Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in the DNA Report

Richard stared at the photograph on his phone.

He couldn’t move.

He couldn’t breathe.

The picture was simple.

A little girl standing beside Adrian.

A white envelope in her hands.

A DNA report partially visible beneath her fingers.

And those words.

Ask Vanessa who Lily’s real father is.

His hands began to shake.

Sarah noticed immediately.

“What happened?””

Richard didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“Richard.””

He slowly turned the phone toward her.

Sarah looked at the image.

Her expression changed.

“What is that?””

“I don’t know.””

But he did know one thing.

Someone wanted him to question everything.

His past.

His choices.

His daughter.

His entire life.

Dr. Miles looked between them.

“Who sent it?””

Richard looked at the unknown number.

“No idea.””

Sarah stared at the picture again.

“Call it.””

Richard pressed the number.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a voice answered.

A woman’s voice.

Young.

Shaking.

“Hello?””

Richard froze.

Because he knew that voice.

Not because he had heard it before.

Because he had spent years imagining it.

“Lily?””

Silence.

Then a small breath.

“Yes.””

Richard sat down.

His knees suddenly felt weak.

“I’m…”

He stopped.

How could he introduce himself?

I’m your father.

After ten years of absence, those words felt impossible.

“I’m Richard.””

Another silence.

“I know.””

His heart broke.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Lily’s voice became quieter.

“Mom told me.””

Richard looked at Vanessa’s empty chair.

“Lily…”

He didn’t know what to say.

A child should never have to hear their parent struggle for words.

Especially not because that parent was the reason they were needed.

“I have questions,” Lily said.

Richard closed his eyes.

“Okay.””

“Did you leave because you didn’t want me?””

The question nearly destroyed him.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“No, Lily.””

His voice cracked.

“I need you to know that.””

“Then why?””

Richard looked at Sarah.

Then at Noah sleeping peacefully.

Because the truth had finally caught up with him.

“Because I was a coward.””

Sarah looked at him.

Richard continued.

“I was young. I was scared. I made choices I regret.””

Lily was quiet.

Then:

“Did you try to find me?””

Richard swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Mom said you didn’t.””

Richard looked down.

“I did.””

The silence afterward was different.

Not angry.

Confused.

“Then why didn’t I know?””

Richard had no answer.

And that was the worst part.

Because there was a possibility that someone else had taken those choices away from both of them.

“Lily, where are you?””

A pause.

“With Adrian.””

Richard’s face tightened.

“Adrian?””

“Yes.””

The name felt like a warning.

“Why?””

Another pause.

“Because he found something.””

Richard looked at Sarah.

“What?””

Lily hesitated.

Then whispered:

“The DNA test.””

Richard’s heart stopped.

“What did it say?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“Adrian has it.””

Richard stood.

“Lily, listen to me.””

“What?””

“Can you send me a copy?””

Silence.

Then:

“I already did.””

Richard looked at his phone.

Another message appeared.

A file attachment.

His fingers hovered over it.

Then he opened it.

The document loaded.

And within seconds, his entire world shifted.

Sarah watched his face.

“What does it say?””

Richard didn’t answer.

She took the phone.

Her eyes moved across the report.

Then widened.

“No…”

Dr. Miles looked concerned.

“What?””

Sarah slowly lowered the phone.

“The DNA test…”

She looked at Richard.

“It says Richard is not Lily’s biological father.””

The room went silent.

Richard sat down.

The words didn’t hurt the way he expected.

They created something worse.

Confusion.

Because for years, he had carried guilt for abandoning his daughter.

Now someone was telling him she wasn’t his daughter at all.

But that didn’t erase anything.

Not the love he felt.

Not the years he missed.

Not the child who believed he didn’t want her.

“Who is her father?”” Sarah asked.

Richard looked at the phone.

The report had a second name.

A name he recognized.

Adrian Cole.

Dr. Miles stepped closer.

“Adrian?””

Richard nodded slowly.

Sarah looked stunned.

“Adrian raised her because he was her father.””

Richard said nothing.

Because suddenly, every piece of the puzzle moved.

Adrian’s access to Noah’s records.

Vanessa’s anger.

The hidden messages.

The revenge.

But something still didn’t make sense.

If Adrian was Lily’s father…

Why had Vanessa spent years blaming Richard?

Why had she made him believe he abandoned a child that wasn’t biologically his?

The answer came sooner than expected.

The hospital doors opened.

Vanessa walked in.

She stopped when she saw everyone looking at her.

Especially Richard.

He held up the phone.

“Did you know?””

Her face changed.

A small flicker of fear.

“Know what?””

Richard stepped closer.

“That Lily isn’t my daughter.””

Vanessa froze.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

And that silence told him everything.

“You knew.””

Vanessa looked away.

Sarah stared at her.

“You knew the whole time?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Richard felt betrayed in a way he couldn’t explain.

“Then why?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because you were still her father.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“But I wasn’t.””

“You were.””

She stepped closer.

“Blood doesn’t erase ten years of love.””

Richard shook his head.

“You kept me away from her.””

“I thought I was protecting her.””

“From me?””

“From everyone.””

Her voice broke.

“She was sick. She was scared. Adrian was there. My family was there.””

She looked at him.

“And you were gone.””

Richard’s anger faded slightly.

Because underneath her cruelty was a pain he finally understood.

But understanding wasn’t forgiveness.

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

She admitted it.

No excuses.

“I did.””

Sarah looked surprised.

Vanessa continued.

“I wanted you to feel what I felt.””

Richard stared at her.

“When?””

She looked down.

“The first time I saw Noah.””

Everyone became silent.

“When I saw you holding him…”

Her voice cracked.

“I saw the father Lily never had.””

Richard looked at Noah.

The guilt returned.

“I was wrong.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

She wiped her tears.

“You were.””

A long pause.

Then Sarah spoke.

“But why hurt Noah?””

Vanessa looked at her.

And for the first time, she looked ashamed.

“I didn’t plan that.””

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“You brought him into this.””

“I know.””

“You made him think his father didn’t love him.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I know.””

The room fell silent.

Then Richard’s phone buzzed again.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

This time from Adrian.

Richard opened it.

Only one sentence.

*“You know the truth about Lily. Now you need to know the truth about Noah.””*

Richard frowned.

“What?””

A video attachment appeared.

Sarah felt fear rise in her chest.

“No.””

Richard pressed play.

The video showed Adrian sitting in a dark room.

His face was serious.

“Richard.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, Vanessa finally told you about Lily.””

A pause.

“But Lily isn’t the only child whose life was changed by a lie.””

Richard’s breathing stopped.

Adrian continued.

“Ten years ago, you believed you lost a daughter.””

The screen went black for a moment.

Then another image appeared.

A hospital record.

A newborn baby.

A mother’s name.

A father’s name.

Richard leaned closer.

And his entire face changed.

Because the record showed something impossible.

Something that connected his forgotten past to his present.

A name he had never expected to see.

Noah’s name.

And underneath it…

A second father listed on the original birth documents.

Adrian’s voice continued.

“You need to ask Sarah one question.””

The video ended.

Richard slowly turned toward his wife.

Sarah was already crying.

Because she knew exactly what question he was about to ask.

And she knew the answer would destroy everything.

“Sarah…”

May you like

His voice trembled.

“Why was Adrian listed on Noah’s birth record?””
