarah stood with Dr. Miles.

“She knew exactly what she was doing.””

Dr. Miles nodded.

“Vanessa understood emotional pressure.””

“She used Noah to hurt Richard.””

“Yes.””

Sarah looked through the glass.

“But why stop there?””

Dr. Miles looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“She could have exposed Richard’s secret and left.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“But she stayed.””

Dr. Miles nodded slowly.

“You think she wanted something else.””

Sarah looked toward the hallway.

“I think we still don’t know the whole story.””

She was right.

Because across town, Vanessa sat in a quiet restaurant.

Across from her was Daniel.

Her brother.

The man who had warned Richard.

He looked angry.

“You went too far.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Did I?””

“You put a child in the middle of this.””

Her expression hardened.

“You think I don’t know that?””

“Then why did you do it?””

Vanessa looked away.

Because the answer was complicated.

She wanted Richard to hurt.

She wanted him to understand what it felt like to lose someone.

But seeing Noah cry had been different.

She hadn’t expected that.

She hadn’t expected to see a child carrying the weight of an adult’s mistakes.

Daniel leaned forward.

“You’re starting to regret it.””

“No.””

“You are.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Don’t pretend you know me.””

Daniel sighed.

“I know you better than anyone.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel placed a folder on the table.

Vanessa looked at it.

“What is that?””

“The reason you need to stop.””

She opened it.

Her face changed.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Court papers.

And one name.

Richard’s.

“What did you do?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Then where did you get this?””

“From Adrian.””

Vanessa looked up.

“Why?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“Because Adrian knows what really happened ten years ago.””

Vanessa closed the folder.

“I know what happened.””

“No.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“You know the story you were told.””

The words unsettled her.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Did Richard really abandon Lily?””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Of course he did.””

“Are you sure?””

The question stayed between them.

Because deep down, Vanessa had avoided asking it.

She remembered the night Richard left.

She remembered the anger.

The pain.

But she didn’t remember everything.

There were missing pieces.

Daniel pushed the folder toward her.

“Look at page seven.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then opened it.

Her eyes moved across the document.

And slowly…

Her face lost all color.

“No.””

Daniel watched her reaction.

“You didn’t know.””

She looked up.

“What is this?””

“The truth.””

Vanessa’s hands shook.

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s not.””

She read the page again.

Then whispered:

“He tried to contact me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Multiple times.””

Vanessa stopped breathing.

“No.””

“He sent messages.””

“No.””

“He asked to see Lily.””

Vanessa pushed the folder away.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“You blocked him.””

Vanessa stared at him.

The memories came back.

The anger.

The heartbreak.

The night she deleted messages without reading them.

The calls she refused.

Because she believed he had abandoned her.

She believed he didn’t care.

But what if…

What if she had been wrong?

Her entire revenge was built on one belief.

And that belief was beginning to crack.

Back at the hospital, Richard sat beside Noah until his son fell asleep.

Sarah entered quietly.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she sat in the chair across from him.

“She showed me the photo.””

Richard looked up.

“I know.””

“And the videos.””

He nodded.

Sarah looked tired.

“I don’t know who you were before me.””

Richard looked down.

“But I know who you are now.””

He looked at her.

The sentence gave him hope.

Until she continued.

“And I don’t know if I can trust you.””

Richard accepted that.

“I understand.””

She looked surprised.

“No argument?””

“No.””

He glanced at Noah.

“I spent years avoiding difficult conversations.””

A pause.

“I’m not doing that anymore.””

Sarah looked at him.

“Then start with the truth.””

Richard nodded.

“Okay.””

“Everything.””

Another nod.

“No more secrets.””

Before he could continue, Dr. Miles appeared at the door.

“Richard.””

They both turned.

The doctor looked serious.

“We found something else.””

Richard stood.

“What?””

Dr. Miles held a phone.

“It came from Vanessa’s old account.””

Sarah frowned.

“Another message?””

Dr. Miles nodded.

“But this one wasn’t written to you.””

He looked at Richard.

“It was written to Adrian.””

Richard took the phone.

The message was short.

Only one sentence.

But it changed everything.

*“He knows about Lily now. We need to tell him why she was never really his daughter.””*

Richard stared.

Sarah looked over his shoulder.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Because the message created a terrifying possibility.

Lily was not just a secret.

She was a mystery.

And someone had spent ten years making sure Richard never discovered the truth.

Then Richard’s phone buzzed.

A new message arrived.

From an unknown number.

There was a picture attached.

Richard opened it.

And his hands began to shake.

Because the picture showed Lily.

Standing beside Adrian.

Holding a DNA test report.

May you like

And underneath it was one sentence:

*“Ask Vanessa who Lily’s real father is.””*
